Since then, the Institute offers master s degree on Information Management. The major objective of this Institute is to prepare students for becoming specialists on both information technology and management theory. Also, this iinstitute is to place the foundation for the faculty members and students to conduct research on different information management related topics. A doctoral program is launched in 2005 to provide professional talents in information management for Taiwan s industries. 1
MISSION STATEMENT Master of Science The mission of the Institute is to cultivate industrial and information management professionals who possess TIP (Technological knowledge, Innovative foundation, and Perceptive learning). Both the graduate and Ph.D. degree programs share the same mission to achieve the following educational objectives with the concept of TIP: 1. Cultivate students to acquire technological knowledge. 2. Equip students with managerial innovation foundations. 3. Encourage perceptive learning, teaching, and research environment. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Master of Science To achieve the above mission and overall educational objectives, the M.S. Program in Information Management will provide: 1. Explore fundamental and emerging issues in information management systems. 2. Share knowledge and ideas through discussion and collaborations. 3. Develop information management skills to become business leaders or professionals. Doctor of Philosophy To achieve the above mission and overall educational objectives, the Ph.D. Program in Information Management will: 1. Explore alternatives in the use of information management systems as professionals, business leaders or scholars. 2. Share knowledge and ideas through partnerships with outside experts. 3. Develop professional information management skills and achieve research proficiency. DEVELOPMENT The Institute will focus on the linkage of links between information technology and applications on management information systems. Specifically, three areas will be stressed: 1. Management Information Systems (MIS): Different MIS systems are widely popular, while they are the basics of many strategic information systems. Thus excellent MIS systems usually result in efficient management for a company. Research projects or industrial funding are used to enhance the learning of MIS. 2. Electronic Commerce (EC): Due to the fast growth in the development of 2
internet, EC has become one of the highly potential industries in the next century. This Institute has devoted its resources to different EC-related research, and more EC-related projects will be conducted by the faculty members. 3. Hospital Information Systems (HIS): As one of the two top teaching hospitals in Taiwan, The National Cheng Kung University has laid the foundation for the research on HIS. With the advantage of seamless link between the Institute and the Hospital, the collaboration of research and teaching has been eagerly pursued during the last several years. EMPLOYMENT Many graduates are engaged in jobs on IT-related firms or in high-tech industries service industries, such as computer and information systems, general management, and so on. The government has endeavored to increase the productivity of IT-related firms or in high-tech industries for a long time, so that the needs for information management talent are increasing. Currently, the government strives to direct Taiwan towards being the Asia-Pacific Business Center. Therefore, increasing productivity has become more urgent in information industries. The result is that the need for our graduates to be responsible for augmenting the efficiency of production and service is significant.
