Safety Information When installing and operating the 1-Port DS3 IMA module, follow the safety guidelines provided in the PacketStar PSAX Safety Guidelines, which accompanies this product, to help prevent serious personal injury and damage to the module. Please read all warnings and instructions supplied before beginning installation or configuration of this module. In addition to the general safety information provided, you should also refer to the text in the PacketStar PSAX installation guides for other important safety information and procedures. Hardware Specifications Supported The 1-Port DS3 IMA module provides the following hardware features: Front-End: DMA interface with one physical port Number of ports: one Port density: 28 virtual channels Connector type: two BNC connectors, one to receive data and one to transmit data Line rate: 44.736 Mbps Bandwidth: 1.544 to 44.736 Mbps Description of the Module Functional Description The 1-Port DS3 IMA (Inverse Multiplexing over ATM) module combines the features of the 1-Port Channelized DS3 Multiservice module (see the PacketStar PSAX 1-Port Channelized DS3 Multiservice Module User Guide) and the 6-Port DS1 IMA module (see the PacketStar PSAX 6-Port DS1 IMA Module User Guide). It allows you to configure up to 28 virtual T1 ports for native DS1 ATM services or for as many as 14 independent IMA groups. This gives you point-to-point bandwidth options between that of a single T1 line and that of a T3 line. Hardware Specifications Table 1. Indicates the size of the output buffer followed by the maximum number of 64-byte cells in the output buffer. This column relates only to the speed at which the module communicates within the chassis. A high-speed module will communicate at high speed (1.2 Gbps) in a chassis that has a high-speed bus (PSAX 4500 chassis). High-speed modules will communicate at 600 Mbps in any other chassis. Low-speed modules will always communicate at 600 Mbps in any chassis. Module Placement The 1-Port DS3 IMA module is installed in any PSAX chassis slot intended to contain an I/O or server module. If you are installing the module in a newly installed PSAX chassis, be sure to follow your facility site plan for placing this module in the correct location in the chassis. Installing the Module Read the PacketStar PSAX Safety Guidelines, which accompanies this product, before proceeding.! WARNING: Be sure to use the ejector handles during installation and removal of a PSAX module.! WARNING: Make sure the locking tab at the bottom of the module (looking at module in a vertical position) is UP before you insert it into the chassis. 1-Port DS3 IMA Module Description and Technical Specifications Page 3 of 8
! WARNING: When inserting modules into the chassis, slide them gently, not forcefully. Excessive force may cause the modules to be seated improperly in the chassis, and result in possible damage to the module or the chassis. Install or remove modules one at a time. Doing this aids in preventing the PSAX system from indicating any erroneous failure messages, and allows the PSAX system time to reinitialize and display the accurate configuration of the module that is inserted. Begin 1 Remove the module from its box and ESD protective bag only when you are ready to install it. Be sure to save the box and the ESD bag to ship the module in the future if needed. 2 Open the ejector handle at the top of the module faceplate, and slide the module into an available slot. Be sure to position the module with the ejector handle near the top edge of the chassis opening on the PSAX 1250, PSAX 2300, and PSAX 4500 chassis. Position the module horizontally in the PSAX 1000 chassis with the ejector handle to the left. 3 Press the ejector handle until it snaps firmly against the faceplate, and verify that the module is secure in its slot. 4 Insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab down into the locking tab slot (see Figure 2). Note: Engage the locking tab on modules in the PSAX 1000, PSAX 2300, or PSAX 4500 chassis. Use of the locking tab is not required for the PSAX 1250 chassis. 4 Figure 2. Locking Tab on the I/O Module Faceplate (Shown in a PSAX 4500 Chassis) 5 For new installations, run the cabling through a cable management system that provides the necessary connector/cable strain relief to prevent damage to the I/O module connectors. ! WARNING: To prevent any damage to the I/O module connectors, do not allow network cables to hang unaided from the connectors. Use standard cable installation procedures to run and secure the network cables through an appropriate cable management system before connecting the cables to the I/O modules. End Verifying the Initial Startup After you insert the 1-Port DS3 IMA module into the chassis, observe the LED status indicators as described in Table 3. If the status indicators do not appear to function properly, refer to Troubleshooting the Installation on page 7. Table 3. LED Indicators for the 1-Port DS3 IMA Module LED FAIL (red) Module Status ACTIVE (green) LOS [Loss of Signal] (yellow) Initial Power-On No Configured Ports One or More Configured Ports Lights briefly 1 Not lit Lights only when the module is not functioning Lights briefly 1 Not lit Lights only when the module is functioning properly No Cable on Port N/A N/A Cable on Port N/A N/A Lights briefly 2 N/A N/A Lights Does not light if signal is being received Lights if signal is missing 1 Note: After power is initially applied to the system and the system boot is complete, the FAIL and ACTIVE LEDs indicate whether the module has no configured ports (red), or one or more configured ports (green). 2 Note: After power is initially applied to the system and the system boot is complete, this loss of signal LED indicates whether the port has a cable connected to it. 1-Port DS3 IMA Module Description and Technical Specifications Page 5 of 8
Removing the Module Read the PacketStar PSAX Safety Guidelines, which accompanies this product, before proceeding.! WARNING: Be sure to use the ejector handles during installation and removal of a PSAX module. 1 Disconnect the cables from the module port (or ports). 2 Insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab up and out of the locking tab slot (see Figure 3). 4 Figure 3. Locking Tab on the Module Faceplate (Shown in a PSAX 4500 Chassis) 3 Pull backward on the ejector handle until the module is released from the backplane. 4 Remove the module from the chassis. 5 Put the module in its ESD bag, close the bag, and place the module in its original shipping box. 6 If another module is not being immediately inserted into the empty slot, insert a blank faceplate module into the slot to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) and maintain proper air flow inside the chassis.! CAUTION: Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all laws and regulations in your specific geographic region.
