DECEMBER 2, 2014 NOTABLE ALUMNI HONORED AT TEACHER EDUCATION BANQUET The Teacher Education department hosted their annual Alumni Banquet on October 1st, 2014, in the AT Room. Each year the department chooses Adrian College Alumni to honor at the banquet. The 2014 Honorable Alumni were: Chris Stewart, Head Strength Coach at Olivet College, also keynote speaker at the event, and Robert Wright, current principal at Onsted High School. Chris Stewart Robert Wright Chris graduated from Adrian College in 2004, with a Teaching Certification in Physical Education, Health, and Recreation as well as Biology. Chris also holds a Master of Science in Sports Administration and Coaching from Michigan State University. Chris has worked at Olivet College since 2008 most recently as the head strength and condition coach and student athlete advisory committee advisor. Prior to that, Chris was a teacher at Freedom High School in Florida. Robert graduated from Adrian College in 1991, majoring in Secondary Mathematics Education. Robert also holds a Master s Degree from Eastern Michigan University in Educational Leadership and Administration as well as an Educational Specialist Degree from Siena Heights University in Educational Leadership and Administration. Robert has been the Onsted High School Principal since 2012. Prior to that, Robert was the assistant principal at Onsted from 2007-2012. From 1999 to 2007, Robert was the assistant principal and athletic director at Sand Creek Community Schools.. Chris defines leadership as the honor of serving others by providing them with viable access to success in times of need and prosperity. Robert is described as a, Dynamic, caring, purpose-driven educator with demonstrated capabilities in classroom experience, data informed decision making, and collaborative leadership.
INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATION PAGE 3 MICHIGAN TEACHER OF THE YEAR: MELODY ARABO Melody Arabo spent Wednesday, November 12th, 2014 visiting Teacher Education classes and events. She was also a guest speaker in the Hickman Boardroom from 4:30 5:30 PM that was open to the public. Melody Arabo has been a third grade teacher at Keith Elementary in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District since 2002. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Teaching and Curriculum, both from Michigan State University. She was named Michigan Teacher of the Year on May 15, 2014. In her role as MTOY, Melody plans to highlight all of the outstanding advancements of the public school system and celebrate the hard work and unmatched dedication of public school teachers. Topics of interest included: Best Teaching Practice School Safety Assessment Classroom Management/Discipline Challenges and Solutions Open Session for Queries of Interest Melody Arabro, Dr. Milner and Professor Hiscock with TED students. It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop. Confucius LUNCH N LEARN The Teacher Education Department has begun a Professional Development Lunch n' Learn Series for students interested in entering the field of Education. The first in the series was a presentation sponsored by the Michigan Education Association (MEA) on the topic of "Sexual Harassment in the Work Place". The workshop was arranged with the support of Diane Langan from the MEA who also provided lunches for our students. The presenter was Jeff Murphy, a legal representative from the Michgan Education Association. The second in the series, was offered on November 19th, with Melody Arabo, Michigan Teacher of the Year, presenting on the topic of "Classroom Management".
PAGE 4 NORTHWEST OHIO CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION Dr, Andrea R. Milner, Dr. Vanessa Morrison, and Teacher Education student, Nicole Gestwite, attended the 2014 N.W.O. Symposium on Saturday, November 1, 2014. The N.W.O. Symposium is a very popular professional development opportunity in the region for K-12 pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, graduate students, school administrators, and higher education faculty. Dr. Milner and Dr. Morrison proudly presented at the symposium covering the topic of: Literacy in Support of Science: A Closer Look at Cross-Curricular Instructional Practice. Symposium TEACHER EDUCATION AND THE CHICAGO CENTER Dr. Milner, Dr. Mirtes, Julie Sinkovitz, and Dr. Morrison visit Jessica Raymor, a Teacher Education student, in Chicago on November 22, 2014. Jessica is currently meeting her student teaching requirements through the Chicago Center in collaboration with Adrian College.
TEACHER EDUCATION STUDENTS AT THE MICHIGAN ASSOCIATION FOR HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, RECREATION AND DANCE CONVENTION [MAPHERD]. WELCOME, NEW PEK MEMBERS! Haley Barnes and Professor Al Craven attended the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) state wide convention in Traverse City on November 13-15, 2014. The conference provided Haley with opportunities to further her leadership skills, professional development, and acquire new resources. Haley was elected Vice- President of the Future Professionals division of MAHPERD. Congratulations Haley! Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity is a national professional fraternity for persons engaged in or pursuing careers in physical education, health, recreation, dance, human performance, exercise science, sports medicine and sports management. Students involved and newly added positions: Mallory Wooden (Vice President) Lexi Lewandowski (Secretary/Historian) Marc Miles (Treasurer) Hayden Craig (Merchandise/Advertising) Lisa Lemm Ray Williams In her Health Methods class with Professor Craven, Becca Napoli, was to prepare a lesson that discussed the short and long term effects of smoking. Becca was transformed by her hockey peer and makeup artist, Jackie Lough, to show the aging which would occur after smoking for 20-30 years. After the transformation was finished she used her selfie as a creative anticipatory to hook the interest of her students.
