Department: Governance and Planning Services Governance and Planning is one of a group of professional services departments reporting to the Secretary and Registrar (the others are Registry Services, the Health and Safety Service, and Business mprovement Services). University Secretariat is one of two teams located within Governance and Planning Services; the other is Strategic Planning and ntelligence. Team: University Secretariat The University Secretariat is part of the Secretary and Registrar's Directorate and reports to the Deputy Secretary. We work closely with all the University s senior managers and with the Board of Governors, the Academic Board and other corporate groups. Team members at all levels have the opportunity to produce work directly for the University s xecutive. The team's role and the nature of our work mean that we have access to information on a wide range of University policies and activities. Some of this is confidential and consequently a professional attitude to handling confidential information is an essential characteristic of all staff in the team. We are a small team (7.5fte) responsible for supporting the main decision making bodies of the University and for providing information, advice and direction on corporate governance. We work closely with the University s external legal advisers and have a role in ensuring that University policies, procedures and practices are compliant with existing and emerging legal requirements. Current specific responsibilities include: providing legal advice and undertaking legal research in all areas of the law relevant to the student experience advising on Data Protection Act and Freedom of nformation Act requirements promoting, advising, supporting and coordinating activity related to equality and diversity supporting the development and implementation of the University's risk management and business continuity framework liaison with the University s internal auditors providing support for the Board of Governors and its committees; Academic Board, Professoriate Committee and Honorary Awards Committee; and other University committees including University xecutive Group, quality and Diversity Board, Health, Safety and Welfare Committee and the nformation and Consultative Committee We work hard and frequently we work on several tasks at the same time within tight deadlines. But the work is interesting and varied and we are at the centre of University developments. The culture within the Directorate is one of mutual support, good humour and informality. Most communication takes place on an informal basis although we have monthly team meetings. All staff have annual appraisals with their manager at which objectives are set and personal development plans agreed. n all our work we act with integrity, tact, forbearance and discretion and follow the code of professional standards of the Association of University Administrators.
