JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE M. Haywood SP 11 RCT 291 REALTIME SPEEDBUILDING I 5 cr. (0-10) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will continue with instruction in writing the spoken word with punctuation by means of a conflict-free realtime theory and principles as approved by NCRA to provide instantaneous translation. Dictation of Q & A will include medical, technical, current events, jury charge and literary materials for building vocabulary and language skills. The student will receive instruction on using a computer-aided (realtime) theory system and teacher interaction. The student will be able to take dictation at 160 words per minute, transcribed with 95 percent accuracy by the end of this term. Students studying Captioning/CART must pass one (1) literary speed test with 96 percent accuracy. PREREQUISITES: RCT 280, RCT 281 or Consent of Instructor COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student can: 1. Write a conflict-free shorthand system. 2. Write and transcribe dictation of new, unfamiliar material at 160 wpm with 95% accuracy. 3. Write technical, Q & A, medical, current events, jury charge and literary materials on the shorthand machine using a conflict-free shorthand system. 4. Read aloud from shorthand notes, quickly locating portions to be read, maintaining composure while reading, reading distinctly and with authority to the satisfaction of the instructor. 5. Demonstrate knowledge of the English skills required in transcribing machine shorthand notes by punctuating technical, medical and regular dictation correctly; by correctly spelling and applying correct word usage and by proofreading materials carefully and correcting errors according to NCRA guidelines. COURSE OUTLINE: I. Realtime Writing A. Writing the spoken word with punctuation by means of a realtime translation theory. B. Speed and accuracy development.
2 C. Live practice dictation. II. Readback A. Readback and analysis of shorthand notes. B. Speed and accuracy development. III. Transcription A. Transcribe at least one 5-minute, 2-voice testimony tests with a minimum of 95% accuracy dictated at speeds of 120, 140 and 160 wpm. B. Transcribe at least one 5-minute jury charge tests with a minimum of 95% accuracy dictated at speeds of 120, 140 and 160 wpm. C. Transcribe at least one 5-minute literary test with a minimum of 95% accuracy dictated at speeds of 100, 120 and 140 wpm. COURSE CALENDAR: Each lesson is to be completed as follows: 1. Write lesson from book into Case Catalyst and/or Eclipse software. 2. Record percentage of untranslates. Must be under 5% for Judicial students. 3. Complete lesson audio with 95% accuracy. 4. Complete one supplemental speed tape for each lesson. A grade of 0 will be assigned for that test/assignment. 2. The grade of 0 will be averaged in with the other grades for that course. Testing Procedures: 1. All tests must be transcribed in class with the supervision of an instructor. 2. All notes must be attached to any test turned in or the student will receive a failing grade for that test. 3. Students will have one hour of transcription time per test. Starting and ending transcription times must be noted on test. 4. Any student caught cheating on a test will receive a failing grade for that test.
4 5. Testing at incremental speeds on unfamiliar material will be given. The same test shall not be dictated more than once every six (6) months to the same student. 6. Course exit speed tests must be transcribed, monitored, and timed with an institutionally approved supervisor, all copies (hard disk, RAM, floppy diskettes, etc.) of the tests shall be deleted immediately in order to maintain test integrity. 7. Performance speed tests will be graded using the NCRA RPR guide, What is an Error? Attendance Policy. To successfully complete this course, regular attendance is required. You will be responsible for all materials covered or assigned in class or on the syllabus. It is the student s responsibility to get any missed assignments from their fellow classmates or the instructor. Class begins at the scheduled time, not whenever the student arrives. Please make every effort to be in class on time. Classes end at a scheduled time, not whenever you choose to leave. Do not pack up early unless given specific permission from instructor. Every minute counts in this course. Excessive tardiness will not be tolerated. A student will be allowed to enter the classroom late three times (provided there is not ongoing dictation). After the third time, do not enter the classroom late. Students absent for more than 20 class meetings will automatically have their final grade lowered by 10 points. Late Work/Make-up Policy. Each test missed becomes a zero. Assignments not completed by the due date become a zero. Make-up tests are given at the discretion of the instructor. It is the student s responsibility to get any notes missed and any assignments from fellow classmates or the instructor. It is also the student s responsibility to see the instructor regarding a possible make-up test. Written Work Policy. Any written assignment must be completed using a word processing software package. You will be penalized for incorrect spelling and improper grammar. Your answers should be in complete sentences and your thoughts should be organized. If the instructor believes you need assistance with writing assignments, you will be referred to the Student Success Center for assistance in completing written assignments. Withdrawal Policy. The instructor will not drop any student from this class during the semester. It is the student s responsibility to initiate the withdrawal proceedings. A grade of W will be given only when a student withdraws on or before midterm of the semester. The instructor will assign a grade of W after midterm only in extreme circumstances. Definition of extreme circumstances will be at the sole discretion of the instructor. An I grade will be given only when a student is unable to complete the course for some extraordinary reason that is satisfactory to the instructor. A grade of I will only be given when there is a reasonable possibility that a passing grade will result from a completion of the work.
5 Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If it is found that a student has been dishonest regarding academics, a zero will be given for said assignment, performance quiz, and spelling test. In addition, academic dishonesty may result in expulsion, suspension, probation, or reprimand by the vice-president for administration. Please refer to Article IV, p. 34; of John A. Logan College s Student rights and Responsibilities: A Student Code of Conduct publication. Student Success Center. Tutors may be obtained through the Student Success Center. Contact the staff in C219 if this service is desired. John A. English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit The Write Place in Room E109. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. METHOD OF EVALUATION: There will be performance and/or written tests covering each lesson. The final exam will be a performance test. Students are required to complete each lesson at 95% accuracy. Students are required to write each lesson into Eclipse. There will be reading and homework assignments (audio lessons) outside of class. Students are required to practice on the stenograph machine after class time at least 2 hours. Students will be notified beforehand of all exams and assignments. Exams and quizzes will consist of performance tests as well as written exams. Students cannot continue in the court reporting program sequence unless one speed test is passed at the required speed levels with a grade of C or higher.
Grading Criteria: The final grade received for the course will be determined based on the following points: Textbook and Audio Lessons 640 900-1000 = A Performance Speed Tests 360 800-899 = B Total Points 1000 700-799 = C 600-699 = D Performance Test Grading Criteria. Performance speed tests should be taken as follows: Q & A performance tests should be taken on Tuesday; Jury Charge performance tests should be taken on Wednesday; Literary performance tests should be taken on Thursday. Students must transcribe at least 2 speed tests each week or receive a zero for untranscribed tests. More than 2 performance tests may be transcribed for a grade. Students must pass 9 speed tests or pass the highest speed level in each category. Stenographic notes for all tests must be submitted to instructor, whether test was transcribed or not. Students will be required to complete the homework assignments, audio lessons and supplemental speed tapes each week. No credit will be given for lessons turned in late. However, students will not be allowed to sit for performance speed tests if more than two lessons behind.
