4 About NEC USB Drivers The NEC USB driver software contains the files that assist with the bi-directional flow of data between the NEC Wireless Phone and your computer when it is connected to the Internet via the NEC approved USB cable. System Requirements The hardware and software requirements below describe the system requirements for installing the NEC USB driver software on a personal computer or laptop. Hardware Requirements Processor: 133 Mhz (minimum) or higher RAM: 32 MB for Windows XP Drives: Hard disk with 30 MB available Supported Connections: USB Software Requirements Microsoft Window XP NEC USB driver software WinZip if installing USB drivers from website 4

5 Understanding this Guide This section provides the information to: Make a folder on the C:\ drive called NECTools. Locate the USB driver software. Copy the required USB driver software for Windows XP. Connect the USB cable and NEC Wireless Phone to the computer. Install the NEC USB driver software. Contact regarding technical support and assistance. Uninstall the NEC USB driver software. Creating a NECTools Folder You must create a new folder for your USB Drivers prior to the installation process. In addition, NEC recommends that you name this folder "NECTools" for the sake of consistency, as this folder is specifically referenced within the installation instructions. (Please refer to page 7 for information about using the NECTools folder.) To create a new folder: 1. Create a folder on the C:\ drive called NECTools. Note: The NEC USB driver software will be installed to the NECTools folder. 5

6 Locating and Copying USB Driver Software Locating the USB Driver Software 1. Access the Internet from your computer and go to 2. Select the 232 wireless phone. 3. Select 232E Home>>. 4. Select the Toolbox tab, located along the bottom of the screen. 5. Select Sync Software. Copying USB Driver Software If you have not created the NECTools folder on the C:\ drive as instructed on page 3, do so now. To copy the necessary software files from the NEC website requires the assistance of WinZip software. You can obtain WinZip from the website: To copy the USB driver software from the NEC website to NECTools folder: 1. Click Install USB Drivers. The File Download dialog box displays: 6

7 2. Click Save. The Save As dialog box displays. 3. Select NECTools folder to display in the Save in: field. 4. Click Save. The zip file is saved to the NECTools folder. 7

8 5. Close the Internet window. 6. Open Windows Explorer or My Computer. 7. Open the NECTools folder. 8. Double-click NEC_1312.zip icon. The WinZip window displays with a list of files. 9. Extract the files to the NECTools folder. The files are saved to 3 folders within the NEC_1312 folder of NECTools. 10. NOTE: Check that the NEC Wireless Phone s battery level icon in the status bar of the Idle screen shows to be fully charged. The USB cable does not charge the phone s battery. 8

9 Setting Up the USB Driver Software DO NOT CONNECT HHP to the USB cable at this time. If you connect the USB to the HHP before the drivers are installed the Microsoft Wizard will start the installation procedure. If this occurs, cancel the operation and disconnect the USB cable. Although this installation method will work, NEC America discourages this method since it requires more steps on the part of the user. 1. Go to c:\nectools\baremodem. 2. Double click the Setup.exe icon. The Welcome screen displays: 3. Click Next button to continue to the next wizard screen. 9

10 4. Click Continue Anyway. 10

11 5. Click Finish. 6. Power on your HHP (if not already on). Connecting the USB Cable 1. Find the location of the USB port on your computer. 2. Insert the computer end of the USB cable into the computer s USB port. 3. Gently squeeze the release clips on each side of the USB plug and insert the plug into the adapter port of the NEC Wireless Phone. Be sure that the rectangular opening on the connector is lined up with the rectangular opening in the phone. The plug will slide easily into the opening. DO NOT FORCE THE PLUG! 11

12 Installing the USB Driver Software You will see Found New Hardware Wizard popup on the PC indicating new hardware has been found. Make sure you select Install the software automatically. 4. Click Next. 12

14 5. Select Continue Anyway. 14

15 6. Click Finish. Uninstalling the USB Driver Software To uninstall the NEC USB driver software from your computer: (From the Start menu): 1. Select Start>Settings>Control Panel. 2. Select Add/Remove Programs. 3. Select Change or Remove Programs. 4. Select Remove. 5. Click OK. 15

16 NOTE: If you uninstall the NEC USB drivers using any other method and decide to re-install the driver software at a later time, you will encounter installation problems. Therefore, be sure to follow the instructions above to uninstall the NEC USB driver software.
