Main Programme EXHIBITIONS

BRAVE FIXED WORLD The future needs a new relationship with making. A forward-thinking, backward-looking, sideways-stepping kind of making. A making born of the imaginative use of skills. Something like fixing. Exhibition Curator: Daniel Charny Director at From Now On London

TEST ZONE The mission of the Test Zone is simple to become familiar with the materials: wood, paper, metal and textiles. We ll let you explore their qualities, test the potential of each of them and use them creatively to construct objects according to our own ideas. Curator: Tabanda

CITY LUST For the Lodz festival 2014 artist Charlie Koolhaas will create an installation based on her upcoming photography book City Lust. The audience will be invited to walk around the book exhibit, which contains photographs of urban scenes from five different global cities: London, Dubai, Lagos, Guangzhou and Houston. Curator: Charlie Koolhaas

NASZ NASZ is the result of searching for items that fulfil the needs, without being excessive or bizarre. It features new versions of successful products alongside fresh pieces potential of which has not yet been discovered. NASZ is an exclusive collection of contemporary design that consists of items designed and manufactured in Poland. It is coherent, yet multithreaded and acts on different levels. It has been co-created by acclaimed product designers, graphic designers, illustrators, typographers and multimedia artists as well as design students, manufacturers and craftsmen.

Exhibition organizer: Culture.pl Curators: Gosia Rygalik, Tomek Rygalik / Studio Rygalik

RESOLUTE DESIGN CHANGES The exhibition explores the current state of social responsibility taken up by designers. In vigorous projects these firm designers are determined to contribute to the process of change in society and their profession. Based on moderation, inspiration and engagement they encourage people to shape their opinions and stimulate them to take action. Graphic designers became important influencers of man s behavior and opinions. Now existing structures are questioned more than ever, other forces are shaping graphic design. Graphic designers take up their social responsibility in a counter reaction connecting ideas, information and people. The exhibiton has 3 chapters: Curators: Dennis Elbers Sven Ehmann

CHAPTER ONE: Refresh to influence behaviour CHAPTER TWO: Review grip by understanding CHAPTER THREE: Revolt to raise awareness

NEW CRAFTS The exhibition presents lamp designs that are the result of a collaboration between the designer and representatives of craft professions. Nowe Rzemiosło presents also a detailed process of creation of individual components in the workshops of craftsmen such as metal spinner, stonemason, glass-blower, ceramicist, and locksmith. The exhibition forms part of the activities under the NoweRzemioslo.pl platform created under the 2013 Young Poland scholarship programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The aim of the platform is to promote the products of professional handwork through the use of craft skills and techniques for the purpose of creation of a series of modern objects. NEW CRAFTS

RECIPE FOR SMALL DESIGN Recipe for small design is an innovative educational project that consists of an exhibition and a publication. We invited to cooperate daring designers and project groups that agreed to share their ideas on the basis of Creative Commons license. Thus, the title recipes created for recipients of all ages give an opportunity to create by oneself the objects according to the designers ideas. Recipe for small design is a project that breaks the stereotypical thinking about design as something expensive, exclusive, only for the elite. Well-thoughtout, intelligent and witty, the recipes are an attempt to define and grasp design in our surroundings. Precise instructions enable one to create a given object by herself/himself - so the recipient decides if the given idea goes into production or not. Recipe for small design

Curators: Magdalena Kreis, Natalia Romaszkan Authors: Fontarte, odrzeczy, Szymon Hanczar, Bogdan Kosak, LIMO Design, MALAFOR, Karina Marusińska, Tomasz i Maciej Niemiec, Noviki Studio Grafiki, Alicja Patanowska, Paulina Plizga, Robert Pludra, Pracownia k., Joanna Rusin, Jakub Sobiepanek, Maja Szczypek ( M.A.M Airbag), Nikodem Szpunar, ZetPety - Recycling Design

THE WARDROBE The project was carried out in cooperation with the students of the second year of design at the Pedagogical University of Cracow, under didactic supervision of Bartosz Mucha, a 2D and 3D designer involved in projects at the interface of art and design, the founder of the Poorex brand. The series of the presented objects was created as a result of a creative exercise that the student got because of reorganisation of the studio. In the place where a CNC router was to be installed there was a huge wardrobe that looked as if it was straight from the 80s (or a decade older). The students got a task to solve this problem in creative way to take advantage of the wardrobe as a raw material and an opportunity for a design project. The wardrobe

The condition was to collide the rawness of the boards of which the piece of furniture was made with pure whiteness or blackness of another material, and the aim was to design a functional object that does not exceed the dimensions of 20cm/20cm/20cm. Another stimulant was to draw a watchword illustrating a day-to-day ritual. The end result was a series of interesting and inspiring objects. Curator: Bartosz Mucha, Faculty of Arts of Pedagogical University of Cracow Authors: Martyna Gadziała, Urszula Grad, Dariusz Iwan, Michał Jachymek, Magdalena Zębala, Gabriela Marzec, Marianna Konieczna, Magdalena Grzebyk, Iwona Pieczara, Joanna Opałko, Olga Monka, Kaja Męclewska, Aleksandra Ochońska, Tomasz Różak, Angelika Różak

SPECULATIONS SPECULATIONS is an exhibition that presents some of the many projects created during the four-year activity of pangenerator, a new-media collective. All objects presented have something in common and that is their experimental and speculative nature. In principle, these are the objects whose main purpose is not to meet the needs of the market but rather to satisfy curiosity of the designers who ask the question and what if?. Questions and the materialised answers to them relate to issues such as new tools of expression in music, new ways of communication, the future of jewellery, use of natural processes in designing, and use of emergent phenomena in the art of new media. In addition, video documentation of the projects that could not be included in the exhibition will be presented.

MEDUSA DESIGN PROJECTS Petra Lilja puts focus on craft and sustainability in her design. As a trained industrial designer she explores the field between hand made and industrially produced objects, with the aim to find sustainable solutions. Medusa Design Projects started in June 2013 and is an ongoing project where Petra explores the relationship between design and craftsmanship. The project builds on the myth of Medusa turns wood into stone. This transformation is done with the help of decorative painting a traditional craft anchored in our own cultural history. Petra Lilja

During the first days of the exhibition Petra Lilja will be working in the exhibition, making and decor painting jewelry. The exhibition will also show glasses and mirrors by Petra Lilja who s methods consists of deconstruction and remixing new and recycled materials. Other pieces shown are mirrors, glasses and furniture. The Medusa Blanket is designed in collaboration with Icelandic design collective Vik Prjónsdóttir.

1000 YEARS IN NECKLACES The 1000 years in necklaces exhibition is part of an interdisciplinary project Modern beauty of the ancient wood, started by the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve in 2013. The Reserve invited Anna Orska, Poznań based jewellery designer who uses rare materials, to create jewellery inspired by the 1000 year long history and use the original historic oak from which the city of Poznań had been built. Thus a unique collection of twelve necklaces was produced. Project curator: Agnieszka Stempin Anna Orska

Festival Guests SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

BRAVOS Juli Capella decided to introduce 21 designers and show 21 objects designed by them, each against the background of the portrait of its author. The aim of the exhibition is to present the contemporary Spanish avant-garde by showing an apparently non-homogenous group of designers (what they have in common is that all of them were born after 1960), selected according to the criterion of high quality design work. If there is something that can characterize them, it must be a strong individualism and desire of each of them to remain distinct from other designers. In front of the photographs showing the designers in their workshops, one can see their works. Juli Capella

BRAVOS Patricia Urquiola - Kettal Maia Collection Curro Claret - Chapapote Nacho Carbonell - Concrete Animals Jaime Hayon - Josephine M

TASTE OF AN OBJECT The exhibition is a story about products told in nonverbal language. Each of the objects would be also presented in a form of specially composed dish. The project welcomes to savour in the warmth of a heater, speed of a bike, light of a street lamp, comfort of furniture or child s play experience. There will also be something to nourish the soul and the memories. Chosen products are the achievements of firms located in Pomeranian Science&Technology Park in Gdynia and others.

Organiser: Design Center Gdynia Curator: Design Group Razy2 Authors of presented objects: Aeonform, Creme Cycles, FlowAir, Interior Records, Katarzyna Piętowska, Malafor, None Grupa, Razy2, Siled, Studio 1:1, TABANDA, Witamina D, Studio LOKO + Andervision

CITY+ Designers participating in the project are young or very young, but they had already managed to mark their presence with interesting realizations, involving themselves in important exhibitions and winning prizes in design contests. Most of them come from the hinterland and this is most likely why the seaside and open nature of Gdynia capture their imagination most profoundly. The task assigned to them is to create projects targeted at residents and visitors of the city in any age group. These projects should engage in a dialogue with the environment and respond to the needs and desires of people. These are installations such as urban furniture, objects and accessories designed for rest, relaxation and leisure. The other objects are souvenirs functional objects that carry an emotional load by means of their matter and the associations they trigger. Agnieszka Jacobson- Cielecka

CITY+ Designers: Izabela Bołoz Jan Kochański, Kosmos Project Agata Matlak-Lutyk & Jan Lutyk Natural Born Design Jola Starzak & Dawid Strębicki Tabanda The exhibition was prepared for Gdynia Design Days 2014. The organiser of the exhibition is Pomeranian Science &Technology Park in Gdynia Gdynia Design Center and The City of Gdynia.

ANATOMY OF EUROPE UKRAINE, RUSSIA, BELARUS The escalation of the Middle East conflict, dangerous Russian game and violence, destroyed the order of contemporary Europe. Because of this the project, after numerous modifications, has finally assumed a transnational character: it touches upon local issues shown in international contexts. In the contemporary world, when a man, whether just a citizen or an artist, is becoming a tool of political warfare, and the world itself is plunged into an abyss of dullness and lies, our message has to be simple and clear. Incidents in Europe vivified artistic environment, art became the universal medium of social expression and a relay of common needs and truths. Just simple mottos. Black and white. No half-tones. No shadows. Curator: Ksenia Kaniewska

ANATOMY OF EUROPE UKRAINE, RUSSIA, BELARUS There are two parts in this Project. The first one features works made of porcelain which is taking on new functions today. Fragile and whimsical, it is becoming a cultural and political manifesto due to the message behind its tangible form. This is a tale of identity and tradition told in simple words by women. Also, a tale of freedom and revolution. The second part of this Project are objects meant to be the manifesto of the generation of artists who have happened to create their works in this highly complicated world of today. EDUCREATION

EDUCREATION Where children meet design Educreation is part of the Łódź Design Festival dedicated to children the most responsive and the most curious explorers of the world of design. For three years now we have been arranging unique programmes especially for them, but also for their parents and carers, in order to teach them by means of fun and games what design really is. Each year we organize the Educational Playroom equipped with creative toys, a series of creative workshops and an all-year calendar for children to take home. Additionally, a special guide takes children for the so-called Walks around the adult exhibitions, acquainting them with the world of design in a language which is comprehensible for them. This year the Playroom has been organized under the auspices of the Paradyż Ceramics, Chief Patron of the Festival.

Contest & Exhibition

The make me! contest and exhibition are one of the landmarks of the Łódź Design Festival, and one of the most important international contests aimed at young designers. The ultimate goal of make me! is to promote the young generation of designers during each consecutive edition of the festival. This year 21 projects have been selected out of 247 applications; the selected projects will be presented at the exhibition. The common factor of all these projects are a mature presentation of the submitted work. This year edition is perhaps most international of all. Curator of post-contest exhibition: Paweł Grobleny

FESTIVAL CENTRES

ART_INKUBATOR & PIOTRKOWSKA 250 The tradition of Lodz Design Festival is to present the best projects in climatic, post-industrial spaces. For the first time though, the Festival will take place in two large Centres. Architectural Design Studio Oshi will watch over the arrangements in both Festival Centres. This year s concept is based on the idea to create an open space which refers to a construction site. The exhibition is supposed to freely interpenetrate.

FESTIVAL CENTRE 1 After 4 years of break, Lodz Design Festival is back into the revitalized space at Tymienieckiego Street 3. It is here where one of the two Festival Centres will be located. The old factory sites, which belonged to Karol Scheibler and Ludwik Grohman, now form the Art_Inkubator. The inauguration of this space took place in May this year. In this wide space you can find some of the artistic workrooms, auditorium, conference rooms and café. Here we will present the exhibitons from the Main Programme carried out in accordance with the Brave New World theme, as well as the Educreation events for children, lectures and meetings. Art_Inkubator Tymienieckiego 3

FESTIVAL CENTRE 2 This year a significant part of the LDF2014 programme will be available in the second Festival Centre located in the former Weaving Mill of Marcus Silberstein in the Piotrkowska Str. 250. This building is one of the most interesting examples of industrial architecture in Lodz, built in 1878. The architect of this building was Adolf Zeligson. In this space we will show, among others, the must have exhibition which presents the results of a contest for the best Polish implementations, projects from the Open Programme enrollment and the make me! exhibition. Furthermore, there will be a Design Pop-up Shop, food trucks, reading room, bookstore and the House of Tomorrow zone Piotrkowska 250
