The College Application Process: A Quick Review for Seniors and Parents Presented by the School Counseling Team

Senior Application Checklist 1) Complete your application online 2)Submit Request for Transcript to Include Class Rank form to the Student Services Office if you want your class rank on your transcript 3) Request transcripts to be submitted to the colleges/ universities electronically through Docufide at Parchment www.parchment.com 4) If a college requires official ACT/SAT scores, requests must be submitted to the colleges/universities through the testing agency's website www.actstudent.org www.collegeboard.com

Why did MHS Eliminate Class Rank on the Transcript? Many competitive high schools have eliminated class rank because they feel it penalizes many excellent students who are squeezed out of the top 10% of the class and then are overlooked by elite colleges. Some districts that eliminated class rank have found that more of their students were admitted to competitive and highly selective colleges.

Impact on College Admissions Class rank is only one element of college admissions and without it, the other elements increase in importance: *Rigor of courses taken *Strength of grades in relation to rigor *ACT *Activities *Recommendations *Essays According to the National Association of College Admission Counseling more than half of the high schools nationwide no longer report student ranking.

UW System Beginning September 1, all UW campuses will accept applications for the fall 2016 term. Since most institutions have application priority dates or deadlines after which applications may no longer be considered, it is generally to your advantage to apply as early as possible after September 1.

UW Online Process Apply Online at: https://apply.wisconsin.edu/ Submit a separate application to each UW School. Application fee is $44. You are able to pay online or you may send in a check separately to the campus. Personal statements/essays are very important!!!!

UW-Waukesha Apply to UW-Waukesha the same as any UW University. apply.wisconsin.edu Submit transcript through Docufide at Parchment. www.parchment.com ACT is required

Private & Out-of-state Schools All colleges and universities have an online application site. This is the preferred method. A Secondary School Report form may require additional information to be filled in by your School Counselor. There are also general online applications at: http://www.privatecollegezone.org for Wis. Private Schools Common Application website: www.commonapp.org

Deadlines Examples deadlines UW-Madison: First Notification Period: First Monday in Nov./ Official deadline first Monday in Feb. (check website) UW-Eau Claire: Dec. 1 st Marquette University : Dec. 1 st Lawrence University: Jan. 15 th Univ. MN-Twin Cities: Dec. 15 th UW-Whitewater: Priority Consideration Jan. 1 st Even if a school does not have an early deadline, it is to your advantage to apply early before they fill to capacity

Technical Colleges Apply online at: www.witechcolleges.org www.wctc.edu www.matc.edu Transcript requests go through Parchment directly. Start applying to WCTC or MATC October 1 st Other technical colleges have different enrollment dates.

Personal statements/essays Prompts will appear on the statement page and/or the campus-specific page of the online application depending on the campus. (UW Application) Take the time and effort to write a quality essay. (colleges want quality vs. quantity) Have someone edit your work, checking for spelling, grammar, etc.

SENIOR YEAR COUNTS!!! Changing to a less rigorous schedule can jeopardize your admissibility or offer of admission. Academic performance will be evaluated and declining grades may be cause for revoking admission.
