1 2.2 Master of Science Degrees The Department of Statistics at FSU offers three different options for an MS degree. 1. The applied statistics degree is for a student preparing for a career as an applied statistician or as a statistical consultant at the MS level. This program emphasizes statistical methodology and consulting. The graduate degree received is an Master of Science in statistics. 2. The mathematical statistics degree places an additional emphasis upon probability theory and statistical inference. This degree prepares graduates to function as statisticians at the MS level. It is also a preparatory program for the PhD degree in statistics. The graduate degree received is a Master of Science in statistics. 3. The MS in biostatistics degree prepares students to apply statistical principles, processes, applications, and analytical methods to design, implement, and analyze health related studies including both experimental (clinical trials) and observational (epidemiological) studies. The graduate degree received is a Master of Science in biostatistics. All options provide a route for a career in statistics. Prospective students should note, however, that the mathematical statistics and biostatistics degrees provide the best preparation for continuation into the doctoral programs (PhD in statistics or biostatistics) in this department. A student who finishes the applied statistics program can continue into a PhD program provided that they complete the core courses for the MS in mathematical statistics or the MS in biostatistics and pass PhD qualifying exams. The total academic credits required for graduation for each MS degree is 36 credit hours with no less than 30 credit hours taken for a letter grade. The minimum cumulative GPA in all courses is All required courses must be taken for a letter grade Applied Statistics The applied statistics option emphasizes proficiency in applied statistics, statistical consulting, and computational methods. Moderate training in probability and mathematical statistics is included. Elective course work may be taken in statistics, in mathematics, or in an area of application. Students entering this program should have had mathematical preparation through third semester calculus. Familiarity with matrix operations is useful. Normal entry to the program is in the fall semester. Table 2 provides the required courses for this degree. At least four classes must be selected from Table 3. Elective courses must be taken to bring total hours to at least 36 semester hours. Proficiency in a programming language or with a standard statistical programming package is strongly recommended. Programs of study (see section 4.2) are developed individually in consultation between students and their academic advisors, for approval by the students MS supervisory committee (see Section 4.1) and the department chair. If a student has already taken a course listed above, it need not be repeated. Instead, the student should substitute a more advanced course or an alternate course. A typical course program for a student who has not previously taken any of the required courses is given in Table 4. 6

Students must take at least four of these Mathematical Statistics The mathematical statistics master s degree prepares a student for a professional career in industry or government, for a teaching career in a small college, or for further study toward the doctorate in statistics. The program emphasizes statistical theory, probability theory and mathematical analysis, as well as applied statistics. Students selecting the mathematical statistics option have usually completed the essentials of an undergraduate mathematics major. Normal entry to the program is in the fall semester. Students selecting this option without two semesters of advanced calculus (MAA or its equivalent) may require more than four semesters to complete their MS requirements. An individual program of study (section 4.2) is developed in consultation between the students and their academic advisors with a view toward the students career goals and interests and possible continuation into the PhD program. The courses listed in Table 5 constitute a basic core of probability theory, statistical theory, applied statistics and real analysis and must be included in each program of study 7
