Applied Biosystems Real-Time System Computer Setup Guide

Unpack the computer boxes and set the proper voltage. 1. Unpack the computer boxes and place the monitor, computer, keyboard, and mouse on the bench as shown below. Do not connect any components yet. Also, do not connect the USB cable to the instrument or computer at this time. Doing so may result in installation of incorrect drivers. Note: The photos and graphic depictions in this Guide are general and are intended to guide you through the setup process. The photos and graphics might vary slightly depending upon your order. Also, the instrument shown here is for placement purposes only. Please see your Applied Biosystems installation guides for information on unpacking your instrument. b. If your computer has a voltage selection switch, set the voltage according to the table below. If your computer does not have a voltage selection switch, it contains an auto-sensing voltage selector and automatically detects the correct operating voltage. Country Voltage US/Japan 115 Europe/Australia 230 Always check the voltage configuration at the rear of the computer to ensure that it matches the site voltage. Failure to properly set the voltage switch can cause damage to the computer. c. If inside the US: The instrument will include 3 universal voltage kits (PN 603615) pictured below. Use a US power cord, from one of these 3 boxes, for the instrument. Discard the additional 2 voltage kits (PN 603615). Power cords for the computer and monitor are included in their respective Dell computer boxes. 2. Tower computers: Set voltage and connect the power cord. a. Examine the back of the computer tower and locate the voltage selector switch. d. If outside the US: The instrument will include 3 universal voltage kits (PN 603615). Use power cords from these voltage kits for the computer, monitor, and instrument. Do not use the US power cords that are in the Dell computer boxes. Discard the US power cords that are in the universal voltage kits. 3. Laptop computers: Connect the power cord (laptop computers contain an auto-sensing voltage detector that automatically detects the correct operating voltage). However, you must attach the correct power cord between the brick and the outlet. Voltage Selector Switch a. Inside the US: Use the power cord kit that is shipped inside the computer box (not the international power cord kit that is in the packing kit). b. Outside the US: Use the international power cord kit (PN 4346883) that is in the packing kit (not the one that is inside the computer box). Page 2

4. Connect the DVI connector to the tower computer. Tower Model GX270 DVI Connector If two computer-to-monitor cables are provided, connect the cable with the DVI connector to the connector on the graphics card. Mouse Power 2. Power on the computer. The power button on a computer tower is shown below. The power button on a laptop computer is above the keyboard (in the center). Model GX280 If two computer-to-monitor cables are provided, connect the cable with the DVI connector to the connector on the graphics card. 3. Power on the tower computer monitor. a Connect the components and power on the computer. 1. Connect the mouse, monitor, and keyboard as instructed by the Dell manufacturing instructions and shown below. Power button Page 3

Set the display preferences. 1. The following image appears on your screen. 5. Select the Appearance tab then specify your appearance scheme as shown below. 2. Login with Windows Administrator privileges (see your system administrator for more information). 3. Select Start > Control Panel to see the following screen, then select Switch to Classic View. 6. Select the Screen Saver tab then set the screen saver option to None. Make sure your computer does not go into screen saver mode. Doing so, may interfere with data collection. 4. Select Display. Classic View Option 7. Select the Settings tab then specify your settings as shown below. Note: Some laptop models have a maximum resolution setting of 1024 by 768 pixels. Page 4

8. If the computer displays a Flat Panel Warning dialog box, click OK. 9. In the Display Properties dialog box, click OK to exit the dialog box. When the following message is displayed click Yes to accept the settings. 10. Return to the Control Panel then select Power Options. Modify the power options and proceed with system installation. 1. Modify the Power Options properties as shown below. Also, do not set the system to hibernate at any time. Doing so, may interfere with data collection. Note: The picture below depicts battery options from a laptop computer. This picture may be different for tower computers. 2. Check your operating system. If you are running Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) Operating System, you must disable the Windows embedded firewall. This firewall may interfere with data collection. a. Select Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall. b. At the Windows Firewall dialog box, select OFF, then click OK. c. Select Start > Control Panel > Windows Security Center. d. Verify that in the Security Essentials panel, Firewall displays OFF. 3. Connect your computer to the network. For help in connecting your computer to the network, see your system administrator. IMPORTANT! Ensure that you are not connecting to a wireless network. Use of a wireless network can interfere with data collection and may result in data loss. 4. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader (free shareware) from www.adobe.com. Note that you must download Adobe Acrobat Reader to view document links referenced in the Real-Time System Setup wizard and the Sequence Detection Systems Online Help. 5. After the computer is set up, proceed with the installation by using either: The Real-Time System Setup wizard provided on the Software CD (which will start automatically after a slight delay when you insert the CD in to the CD drive of the computer), or The Applied Biosystems installation and maintenance guides that accompanied your system.
