Training module 2 Installing VMware View In this second module we ll install VMware View for an End User Computing environment. We ll install all necessary parts such as VMware View Connection Server and View composer. 1
Installation of VMware View server 1. Start the VMware View Connection Server installation 2
2. Choose to install to the default folder 3
3. Choose to install a View Standard Server. The other types of installations are for installations with more advanced settings such as load balancing and security in mind, and not applicable for this lab setup. 4
4. Choose to automatically configure Windows Firewall, if you haven t turned it off 5
5. Let the installation complete, it will take a few minutes so go grab a coffee 6
6. You may get a warning regarding the allocated memory amount on the View Server, you can safely ignore that warning for this installation as this is just a lab environment. For memory sizing of a proper installation please refer to the needed settings for your implementation size. 7
7. After installation is complete open your web browser and go to https://<your.view.server.ip>/admin 8. Login with the administrator-credentials on the View Server 8
9. First thing you ll have to do after installation is to configure the VMware View license, click on the Edit License -button on top of the page and enter the license number you have gotten from VMware, either a trial or a proper license. 9
10. After adding the license you ll see the following page, with a License expiration date set as well if it s a trial license 10
11. Now to add a vcenter to the View environment so we can actually manage and create our virtual desktops, first click on Servers under View Configuration in the menu to the left 11
12. Click the Add -button in the vcenter Servers -part on top of the page, enter the vcenter information and choose to have Enable View Composer unchecked for now. We ll go through the installation of View composer in just a few moments. 12
13
Installing VMware View Composer View Composer is the service that enables Linked Clone functionality in the Virtual Desktop environment. This service will be installed on the vcenter Server. 1. First of all we need to create a database for the View Composer service. Use Remote Desktop to login to vcenter, and open up SQL Server Management Studio Express. You can connect to and use the already installed vcenter database instance, choose to create a new database and call it ViewComposer. 14
2. Create a database user for this database, for example username ViewComposer, password view2011. Make sure the Enforce password policy is unchecked otherwise you ll not be able to use easy passwords. Change the default database to ViewComposer. 15
3. Edit the database properties of the ViewComposer database, make sure the newly created database user ViewComposer is the owner of the database 16
4. Make sure the database instance allows for Windows and SQL authentication mode. If needed, restart the MSSQL service after configuring this. 17
5. Create a new ODBC connection for this new database, call the ODBC connection ViewComposer as well, keeping it simple. 18
19
20
21
6. Install the View Composer service on the vcenter server from the installation media 7. Choose to install to default directory 22
8. Use the newly created ODBC connection for this service 9. Choose the default ports and to create a default SSL certificate 23
10. If required, reboot after installation is complete 24
11. Now go back to the VMware View administration web GUI and edit the vcenter server connection you added before. Make sure that View Composer is checked. 25
12. Add the domain and domain credentials that will be used to create virtual desktops. You ll need an Active Directory administrative account with rights to add computers. 26
You re finished with the VMware View Server and View Composer installations! By now your VMware View environment is ready for the next module. 27
