BSB30315 Overview of Qualification INFORMATION PACK CERTIFICATE III IN MICRO BUSINESS OPERATIONS BSB30315 The Certificate III in Micro Business Operations BSB30315 is a recognised leading qualification that helps individuals to establish a small or micro business. The Certificate III covers 10 units of small business competency in areas such as market research, personal business skills, financial marketing and operational plans, WHS, leadership, business technology, customer service, and production of a business proposal Students can gain the Certificate III with BEC through a choice or blend of delivery methods including public courses, open learning, recognition of prior learning RPL and recognition of current competency RCC. This qualification is competency based and is gained by providing evidence of competency in the Units. Students carry out assessment projects, which create real benefits for their organisation. BEC provides all learning and assessment materials required to complete the course. This is a challenging and exciting course and both participants and organisations gain great benefits from it. Content and Competencies The Certificate III covers 10 Units of competency at AQF Level III. Five core units and five elective units must all be completed and assessed to gain the Qualification. The five elective units can be selected from any endorsed Training Package of which one unit may be selected form either a Certificate II or Certificate IV qualification. Electives must be relevant to the work outcome, local industry requirements and the qualification level. Units must not duplicate those available in BSB15 Business Services Training Package. BEC uses resources purchased from Innovative Business Resources which are pre packaged units they have been selected to meet the needs of Micro businesses. It is a tried and tested package that has been used successfully for a number of years by the BEC in our local area. Options are available please discuss your ideas with the BEC Training Manager. As of January 2015 all enrolling students will require a USI (unique student identifier) the BEC is able to help you get this registration, or if you already have a USI you will be required to present this number as part of your enrolment. 1

Delivery Options The Certificate III is available through BEC through the following options. Participants and organisations can use one of the options or can choose a blend of more than one option: 1. Public Courses 2. Distance Learning 3. Recognition Processes: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)/Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) 4. Mixed Mode: A combination of face-to-face and self paced study Please contact us to discuss your specific needs. Delivery Option 1: Public Courses The BEC delivers Public Courses in a series of pre selected units that includes all 10 required units. If you are not happy with this predetermined list please talk to the Training Manager who is happy to discuss a range of options with you. Students can take the courses in any order and build up the qualification over a time frame that suits them. Delivery Option 2: Distance Learning BEC provides resources for distance learning. These are word documents sent as email attachments. Selected written and website resources are also recommended. Students must have a computer with email facilities and a program that will use word documents to be able to complete distance learning. All communication is by mail and email and telephone help is provided. Students must be highly motivated and organised to choose this style of delivery please discuss this option with the Training Manager. Delivery Option 3: Recognition Processes: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) are processes where competency is recognised, without the need for further training or development. Participants in a program may be able to demonstrate competency for one or more units. BEC has specialised Recognition Processes and instruments, which help you easily present evidence for assessment. Delivery Option 4: Mixed Mode: combination of face-to-face workshops and self paced study BEC works with individuals wanting to complete the Micro Business Operations Certificate III in a format that suits their individual needs. If participants can t attend normal scheduled training or need to undertake the qualification when no public course is being offered. BEC delivers this course as a series of pre selected units that include all ten required units (five core and five elective). We train face-to-face at a mutually agreed to time and set specific tasks and activities for the participant to achieve between face-to-face visits. The BEC Trainer / Mentors within our organisation will assist you to ensure that business competency is demonstrated in a small\micro business. Participants will produce a Business Proposal for assessment that is designed to be operational. The course also contains real life business scenarios and assessment to enhance student s knowledge and skills. 2

This Qualification is useful for: Small Business owners new to business Operators thinking about becoming a small business owner Existing small business owners seeking extra skills and knowledge and\or qualification Students apply knowledge and a range of skills to a variety of roles as well as operate in a business context. They must deal with limited contingencies. They may be involved in some complex decisions and use competencies within routines, methods and procedures and use discretion and judgment for self and others in using resources, services and processes to achieve outcomes. This course can be conducted in a simulated or preferably in a real business environment. Assessment Assessment for this Qualification is by evidence to demonstrate competency in the preparation and operation of a business proposal BEC utilises assessment techniques that provides valuable development to both the candidate and to the organisation. 4

The assessment consists of three forms of evidence and alternative scenario for those in a simulated environment: 1. Business Research 2. Business Proposal 3. Business Mentoring 4. Business Workbooks & Scenario The Business Research Activities are related to your Business proposal and require evidence of student s application of competency in researching their business idea. Participant s research documents are signed off by your assessor. The Business Proposal is completed by each student. Students agree to the Business Proposal with their Mentor/Trainer. Business Mentoring is completed at the end of training you are mentored quarterly and you must operate your business, completing the documents as requested by your mentor. Business Scenario is completed at the end of training you are required to complete all assessment tasks in your simulated environment and it will be signed off by your assessor. A BEC representative assesses student assessment documents and participants are sent assessment feedback by email/hard copy. Candidates are assessed as either COMPETENT or NOT YET COMPETENT. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Can my previous studies help give me advanced standing in my Qualification? Yes. If you have valid Statements of Attainment for units in the qualification you are applying for then the Business Enterprise Centre will recognise them and there is no fee for this. If you have completed some similar courses that cover part of the qualification you may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning for certain units. You will receive an RPL Guide to help you. An Assessor will review your application evidence against the competency standards and make a decision. There is a scheduled fee for this process. What equipment do I need for BEC s Business Programs? You need access to a computer that can receive and send emails and attachments. You need to be able to process Word documents. A printer is essential for you at home. What computer skills do I need for BEC s Business Management Programs? You need to receive and send emails and attachments. You need to be able to access and fill in Word and excel documents. If you choose the distance delivery method for Micro Business Operations you also need to be able to access the Internet. Do I have to write essays for BEC s Business Management Programs? You don t have to write essays. You do have to write business reports on what you do. You need writing skills appropriate for your work function. If you have literacy issues you should discuss this with your Mentor. BEC does not judge your writing ability as long as you can provide appropriate evidence of your competency. Are BEC s Qualifications recognised? Yes they are recognised by the Australian National Training Authority. It is recognised in New Zealand through an international agreement on Mutual Recognition. They are recognised in other countries as an international qualification of high repute. Small Business Management Qualifications are also recognised by businesses and government as a powerful means of selecting qualified people for positions. Will BEC Qualifications get me advanced standing if I go on to study at University? Generally Universities provide credit or advanced standing for recognised qualifications providing they are relevant to the course you intend to go on to. The Business Enterprise Centre is a Registered Training Organisation and has to meet and be audited against the National Standards for registration as an RTO to issue this qualification. Our organisation has specific needs. Can you tailor the training to meet those needs? Yes the BEC can do this and we have for previous clients with specific needs.
