2 Today s Objectives: Counselors: Review post high school options Provide information on the college search and application process Highlight the use of Naviance to assist your work Students: Identify post high school options to further investigate Utilize the Naviance college search program to identify colleges/post high school education plans

3 LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL The Options Immediate Employment Trade School / Apprenticeships 2 or 4 year College / University

4 IMMEDIATE EMPLOYMENT includes: Service Industry: entry level jobs such as cashiers, cleaners, and some sales positions Non Union Employment: May allow for less education; often lower paying Military Requires a high school diploma Requires the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test)

5 TRADE SCHOOLS: This type of training usually includes coursework along with hands on learning; you must pay for the educational experience. Cosmetology Culinary Arts Technology/CAD Transportation/Automotive APPRENTICESHIPS: Offer a high level of practical, hands on learning; some coursework and tests may be required. 6 Two Year Colleges COMMUNITY COLLEGES: ECC, WAUBONSEE CC, and KISHWAUKEE CC are examples Open Admissions Policy: Generally, all high school graduates are accepted, until classes are full. Some programs (i.e. nursing) will have more restricted admission requirements Offer a variety of programs Certificate Degrees, Associate Degrees, and Transfer Opportunities Apply online quick and easy! Placement tests in reading, math and English are required; ACT subscores may allow you to bypass these tests, check with each school for needed scores. Complete application by early second semester to have greater choice in programs, classes and times.

7 FOUR YEAR COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES With over 2800 four year schools, you have many options: Public Schools: These schools receive some support from the state, reducing tuition costs to their in state students. In Illinois, the state schools also FREEZE tuition costs for 4 years. Out of state costs vary by state; some allow opportunities to earn in state status. Private Schools: These schools often have some religious affiliation. Tuition will be higher, but scholarships and grants are available to students based on academic achievement and/or need. Tuition does not vary based on the state a student resides in.

8 WHAT DO COLLEGES LOOK FOR IN AN APPLICANT: COURSE RIGOR: The strength of your curriculum as reflected in your transcript COURSE GRADES: The grades you earned in your classes STANDARDIZED TEST SCORES: Your ACT/SAT SCORES EXTRA CURRICULARS: Athletics, Activities, Clubs, Community service, Part Time Jobs, etc CHARACTER: What choices have you made for yourself? What about your maturity, leadership, self confidence, concern for others, sense of humor? DIVERSITY what sets you apart (play the tuba?)

9 What part of the country? Small or large? Ask the Right Questions to Find Your Best Fit Urban, suburban, rural? Athletics and activities? Two year or four year? School with specific major or school with lots of variety? Cost? Diversity?

13 NCAA Athletes playing division I and Division II sports in college must: Earn a High School Diploma Complete the 16 NCAA core course requirements Be eligible: determined by core course GPA and ACT score Apply online at the eligibility center: ncaa.org Send your transcript to the eligibility center (must request through Naviance)

17 What to do next Narrow your college choices: 1 REACH School, 3 Target Schools, and 1 Safety School Meet with the college reps when they visit CHS Sign up on Naviance! Go on a college visit this summer Create a resume or list of activities/achievements for letters of rec or complete the senior questionnaire on Naviance Share handouts with parents use the checklist!
