2 Today s Objective Students will learn how, where, and when to apply to colleges.

3 College Applications Most college applications are available online by August 1 of a student s Senior Year. Some are available July 1. College applications are done online at the college s website, usually found under admissions.

4 What Information is on a College Application? It depends on how selective the college is! State Universities: Name and Demographic Information Parents Information Residency Status Grades, ACT Scores, and Senior Year Schedule Major Application Fee

5 Selective College Application All the information asked from the state universities, PLUS *Personal Statement or Answers to Specific Questions (short statements) *Essay *Teacher and Counselor Letters of Recommendation *School Profile *Interview *Resume

6 Letters of Recommendation Ask from people who know you well and over a span of time Ask if somebody can give you a good letter of recommendation : Provide your letter writer with a resume Ask your letter writer if they have any questions or need more information about you Give your letter writer time to do a good letter! As a courtesy, letter writers should be given TWO weeks to do a letter for you. Pay attention to deadlines!

7 What About My Transcript and Test Scores? After a college application has been submitted, you must have your transcript and test scores sent in support of your application. Send your transcript by going to and setting up an account if you don t already have one. Send your ACT scores by going to and then to Send Test Scores. It will cost $12.00 for every score sent.

8 Do all Colleges Need My Transcript Now? No! Some colleges (KU and Pitt State to name two) are going to self reporting grades and test scores at the time of application. Access Student Vue under course history when doing your application so mistakes aren t made. Final transcript is sent to your school after graduation.

9 What is the Common Application? A common, standardized first year application form used by nearly 500 colleges nationwide. Students may fill out an application at Students are required to assign a counselor to their application as well as have 2 teacher letters of recommendation. If the schools you are applying to accept the Common Application, you will be able to fill out just one application which will be sent to all schools you wish.

10 When Should I Do My College Application? Check the university s website for admission deadlines. The most common deadline for admission for universities in the state of Kansas is November 1 if you want to be considered for scholarship money.

11 What Kind of Admission Should I Choose? Early Decision: You apply to a college early in your senior year. Colleges make their decision about your application early (usually in December). If chosen, you are legally bound to attend that college regardless of financial aid aware. Advantage: It lets selective colleges know of your interest and that you are serious about their school. Early Action: You apply to a college early in your senior year. Colleges make their decision about your application early (usually in December). You may choose to apply to other colleges and not make a decision until Spring. Advantage: More students get admitted in the early action period than during regular admission.

12 What Kind of Admission Should I Choose? Regular Admission: Meet the college s regular admission deadline. Students usually do not find out whether or not they are accepted until mid April. Rolling Admission: Students applications are decided upon as they are received and notification is made within a few weeks time. Once a university s freshmen spots have filled, students may be denied admission.
