2 EECS is a trend; EECS is an endless exploration; EECS is everywhere! Introduction The College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) consists of three academic units, which are the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, the Department of Communication Engineering, and the Department of Electrical Engineering. In addition, all three departments offer master programs. With outstanding faculties and full support on campus, students in the college can efficiently build up firm foundations in the selected theme areas that match their individual interests. Our full range of facilities provides a healthy and complete environment for analysis, design, and experimentation. Independent projects allow students to achieve creativity and innovation. The college also offers a range of programs in cooperation with industries so that students can gain experience in collaborative industrial projects in partnership with experienced companies. Currently EECS is applying for the Ph.D. Program. Through the establishment of a complete educational program, EECS will be able to integrate insights from different fields and achieve even higher levels of research performance.

3 History In Fall 2007, the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was established based on the crucial demand of the national development plan "Two Trillions and Twin Stars". In association with the High-Tech industries in the five northern science parks (Hsin-Tien, Chung-Ho, Tu-Cheng, Tao-Yuan, and Hsin-Chu), this college develops skillful and professional engineers/researchers to meet the demands of the industry. The college provides three study/research programs: The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering and the Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering were founded in Both are the first high-tech departments at National Taipei University and have the most up-to-date faculties and facilities. In 2006, the Graduate Institute of Electrical Engineering was established with the promising goal of achieving a more complete environment in terms of both education and academic research. Since 2011, all the bachelor and master programs of the three departments have been fully available. In 2013, preparation for the Ph.D. Program is underway and this program will also soon be available. Mission We aim to educate students and enrich the research fields in four crucial ways: To produce highly qualified, well-trained, and motivated graduates who possess fundamental knowledge of EECS and leadership skills that will enable them to contribute positively to their chosen industry. To pursue creative research and new technologies in EECS and to integrate the fundamental knowledge of each field to meet the needs of industry, the government, society, and the scientific community in a spirit of innovation. To create collaborative bridges across NTPU and agencies from industry and the government to develop sustainably mutual support for both research and resources. To develop students who possess the ability to engage in lifelong learning which will be necessary for continuing high performance in whatever career path they choose.

4 Vision As a national university located at the Capital, we will grow to be the nationally preeminent university program in our strategic areas of excellence, such as Information Theory, IC Design, Multimedia, Networks and Virtual Reality. Our faculty will be recognized as leaders and innovators, not only followers, in their research and teaching. Our scholarship will set the standard for excellence and impact. Our students will learn to excel in their knowledge and understanding, to find and solve important problems, to communicate their insights, and to develop a passion for improving society. Our staff will be exceptionally well-trained, enthusiastic and dedicated. Our alumni will be leaders in all their activities and will generously support our vision. Facilities for instruction and discovery will be second to none. Our consistent top-five ranking will acknowledge our preeminence. Internationalization In order to create an internationalized campus and cultivate international leaders, EECS is open to overseas applicants and has received at least 10 international students every semester since In this coming fall (2013) a scholarship of NT$ 210,000 (approximately US$ 7,000) will be provided each year for two years (approximately US$ 14,000) for the admitted 5 applicants. Moreover, starting from 2012, most of the courses have been successfully conducted in English to meet the needs of internationalization. As for campus internationalization, NTPU has established exchange contracts with over 50 universities around the world. Such exchanges offer overseas students special opportunities to broaden their horizons, polish their language skills, and experience a different culture at NTPU. International Week To help overseas students feel at home, NTPU regularly holds an International Week at which all foreign students are invited to present and promote features if their countries to local students. Taiwan Tour NTPU hosts a Taiwan tour for the foreign students every year. Students can learn more about Taiwan s unique geography and history, taste the cuisine, and discover the beauty of Formosa. Program in Chinese as a Second Language The program aims to cultivate the students awareness and sensitivity to the similarities and differences between Chinese and other cultures, and build upon their diverse experiences. 5 Department of Introduction The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering is the first high-tech department at Taipei University. The master program was established in In addition to the rich training offered by its professional courses, the Department provides an education in both liberal arts and business & law, an area that is usually weak in a college focusing on science and technology. The professional training in the Department emphasizes the combination of information theory and practice. We enable our students to receive State-of-the-art science and technology information, develop themselves into talented experts mastering both theory and practice, while integrating liberal arts and science & technology through various academic exchanges and industrial communication activities. Our curricula are classified into the following three categories: mathematical theory, major based topics, and their applications. With respect to mathematical theory, we focus on an education in background mathematics and physics that serves as the basis for undertaking advanced research. The major based topics category consists of the core subjects of the Department, including foundation courses related to electronics and information. Finally, all of the practical courses deal with recent developments in the IT industry and explore the latest technologies in order to ensure our students are well-prepared when entering the job market and research institutes.

6 The Department will in the future set up several research labs including an electronics & electro-circuit lab, a digital and micro-computer lab, a network lab, as well as a multi-media and image, mobile computing, communication network, and distribution system, and system chip facilities. As a brand-new department, all of our equipment is of course up-to-date. The electronics, information, and communication industries are among the high-tech industries with the most potential. In addition to this, our graduates can find places in the semi-conductor industry, IC design industry, information software & hardware industry, and communication industry. In other words, our graduates will have more job opportunities to become VIPs in the IT field. Research The main research focus of our department is on networks and multimedia integration as described below: Networks focus on Computer Networks, Mobile Computing, Wireless Networks, Distributed Parallel Systems, Coding Theory, Personal Communication Networks, Data Retrieval, Data Consolidation, Internet Applications, Cryptography and Security, System Reliability Analysis, Algorithm, Digital Design, Digital Sign Processing, Communication Systems, and their uses in various applications. Multimedia focuses on Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, System Simulation, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Learning, Medical Imaging, Neural Networks, Mobile Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Networked 3D Multi-user Games, Smart Space, Wearable Computing, Pervasive Computing, Information Hiding, Embedded Systems, and their uses in various applications. Integrating the Internet, communications and multimedia, together with research into internet applications will become important issues. Hence, the main research directions of our department are the integration of networking and multimedia databases.

7 Department of Introduction The Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering was established by our university in order to coordinate national policy, promote communication technology capacity, and produce advanced the technical personnel needed by industry. It is the first high-tech graduate institute at Taipei University in which business & law and liberal arts play a dominant role. Its bachelor program, the Department of Communication Engineering, was established in In addition to the strong training offered by its professional courses, the Department also provides an education in business & law and liberal arts, something that is usually lacking in a college concentrating on science and technology. This is done in order to cultivate talented high-tech experts with a foundation in both liberal arts and management. The department is oriented toward the development of communication system design, communication chip design, networking, mobile computing, digital signal processing, and multi-media communication. As far as our laboratories are concerned, the department currently has a communication & network chip lab, a digital signal processing and application lab, a wireless communication lab, and a computer communication network lab, for student teaching and experimentation. Our faculty, in addition to the faculty approved by the Ministry of Communication, has members from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. In the future, we will have over 20 professors with Ph.D. degrees who will instruct our students to be experts in the communication industry.

8 The department emphasizes training and the exercising of independent thinking and innovative design competence. We invite scholars and experts to give lectures on a regular basis, and actively compete for cooperation with industry. We also ask our students to participate in the research projects of their advisors and to take part in the various cooperative activities between industry and academics, encouraging them as well to take part in various competitions organized by the department to demonstrate what they have learned and to help them obtain critical experience. Research We carry out world leading research covering several overlapping areas: High-speed Wireless Transmission Systems focus on Communication System Design, Communication System IC Design, Network Switch Design, Digital Signal Processing, Multimedia Communication IP Design, etc. Intelligent Communication Networks focus on Signal Processing, Communication Systems, Digital Design, Wireless Communication Systems, Signal Detection and Channel Estimation, and their uses in various applications. In the twenty-first century, High-speed Communications and Network Integrations are new communication trends. The new research areas, such as High-speed Wireless Transmission Systems, Intelligent Communication Networks etc. are open to new discoveries and closely related to human needs. Our institute must be active in this new era, where we are pioneers for these new trends. Therefore, these two research areas are our main topics. We have an outstanding research team engaged in High-speed Wireless Transmission Systems and developing the next generation Intelligent Communication Network. Moreover, as these two areas are closely related to each other, we expect to establish a reputation in these two fields, and become the leading research institute in Taiwan.

9 Department of Introduction The Graduate Institute of Electrical Engineering was established in 2006, and its bachelor program was established in In association with the High-Tech industries, skillful and professional engineers/researchers are developed in this department to meet the demands of industry. The department provides interdisciplinary research programs, such as System Chip Design (Digital, Analog, and RF), Electronic Design Automation (EDA), Multicore Computer Systems, Information and Communication Security Systems, Virtual Reality and Simulation, Global Positioning System (GPS), and Geometry Information System (GIS). In the near future, the department will have more than 20 professors (Ph. D) in the related fields. Creativity, innovation, and training in multidisciplinary engineering are emphasized and developed in this department. Meanwhile, students are encouraged to join research projects to obtain valuable research experience. Furthermore, to combine theory and practice, all students will be appointed to an internship at CIC (Center of Integrated Circuits) or at other high-tech corporations. Thus, all students will be educated to become well-qualified electrical engineers able to meet the current and future needs of the global electronic industry.

10 Research We carry out world leading research covering several overlapping areas: VLSI Design, Parallel Computing or Parallel Processing, Electronic Design Automation (EDA) focuses on algorithms, tools, and applications for scalable high-performance computer systems and the important issue of the scalability of parallel algorithms (or applications) Mixed Signal IC Design, High Efficiency Power IC Design, RF IC Design, Nanoscale Design focuses on power electronic devices and integrated circuits, and their uses in various applications. Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Technology focuses on AI including such traits as reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, communication, perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects. Automotive electrical and electronics systems focus on electrical principles, circuits, and how to use a multi-meter to check circuit continuity, current flow and voltage measurements in circuits and electrical components commonly used in modern vehicle systems. FlexRay Drive-by-Wire Systems focus on the evolution of automotive networking technology that will help users with higher data rates, deterministic behavior and improved fault tolerance in real-time applications.
