New Jersey City University Gilligan Student Union Center

The RBA Group worked with New Jersey City University in a major renovation of their Gilligan Student Union building. We were contracted to reassess, reevaluate, reprogram, and renovate the existing 100,000 SF student union building, to create a friendly, inviting, vibrant and exciting center for student life on campus. The goal of the project was to provide a student union building that truly responds to the needs of the users of the building, students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and guests. Key issues addressed by RBA architecture in the building revitalization were creating an identifiable entrance into the building, provide a more logical and appropriate layout of program and activity spaces in the building, the utilization of existing space more efficiently and effectively, and the update and upgrade of building finishes and building services, as well as the complete replacement of mechanical and electrical systems. Rooms have been reconfigured to increase the number of fume hoods and casework, create a central prep room for each department, research labs, lecture rooms, and faculty offices. Work includes fumehoods and associated MEP systems, casework for storage and student work stations, safety equipment, suspended ceilings and drywall soffits, direct and indirect lighting, resilient flooring, new air conditioning system and audio visual systems. Corridor walls have been provided with new window openings to allow visibility into the new state-of-art facilities. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Cook Douglass Recreation Center

A Study of the Recreation Center was conducted to determine the most efficient method for reconfiguring the facility to provide more program space within the existing footprint. The study revealed that racquetball courts were underutilized. Four of the racquetball courts were converted into an aerobic fitness center and a multipurpose room to accommodate yoga, group fitness, dance and meetings. Windows and storefront systems were added to provide transparency and natural light. Stand-alone HVAC systems were provided in the new spaces. The project was completed in two phases to allow for continued use while students were on campus. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Cook Douglass Recreation Center RBA Group Architecture, P.C.

Kean University Downs Hall Addition and Renovation

The RBA Group was selected to provide comprehensive architectural design and construction services for this addition. The addition increased the existing multipurpose room and lobby. The existing lobby was enlarged to act as a reception area for the multipurpose room. The existing lobby was enlarged to act as a reception area for the multipurpose room. The resulting design utilized a curtain wall system and brick veneer with colors matching the existing adjacent Campus Police Building, for a unified look. Significant challenges to this project included a tight schedule, reconfiguration of existing circulation patterns, pedestrian control, and phasing while maintaining activity in adjacent areas. The project was designed and constructed in eight months. Kean University, Downs Hall Addition and Renovation RBA Group Architecture, P.C.

The space on the first floor is used to host functions in the college s main downtown campus and is located adjacent to the existing kitchen and cafeteria. The space opens up into the existing cafeteria to allow for additional flexibility. The upper level houses the college s Center for Success which functions as a career service center and student counseling offices. The addition on this floor includes offices and a conference room. Passaic County Community College, Center for Success and Meeting Room RBA Group Architecture, P.C.

County College of Morris Academic Buildings Expansion

This expansion involved two independent additions above existing terraces. New columns were supported directly by the existing terrace structure to avoid disruption of the facilities below, which remained partially occupied during construction. Spaces housed in the facility include: cafeteria, student study rooms, classrooms, an animal care laboratory facility, soundproof music rooms, control room, stage lighting, art studios, and faculty offices. Due to the variety of uses, special attention was placed on the acoustics within and separating the various spaces. Special floor construction was used for the music rooms to ensure acoustic separation from the existing lecture halls below. The additions now provide a focal point within the four-building academic complex. County College of Morris, Academic Buildings Expansion RBA Group Architecture, P.C.

Raritan Valley Community College Cafeteria Renovation

RBA was awarded this project after submitting the winning concept design as part of the selection process. This project offered many exciting challenges as RBA dramatically changed the existing space from a dark and closed in area with dated features and fixtures into a new bright and airy gathering space for the students. Built in the 1970 s the building is of the Brutalists style and has many of the typical characteristics of that era including poor lighting, dark floor treatments, waffle slab ceilings, exposed mason block and faded fabric wall panels. The space now offers a new level of sophistication with predominate features including a sloped glass curtain wall, new 2nd floor mezzanine, and beam grid ceiling treatment thus effectively bringing the cafeteria into the 21st century with an abundance of daylighting complemented with style. Facility was designed to accomodate vocal & music performances inclusive of stage lighting. Raritan Valley Community College, Cafeteria Renovation RBA Group Architecture, P.C.

Ramapo College of New Jersey Mansion Rehabilitation and Renovation

before This 1887 building is characterized as Queen Anne style and houses the college s office of registrar, admissions, administration/finance, and the office of the president. The building also contains the boardroom and the York room a reception/ conference area. One of the challenges of this project was the repair and in some cases replacement of building elements damaged by the overgrowth of vegetation. RBA also designed a new ADA compliant entrance ramp system in which the new brick ramp structure was matched to the existing brick of the original building. Comprehensive services included programming, conceptual design, estimating, bid documents and construction administration services for alterations and rehabilitation of the roof, façade (including windows and doors) and a new central air conditioning system. after Ramapo College of New Jersey, Mansion Rehabilitation and Renovation RBA Group Architecture, P.C.
