Deciding on final list of colleges Getting the applications Completing the applications Procuring scholarship and financial aid information

Provide Support Provide Guidance Provide Assistance

An on-going sorting and selecting process for all of you. The best Final List must include a combination of: reach schools target schools likely admits financial safety

REACH dream schools where admission chances are either iffy or perhaps may be unattainable toss up schools that are a reach for anyone (usually admit between 7%-20%) TARGET Closely meet the expectations in the schools profile, but competition for spaces can tight.

LIKELY ADMIT Chances for admission are very strong A safety school is harder to call today! FINANCIAL SAFETY (typically a GA state university) A place that parents can afford if, financial package is weak at all other schools if, family financial situation changes: economy, unemployment.

It depends! Find a reasonable number. If you are happy with the schools where you stand the strongest chances of admission, then the final list can be a lower number

Application -on-line (preferred) or paper Essays (usually) Activities and honors information Arts Supplement (if applicable) Application fee (credit card, check or fee waiver request) Student Signature (electronic or handwritten) Parent Signature (usually only for Early Decision)

Official Transcript Official Test Score Report Teacher Letter of Recommendation (usually) Counselor Letter of Recommendation and/or Secondary School Report Form (usually) Interview (optional) Audition/Portfolio (if applicable)

Complete the Transcript Request Form List name of college AND the complete mailing address - Check type of application plan ANSWER all questions Incomplete forms will be returned to the student and not processed. Transcripts are processed by our Records Clerk then forwarded to the counselor for completion and mailed by our records clerk. Request forms are available online and in the guidance office. College Transcript Request Form requires two weeks to process and mail or pick up. All transcripts cost $3.00 each.

Last year over a thousand transcripts were requested for initial college applications Yearly approximately 15% of transcripts requested were for applications that were never submitted Don t request a transcript until the application is complete or close to completion. If things arrive at the college around the same time it is less likely parts will get lost.

Counselor Recommendations are not required by all colleges Seniors are encouraged to meet with their counselor to discuss content before recommendation is written. It is highly recommended that an appointment is scheduled two weeks prior to submitting the college transcript request form. Senior Autobiography (highly recommended) and Parent Questionnaire (optional) should be turned in before or at the meeting. The student is responsible to inform counselor of things he/she would like highlighted in the recommendation

Not all schools have an SSR( Secondary School Report) or a counselor signature page. Complete the student information part of the form (including senior year classes, if required) and waive your right to access of the recommendation. Attach the completed SSR or counselor signature page to the college transcript request form and submit it to Mrs. Fleming, Records Clerk.

Class Rank will be official September 5th New Seniors will be able to request a Johns Creek HS transcript September 15th

How many? 0,1,2 Who? The one(s) who knows you best as a learner in their class Best if junior year Okay to have one sophomore year Cannot use senior year if applying early Visual & Performing Arts are usually a supplemental recommendation.

Complete the Teacher Recommendation Request Summary unless the teacher provides you with his/her own summary form. This form clarifies to which school they are sending a recommendation, which type of form they should use and when it is due. Give the teacher all required forms and a stamped, addressed envelope for each recommendation. Do not put your return address. Some colleges require teacher recommendation(s) but may not provide a form.

Remember to complete the student information part of the form and waive your right to access the letter. If applying via the Common Application you only need to give the teacher a copy of the recommendation form and an envelope addressed to each school. Talk with teachers about the option of submitting forms on-line and whether they want a hard copy or soft copy. If teachers are ok with an , please do so. You can get your teacher s address from the syllabi or on the school s website.

Students must ask teachers at least 1 month (recommended) ahead of deadline Inform teachers of ACCURATE deadlines for each college/university Be clear with actual needs and do not ask 3 teachers for a recommendation if only 1 is required Many teachers only do a limited number ask early and follow up with a thank you letter to the teacher. Student should call the schools to confirm letter was received.

Core Beliefs Pre-Write Find Your Voice Almost Any Topic Can Work Best Essays are about something important to you. Be real. Be Honest. Be Likable, If so, you will be impressive. Think Metaphorically Humility is good. Your counselor or English teacher are happy to review essays

Families for whom the application fees are a hardship may be eligible for fee waivers. Students must be on free or reduced lunch. Students should talk with the counselor to discuss eligibility.

ACT/SAT and SAT Subject Test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. and In some cases it is advisable to send more than one test score. Some colleges, typically those with selective admissions, require that students submit scores from all tests taken. Check the college s website.

It is strongly encouraged that you request test scores ASAP. It can often take 3-6 weeks for scores to be received. Do not RUSH scores. If taking an ACT or SAT this fall, consider sending one score now if your current score falls within their published range. In some cases applications will not be considered complete until a score is received.

Civic Crown (SAT) or (ACT) Praetorian Guard (SAT) or 33-34(ACT) These scores must include the writing.

NOTE THE COLLEGE ADMISSION DATES

Early Action Deadline October 15. Transcript request must be made no later than October 1 st if applying Early Action. Early Action applicants will not receive a Counselor Recommendation (not required). Applying during this period is not a safety. If you do not have the average GPA or test scores for the class of 2014, JCHS Counselors recommend you apply regular admissions so a counselor and teacher recommendation can apply. Although you self report, you must submit an official transcript. If you were denied in Early Action you would have been denied in Regular Admission.

Date and time of a college s visit is listed on the school s website and in daily announcements. A weekly schedule is sent in the weekly PTSA blast. Must sign up in 48 hours advance in the guidance office. Must have the signature of the teacher whose class you are missing.

It is crucial students have an understanding of the type of documentation required and where it should be sent. In most cases documentation should be sent to the office that handles disability services NOT to admissions.

Some colleges may require specific types of testing for evaluation but all want it to be recent (w/in 3 years). Students must make arrangements with their Case Manager or Mrs. Nemetz, IST, for this information to be released, it will not automatically be sent.

Morehead-Cain Scholarship (One Student) University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill Jefferson Scholars- (One Student) University of Virginia Park Scholarship- (Two Students) North Carolina State University Emory Scholars (Four Students) Emory University Resume due September 10 to the guidance office. Domestic students - $70.00 International students - $120.00

Senior year courses and grades matter! Many schools defer decisions until the end of 7 th semester. All offers of admissions are conditional upon successful completion of coursework. Offers of admissions can be revoked for a decline in grades.
