In some societies, gender and poverty have a major effect on the availability and level of education provided. It focuses on the language choices that are associated with a variety of social purposes of language use. Teach Spelling and Pronunciation (TESTSP402A) This unit explores sound- spelling relationships in English and techniques for teaching spelling and pronunciation. 5. Teach Speaking (TESTSE402A) This unit is concerned with the skills and knowledge required to understand the functional nature of language use. It addresses the skills required to plan and implement a speaking lesson which incorporates practical techniques for developing fluency and accuracy. This unit draws on Unit 2, Analyse and Teach English Language, and is supported by Unit 4, Teach Spelling and Pronunciation.
3 6. Teach Listening (TESTLE402A) This unit focuses on the skills and knowledge required to listen to a range of texts. It addresses the skills required to plan and deliver a listening lesson which incorporates practical techniques to develop listening skills and strategies. 7. Teach Reading (TESTRE402A) With a focus on the functional nature of language, this unit explores the skills and knowledge required to read a range of authentic or published texts for specific social purposes. It also gives the skills to plan reading lessons with practical techniques for developing reading skills. 8. As well, it addresses the practical techniques to plan lessons that will develop writing skills for specific genres. 9. Develop Resource Files (TESDRF402A) Having an efficient filing system for your resources will make your future as an ESL teacher much easier. It is frustrating and time wasting to be unable to locate a resource that you developed previously that you know would suit an upcoming lesson. This unit addresses the practical techniques required to organize materials and/or resources around grammar points, topics, ESL student levels and communicative functions. You will also be evaluating published resources such as an ESL student workbook and a grammar reference book. These are common, commercially available resources in frequent use by ESL teachers. Please note however, you are not required to purchase a student workbook or a grammar reference book to be able to complete this unit. The Elective Units are: 1. Teach ESL to Early Childhood Learners (TESECL403A) This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work with early childhood learners. It addresses the practical techniques required to examine the characteristics of the language ose of learners at this stage of life and development and their learning goals, with application to appropriate ESL classroom techniques. It also looks at evaluation techniques appropriate to teaching ESL for early childhood learners. 2. Teach ESL to Primary School Aged Learners (TESPSL403A) This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to work with primary school aged children, with recognition of the fact that at this stage of life and development, the stakeholders in the education of an individual are numerous, and their agendas will influence the development of any learning program. This unit also addressed the need to analyse the language use typical of learners of this age group, in terms of social purposes and linguistic features, all within the range of the middle childhood stage of cognitive and psychosocial development. Techniques for teaching language, skills for planning learning program and implementing learning activities in the classroom are developed. In addition, evaluation methods are discussed along with appropriate feedback and correction strategies. 3. Teach ESL to Teenage Learners (TESTAL403A) This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to work with teenage learners. It
4 addresses the practical techniques required to examine the characteristics of language use of learners at this stage of life an development and their learning goals, with application to appropriate ESL classroom techniques. 4. Use Music, Art and Drama in TESOL (TESMAD403A) This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to incorporate music, art and drama into the ESL classroom. It addresses the practical techniques required to use music, art and drama across a variety of ages and stages of development in using English as a second language. 5. Use Technology to Assist ESL Learning (TESTEC403A) This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to use technology as an integral part of some ESL learning activities. It addresses the practical techniques required to teach some basic technology literacy, develop a portfolio of internet sites, software designed for ESL learning and other technology- based activities which can contribute to the learning process. In this age of ever- increasing use of technology, people from every background, including n- English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB), need to be able to use computers. In fact, the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) includes being able to use a computer as a literacy skill. One aspect of this unit therefore is developing the skills to be able to teach basic computer literacy to people from NESB. This can be quite a challenge when some ESL students have low first language literacy levels and are developing their English literacy skills as they learn ESL. 6. Work with Volunteers in ESL Contexts (TESWWV403A) This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to work with volunteer workers in ESL programs. It addresses the practical techniques required to recruit, train, monitor and support volunteers. The following tasks are designed to help you to plan for including volunteers in an ESL program. You may answer these questions in relation to: i. An existing program ii. A proposed program: You may have identified a need for a program where none exists and so answer the questions and complete the tasks in relation to a proposed program to iii. meet that need A proposed adjunct program: You may have identified a need that is not being met by an existing program, and so may complete these tasks in relation to a proposed adjunct program or a proposed redesigned program to meet that need. Whichever situation you choose (from i iii above), you are required to research a real- life ESL teaching situation that involves volunteers, e.g. volunteer tutors working with paid teachers, a community group, etc. 7. Establish Community Based English Classes (TESCBC403A) This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to set up and coordinate community- based ESL programs. It addresses the practical techniques required to set up an ESL class outside of formal learning institutions.
