It offers a simple, fast access to the same environment that is available via the thin client terminals on campus. This document includes instructions on connecting to the service, as well as installing the Citrix receiver software, where this is required. Accessing the Citrix remote desktop service The Citrix remote desktop service is available online at: https://access.qmu.ac.uk NB We recommend using Internet Explorer v11, as other browsers may experience issues with logging onto the service. These issues are currently under investigation, and updated documentation will be provided soon. 2
If you see the <Install> button on screen then you do not have the latest version of the Citrix receiver installed. Citrix recommend that you update this. NB We recommend that you install the latest version, however if you click <Skip to log on> then you should be able to login with the older version from your previous install. You should be aware, however, that not all older versions are supported; if yours is not, then you should follow the instructions below. Installing the Citrix receiver (PC) Click on the following link (or copy and paste it into the address bar of your internet browser) to install the Citrix receiver: http://www.citrix.com/go/receiver.html NB Do not click the install button, as it takes you to the generic download page for Citrix applications. If you do this, you may end up downloading the wrong application in error. The link will redirect you to the Citrix receiver for the operating system that you are using. Click <Download receiver>. The Citrix license agreement screen will appear. Check the I agree to the terms of the Citrix license agreement box. Click <Continue>. You will then be presented with a pop-up box: Click <Run> to start the installation. 3
Click <Install>. The receiver will begin installing on your computer. Once the installation has completed, click <Finish>. Browse back to: https://access.qmu.ac.uk 4
Occasionally Citrix does not register that the receiver has been installed. If this happens, click <Install>. A second Internet Explorer tab will open. Close this tab, and you will see that the remote access page has changed. Click <Continue> and this will register the installation that you carried out earlier. This indicates that the website has acknowledged the change, and that you can now log on via the new receiver client. Enter your normal QMU username and password. Click <Log on>. You will now have the QM Desktop available. Click on <QM desktop>. Click <Open> This will start the login process. 5
NB You may experience a black screen. Do not panic occasionally the log on screen is not visible, but you are still being logged on. After approximately 30 seconds, your desktop should be visible. This indicates that you are now logged on to the QMU remote desktop service. Using the Citrix receiver on touch screen devices The new version of the Citrix receiver amends your desktop to permit easier access for touch screen devices. Icons are displayed as buttons, and the <Start> menu is located at the top of the screen: Your desktop may be displayed as shown here. You can switch back to normal mode by pressing the icon on the top right-hand corner: This switches the desktop to the normal view as shown on the next page: 6
Logging off from your session Once you have finished, please ensure that you log off from your session just as you would on campus. To do this, click on the <Start> button and select <Log off>. This will return you to the Citrix home page. 7
Go to the top-right hand corner and click on <Log off>. After logging off successfully, you will see the following message: 8
