Live with an Australian family Well developed pastoral care support services International students studying in Australian government schools receive a very high level of care. Each school provides a dedicated international co-ordinator and other specialised staff or fully trained staff who monitor student attendance, progress, health and wellbeing. Typically, Australian government schools provide on-arrival reception and orientation programs and health and counselling services. There is a wide range of welfare and academic support available in all Australian state schools. This includes intensive English language support. The Australian Government plays a proactive role in ensuring that international students who come to Australia for their studies have legal protection. The Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) is unique to Australia and ensures that students get the quality course for which they have paid besides providing many other assurances to the international student and their family. All Australian government schools operate a successful Homestay Program where international students live with local families and experience everyday Australian family life. Homestay is the best way for students to improve their English, gain confidence, and interact in a safe and nurturing environment. Homestay Programs that are operated or approved by Australian education providers will typically have: A screening process involving a home inspection, interview and a police background check for providers of homestay accommodation An orientation program for new homestay hosts Ongoing monitoring of homestay placements A requirement for homestay hosts to understand the school s child protection policies and legislative requirements An agreement or contract for accommodation services provided A Code of Conduct for homestay hosts and for students A Homestay Communications Policy, or processes for solving any accommodation problems An international education beginning in an Australia government school sets students apart from their peers and provides multiple pathways to success.

Testimonials Rongkai TIAN In December 2012, the achievement of the highest Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) in the Australia Capital Territory was awarded to Rongkai, an international Chinese student who completed his year 12 Certificate at a government school. Rongkai originates from Hohehot, Inner Mongolia, China and had experienced Australian culture when his parents toured the country in January 2008. His one-off tour of Australia would be the beginning of a long and highly successful academic career starting with his study in a government school in July 2010, and continuing with a scholarship to university in March 2013. Rongkai s parents decision to send him to Australia to undertake a study program finishing with the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), has provided Rongkai with the skills, the competencies and the language proficiency to compete not only with his fellow international students, but also with his Australian peers both in terms of the university entrance options available to him and his future career opportunities. The achievement of an Ju Lie KIM Arriving in Hobart in 2011, Ju Lie studied Year 11 and 12 at Hobart College. During this time, she achieved great academic success. Studying a diverse range of subjects, including English as a Second Language, Maths Applied, Maths Methods, Japanese, Accounting, English Communications, and Korean, Ju Lie was the recipient of an academic award for her results in Maths Applied, and achieved a perfect score in Japanese. The best part of studying in Tasmania, however, was the great support from her teachers. The support and warm attitude of the teachers gave me a lot of positive energy, she says. During her time studying in Tasmania, Ju Lie developed a strong interest in Accounting. She credits her time in Tasmania as helping her to identify this interest, and plans to continue studying in this field at university. ATAR of 99.95 is testimony to Rongkai s industrious nature, his determination and his dedication to making the most of every opportunity afforded him.

The staff and teachers at NSW schools have not only expanded my horizons of the world, of what I can do and who I can be but they have also become my family who ve greatly supported me, who ve greatly contributed towards my personal growth and development. Katlyn commented that, Strathmore Secondary College had a vibrant and supportive learning environment, in which the study facilities are readily available, and the teacher-student relationship is strong and genuine. Katyln achieved an ATAR score of 98.55. Thuy became an outstanding young leader at her school, completed senior high school and the Higher School Certificate (HSC) in 2011 and was dux of her school. She was first in the State in English as a Second Language (ESL) and in Vietnamese. Katlyn stated that, the school had more to give than just academic advantages; it nurtured me, gave me a voice and helped me become a leader with lots of relevant life skills. She achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 99.95 and was listed on the NSW Board of Studies Top All Rounder list for her distinguished HSC achievements. Katlyn became a member of the Student Representative Council, allowing her to suggest solutions to benefit the student body. The following year Katlyn was elected as the International Student Captain, proving to be an articulate advocate for the International student body. Thuy is currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies). She is currently enrolled in a 3-year Bachelor of Nursing degree.

Yutao Studying abroad was always my dream when I was a little child, because I wanted to experience different cultures in the world. At the age of 16, I was so fortunate to come to South Australia to do my high school with the support of my parents. When I first came to Australia, the friendly and passionate IES [International Education Services] teachers and homestay family made me feel like coming home. The teachers are patient and professional. They helped me change my mind about learning and life. Study in Australia is completely different from the study in China. I can choose the subjects according to my own hobby. I think this is the most important fact that leads me to a high achievement. Xiao CHEN I successfully applied for university upon my graduation from Education Queensland International with the help from my course and career advisor in school. Because of the excellent program run by EQI, I found that I was able to pass through the transition phase from high school to university faster than other students my age. EQI s program prepared me well for life outside of high school in terms of both knowledge and cultural experience. Xiao was the recipient of one of the Queensland Education and Training International Awards for Excellence and Queensland-China Education and Training Awards for Excellence in 2010. He was grateful to find his EQI school gave him access to a local community in which he could get involved and be part of what was a big family. Winson said I enjoyed the time making new friends with local students in school and my homestay family gave me great help and support for my study and everyday living.
