1 TM ISDN BRI Dial Backup Module (DBM) Installation Instructions Document Number 9000-A2-GN19-30 Feature Number 9098-F1-870 February 1998 Before You Begin Make sure you have: Ordered ISDN service, and it is installed. A small, flat-head and a small, Phillips screwdriver. A small, flat-head screwdriver, if upgrading a 1-slot access unit. A Phillips-head screwdriver, if upgrading a multi-slot housed access unit. For the FrameSaver 9620, verify that the software revision is at least 02.xx.xx. For the FrameSaver 9120, verify that the software revision is , or greater. Refer to the 1-Slot Assembled Access Unit, Installation Instructions (Document No A2-GN10) if this is an initial installation and not a DBM upgrade. If installing the NAM/DBM in a 1-slot (standalone) housing, refer to the 1-Slot Assembled Access Unit, Installation Instructions. If installing the NAM/DBM in a FrameSaver 9000 Series Access Carrier, refer to the FrameSaver 9000 Series Access Carrier, Installation Instructions (Document No A2-GN1D). 2 Safety Instructions Please read the EMI warnings and Important Safety Instructions that come with this card. Before upgrading a NAM with the DBM feature, or replacing either, locate or record the access unit s configuration options, or transfer the configuration using the FTP (file transfer protocol) feature. This may be useful when setting up again, verifying operation, or troubleshooting.! HANDLING PRECAUTIONS FOR STATIC-SENSITIVE DEVICES This product is designed to protect sensitive components from damage due to electrostatic discharge (ESD) during normal operation. When performing installation procedures, however, take proper static control precautions to prevent damage to equipment. If you are not sure of the proper static control precautions, contact your nearest sales or service representative Removing the NAM from a 1-Slot Housing 1. Disconnect the power cord/transformer, first from the power outlet, then from the rear of the access unit. 2. Disconnect the other cables. 3. Open the 1-slot housing using a small flat-head screwdriver. Gently pry open the housing at each of the four connecting tab points. However, if the screwdriver is too big or you do not open carefully, you could cause damage to the housing

3 4. Remove the cover. 5. Lift the NAM and the integrated I/O card/ backplane (rear panel) from the base. NAM Integrated I/O Card/Backplane Base Removing the NAM from an Access Carrier 1. Unscrew the captive screws from the ejector latches on front of the carrier. 2. Press open the ejector latches to disengage the card. 3. Supporting the card by its edges, pull straight out until the card clears the carrier. Ejector Latches Front View

4 Removing a DBM from the NAM Follow this procedure if transferring a DBM to a replacement NAM. 1. Lay the NAM and DBM on an electrostatic discharge-protective work surface, component side up, with the card connectors on the left-hand side. 2. Remove the two screws and two washers that hold the DBM to the standoff posts and NAM, and set them aside. Screws/Washers Pins DBM Standoff Post Connectors Standoff Post Screws/Washers 3. Turn the NAM over and remove the screws and washers on the underside of the NAM, and set the standoff posts and screws aside. 4. Turn the NAM over again so the DBM is on top. 5. Work the DBM away from the NAM by very carefully and gently pulling and rocking the DBM connectors away from the NAM connectors. Work first from one side, then the other until the DBM is free. Be careful not to bend any pins. 6. Reinstall the DBM on a replacement NAM. 4

5 Installing a DBM on the NAM 1. Lay the NAM on an electrostatic discharge-protective work surface, component side up, with the card connectors on the left-hand side. 2. Remove the DBM, standoff posts, screws and washers from the shipping box. 3. Position a standoff post at one of the two holes in the NAM, put a screw through a washer, insert a screw from the underside of the NAM, and tighten the screw to hold the standoff post in place. 4. Hold the DBM, pin side down, so the two sets of pins are aligned with their respective connectors. Carefully match the pins to the holes of the two connectors. 6. Press the pins and connectors together until both pin sets are firmly seated. Be careful not to force or bend any pins. 7. Insert the remaining screws and washers into the standoff post holes on the DBM, and tighten. 5

6 Reinstalling the NAM in a 1-Slot Housing 1. Reinstall the NAM in its housing, snapping the cover and base together at each of the four connecting tab points. 2. Reconnect the COM port, DTE ports, and network cables (DDS for the 9620/9621, and T1 and DSX-1 for the 9120/9121). 3. Install the ISDN-U cable. Reinstalling the NAM in an Access Carrier 1. Align the replacement card with the upper and lower tracks of the slot. Slide forward until the NAM seats. Be careful not to force or bend any pins. 2. Close both the upper and lower ejector latches on the carrier to lock in place, then tighten the captive screws. 3. Install the ISDN-U cable. Installing the ISDN-U Cable 1. Insert the 8-pin connector on the ISDN-U cable into the BKP (backup) or DBM interface. (The Model 9620/9621 is labeled BKP, while the Model 9120/9121 is labeled DBM.) 2. Insert the other end of the cable into the ISDN service RJ49C jack. 3. Reconnect the power cord, first to the rear of the access unit, then to the power outlet. 6

8 Verification Checklist/Verifying Operation 1. Set the ISDN BRI DBM configuration options (Main Menu Configuration ISDN BRI DBM). Refer to Chapter 4, Setting Up, of the Technical Reference (Document No A2-GH30 or 9121-A2-GH30) for configuration and ISDN call assistance. 2. Go to the Health and Status screen to see the status of the DBM (Main Menu Status System and Test Status). If... Then... DBM Card Failed Health and Status message ISDN Network Failed Health and Status message DBM circuit card is not operational. Return the DBM to your sales representative. ISDN network has failed and the call cannot be completed at this time. Refer to Chapter 4, Displaying System Information, of the User s Guide (Document No A2-GB20 or 9121-A2-GB20) for additional status information. See the BKP (backup) and ALM (alarm) LEDs when verifying operation of the DBM. Refer to Chapter 5, Maintenance and Troubleshooting, of the User s Guide for more information about the LEDs. Label Indication Color What It Means OK ALM Power and Operational Status Operational Alarm ( Fail) Green ON Access unit has power and is operational. OFF Access unit is in a power-up self-test, or there is a failure. Blinking ON and OFF (Rate: 1 Hz) Software is being downloaded. Red ON Access unit has just been reset, or an error or fault has been detected. OFF No failures have been detected. TST Test Mode Yellow ON Loopback or test pattern in progress, initiated locally, remotely, or from the network. OFF No tests are active. 10

11 Label Indication Color What It Means BKP 1 Backup Yellow ON Access unit is in Backup mode; that is, the backup link has been established, and backup is in progress through the specified Alternate Destination Link. OFF Access unit is not in Backup mode; that is, unit is idle, or is originating or answering a backup call. Blinking ON and OFF (Rate: 1 Hz) Alternate Destination Link is being established, but no data has been passed. 1 The BKP LED indicates backup for an external backup device, as well as an ISDN BRI DBM.
