2 CIC International Student Highlights Fall ,792 international students were enrolled in CIC schools in Fall International Student Status Undergraduates 28,408 PhD Candidates 19,077 Masters Degree 10,447 Optional Practical Training (OPT) 6,748 Non-Degree 3,782 Professional (e.g. JD, MD, etc.) 2,330 The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Purdue University, and the University of Michigan enrolled the most international students among the CIC schools. The Top 5 Programs of Study were Engineering, Business, Social Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, and Biological & Biomedical Sciences. The most international students originated from China, South Korea, and India, making up 64% of the total studying at CIC schools. About 10% of graduate enrolled international students are on Optional Practical Training (OPT), meaning they are authorized for temporary employment authorization that relates to the student s field of study. 3 International Students Studying in the U.S., Fall 2010 to Spring 2011 National Trends According to the Council of Graduate Schools and IIE 1,2 : Nationwide, International students currently comprise about 14.2% of all graduate students in the United States. They represent 22.4% of all graduate students within CIC schools (Fall 2011). More than 60% of all international students receive the majority of their funds from personal and family sources, and these students contribute over $21 billion to the U.S. economy through expenditures on tuition and living expenses.
