1 Jericho Elementary School Action Plan 2013 to 2015 Summary of Previous Action Plan: The action plan was completed in December This plan focused on reading, mathematics, school climate and 21st century skills. Our actions steps were completed in all areas and students have made progress in these areas as well. In reading, we have the following in place: Common Expectations Use of Fountas and Pinnell Continuum of Literacy Learning for instruction Second session of reading instruction for students reading below grade level Participation in lesson study Monitoring students reading below grade level with DRA progress monitoring assessments and 3 minute reading assessments
2 NECAP Scores In Reading: : 87% of our third grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in reading. 86% of our fourth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in reading. 59% of our fifth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in reading : 70% of our third grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in reading. 77% of our fourth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in reading. 92% of our fifth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in reading. In mathematics, we have the following in place: Mathematics is taught daily for 1 hour Mathematics intervention is daily for 30 minutes Second session of math instruction occurs during intervention so students do not miss main lesson Teachers have implemented CESU pacing calendar to ensure all students complete the yearlong program Fall intervention small group instruction for grades 3 and 4 before NECAP assessments NECAP Scores in Mathematics: : 84% of our third grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in mathematics. 84% of our fourth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in mathematics. 64% of our fifth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in mathematics : 78% of our third grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in mathematics. 79% of our fourth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in mathematics. 81% of our fifth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction in mathematics.
3 In school climate, we have the following in place: School wide discipline plan based on PBIS and Responsive Classroom strategies Supports in place for Tier II and Tier III students Yearly school climate survey for parents Monthly parent meetings with the principal School behavior online data system PBIS leadership team that meets weekly Second Step curriculum lessons in empathy and learning skills In the area of wellness, we have the following in place: Wellness Committee Farm to School Parent Support Group
4 SWIS Data: As a part of our school wide discipline system we collect data regarding all major behavior incidents and all minor behavior incidents that require support from the principal or the guidance counselor School Population: School Population: All Referrals per 100 students All Major Referrals All Minor Referrals Each year we survey the parents about our school climate. We ask questions about students safety, academic progress and communication Parents indicated at least 80% satisfaction in 15/18 areas. Two areas of concern were communication about academic progress from teachers and the quality and cost of school lunches Parents continued to indicate at least 80% satisfaction in 15/18 areas. Two areas of concern were the quality of school lunches and the school wide discipline program. In addition, we surveyed our students in the spring of In 12/12 areas students were 95% positive about their learning and their safety and well being at JES.
5 In 21st century skills, we have the following in place: Hardware in place to meet the needs of our learners: Ipad lab, stationary lab, netbooks in grades 3 and 4, desktops in grades K 2 All staff and students are now using Google for documents and Professional development is ongoing during inservice and during school hours with our technology integration specialist Students are using Fastt Math to improve computational fluency School Technology Committee District Technology Plan
6 Action Plan Goals for Mathematics Goal Current Data: In the fall of 2012, students in grades three, four and five took part in NECAP assessments. Students were assessed on the skills taught in the previous school year (second, third and fourth grade skills). Grade 3 students: 78% were proficient or proficient with distinction Grade 4 students: 79% were proficient or proficient with distinction Grade 5 students: 81% were proficient or proficient with distinction Goal: All students at Jericho Elementary school will meet Common Core content and Practice Standards. 85% of JES students will reach or exceed proficiency standards. Specific: Students will demonstrate understanding of: Counting and Cardinality Operations and Algebraic Thinking Measurement and Data Geometry Students will demonstrate the following practice standards: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure
7 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Mathematics Goal (cont.) Measurable: SBAC: In the spring of 2015, students will participate in SBAC assessment for the first time. This assessment will reflect the Common Core Standards and provide a baseline for continued work in mathematics instruction and learning. NECAP: In the fall of 2014, students will again participate in the NECAP assessments. This data will be used to assess the effectiveness of our action steps from the school year. Our targets for all grades is 85% of our students proficient or proficient with distinction. Relevant: The state of Vermont has adopted the Common Core Standards and CESU is in the process of aligning the district curriculum to these standards. Timeline: 2013 to 2015 Action Steps: Mathematics Coaching position Data Teams at each grade level meeting every five weeks Lesson study in vertical teams meeting 3 times a year Math professional development monthly Classroom coaching Review and analyze assessment data yearly
8 Literacy Goal Current Data 2012: Reading: Grade 3 students: 70 % were proficient or proficient with distinction Grade 4 students: 77% were proficient or proficient with distinction Grade 5 students: 92% of our fifth grade students were proficient or proficient with distinction Writing: Grade 5 students: 48% were proficient or proficient with distinction Goal: All students at Jericho Elementary School will meet Common Core English Language Arts Standards. 85% of JES students will meet or exceed proficiency standards in reading and writing. Specific: Students will demonstrate understanding of the following Common Core standards: Reading literature Reading informational text Foundational skills Writing Speaking and listening Language
9 Literacy Goal (cont.) Measurable: SBAC: In the spring of 2015, students will participate in SBAC assessment for the first time. This assessment will reflect the Common Core Standards and provide a baseline for continued work in mathematics instruction and learning. NECAP: In the fall of 2014, students will again participate in the NECAP assessments. This data will be used to assess the effectiveness of our action steps from the school year. Our targets for all grades in reading is 85% proficient or proficient with distinction. Our target for our grade 5 students in writing is 75% proficient or proficient with distinction. Relevant: The state of Vermont has adopted the Common Core English Language Arts Standards and CESU is in the process of aligning the district communications curriculum to these standards. Timeline: Action Steps: Pilot Lucy Calkins K 4 Units of study in Writing in school year. Increase non fiction classroom libraries in grades K 4 Implement revised communications curriculum in reading, and writing Professional development in Common Core reading and writing standards Lesson Study in writing
10 School Climate Goals Current Data: Areas of concern: The quality of school lunches was a concern in school climate survey in the spring of 2011 and the spring of 2012 School wide discipline: In our school climate survey, parents indicated concern with the effectiveness of our school wide discipline plan. In addition our staff survey continues to express concerns about our school wide plan. Goal: Students at JES will follow the school rules, show empathy towards others and use academic skills for school success. Minor and major referrals as documented by SWIS data will decrease by 10%. 85% of JES parents will participate in fall parent/teacher conferences. Specific: Students at JES will follow the following school rules: Respect Self Respect Others Respect Property Enjoy Learning Together In addition, students will have effective school skills and show empathy towards others. Measurable: Student behavior will be measured by SWIS data. In our SWIS data all major behavioral errors are recorded and all minor behavioral errors that require support from the guidance counselor or the principal are recorded. JES behavior data will continue to decrease in number of office referrals.
11 School Climate Goals (cont.) Relevant: PBIS is a research based program that provides behaviors supports for all students. This program is endorsed and supported by the Vermont State Department of Education. Responsive Classroom strategies are effective in support a positive school climate. Timeline: Action Steps: School wide discipline plan implemented and revised yearly Parent Meeting to explain school wide system yearly Parent newsletter to celebrate academic and communities successes SWIS data reviewed and analyzed monthly Behavior Indicator screening reviewed 4 times a year Second Step skills instruction during guidance classes each fall Second Step skills instruction in empathy Second Step skills instruction in learning skills Responsive Classroom training

Goal: Jericho Elementary School students will have access on a daily basis to a quality lunch that meets the federal guidelines and incorporates local foods into the menu on a regular basis. Specific: Meals will include the requirements for Choose My Plate food groups. groups/ In addition, Jericho Elementary School will join the district in Farm to School grant if awarded to the district. Measurable: Parent satisfaction will increase on our school climate survey. Student survey will show increased participation in eating healthy and local foods. Relevant: The new federal guidelines support this work as well as many of our JES families. Timeline:

14 21st Century Skills Goal Current Data: Currently, all students have access to technology on a daily basis. The range of use begins with using devices as a practice tool and extends in some cases to sharing and collaborating beyond our school walls. We continue to lag behind in our replacement of hardware as prescribed by the CESU district plan. Goal: JES teachers and students will learn about and use 21st Century Learning technology opportunities in all content areas that include creative projects and collaboration with other students within our district and around the world. 85% of JES students will meet or exceed the performance standards for the required integrated technology units. Specific: JES will follow the CESU district Technology plan and the VCAT integrated technology units in order to meet this goal. Relevant: The CESU District plan is a requirement for all schools in our district in order to ensure our students have the 21st century skills needed to be successful in college and in careers. Timeline: Action Steps: PD for with the theme Collaboration and Sharing in and outside the Classroom Maintain and improve hardware using CESU technology plan Train teachers to teach keyboarding skills K 4 Technology Team meets monthly
