Chpter 5 Configurtion of ISDN Protocols This chpter provides instructions for configuring the ISDN protocols in the SP201 for signling conversion. Use the sections tht reflect the softwre you re configuring. Before configuring the protocols for your SP201, e sure you hve completed ll the configurtion procedures in Chpter 2, Configurtion Overview. The following susections contin informtion on configuring ISDN protocols in the SP201: Section 5.1, ISDN in the SP201 Section 5.2, Commnds for Configuring ISDN Protocols Section 5.3, Configuring ISDN Signling Section 5.4, Configuring ISDN LAPD nd Cll Control Section 5.5, The ISDN Rte Converter

5-2 Chpter 5: Configurtion of ISDN Protocols 5.1 ISDN in the SP201 An integrted services digitl network (ISDN) provides high-speed end-toend digitl service over existing telecommunictions networks, including copper-wire telephone lines used in most homes. ISDN llows single highspeed interfce to provide severl services, such s telephone (voice), fx, computer (dt), nd video trnsmission. ISDN supports trnsmission t 64 kps on ech chnnel. The SP201 supports the following vrints of ISDN: Ntionl ISDN version 2 (NI2), used primrily in North Americ Europen Telecommunictions Stndrds Institute (ETSI) ISDN, used in most plces outside North Americ ETSI ISDN nd NI2 ISDN systems vry s follows: NI2 supports the T1 rte (1.544 Mps: 24 chnnels t 64 kps per chnnel). In NI2, timeslot 24 is used for the D-chnnel. ETSI supports the E1 rte (2.048 Mps: 31 chnnels t 64 kps per chnnel). In ETSI, timeslot 16 is used for the D-chnnel. The ISDN protocols implemented in the SP201 conform to the following stndrds: ETSI ISDN conforms to ETSI 300-102 nd to ITU-T Recommendtions Q.931 nd Q.921. NI2 ISDN conforms to BellCore TR-NWT-001268 nd TR-NWT-002343 nd to ITU-T Recommendtions Q.931 nd Q.921. Both vrints of ISDN used in the SP201 re configured in the sme mnner. Any differences occur in options for prmeters; ech vrint will present its own options. Where pproprite, steps in procedures will point out ny differences for the vrints. The ISDN protocol uses out-of-nd signling. Ech stndrd ISDN trunk hs one signling chnnel (D-chnnel); the trunk s remining chnnels re erer chnnels (B-chnnels). A T1 line hs 23 B-chnnels; n E1 line hs 30 B-chnnels. On T1 lines, timeslot 24 is usully the D-chnnel; on E1 lines, timeslot 16 must e the D-chnnel. The ISDN protocols supported in the SP201 use the ISDN Primry Rte Interfce (PRI, for crrying dt nd voice over the B-chnnels). 1 1. Sometimes the SP201 softwre uses the term PRI to indicte ISDN prmeters.

Ech stndrd, stndlone ISDN trunk hs one signling chnnel (D-chnnel). However, in Ntionl ISDN you cn undle the SP201 s four

5-12 Chpter 5: Configurtion of ISDN Protocols ISDN trunks into one fcility. This llows the four trunks to hndle trffic s one entity; one D-chnnel crries the signling for ll ISDN trunks in the fcility. This llows the timeslots tht would normlly e D-chnnels on the other trunks to function s B-chnnels, incresing the trffic tht the trunks cn crry. In the SP201, you cn undle four ISDN trunks into fcility, freeing up three D-chnnels to function s B-chnnels. An dditionl enefit is tht you cn set ckup D-chnnel for fcility so tht, if the ctive D-chnnel goes out of service, signling is trnsferred to the ckup D-chnnel. (On stndrd, stndlone ISDN trunks, there is no ckup D-chnnel.) A fcility s ckup D-chnnel is lwys redy to ssume signling responsiilities if the ctive D-chnnel goes out of service. The ckup D-chnnel does not crry trffic of ny kind while the ctive D-chnnel is in service, so tht the ckup D-chnnel will not hve to wit for other trffic to disperse efore it ssumes the signling function. Note: All trunks in fcility must connect to the sme remote device, nd the remote device must hve the trunks configured s fcility, s well. 5.3.2.1 The config dchns Commnd for ISDN Fcilities You cn use the config dchns commnd to configure signling chnnels (D-chnnels) for fcility of ISDN trunks. Follow the procedure elow to configure D-chnnel for Ntionl ISDN fcility on the SP201. Note: To configure stndrd, non-undled ISDN trunks, see Section 5.3.1, Stndrd ISDN Signling. How to Use the config dchns Commnd for n ISDN Fcility Note: Only Ntionl ISDN supports fcilities. ETSI ISDN does not support fcilities. 1 At the user> prompt, type config dchns nd press Enter.

Configuring ISDN Signling 5-13 The following question ppers. Is this n NFAS interfce? (y or n) : <current=n> 2 Type y nd press Enter. Note: If you wish to configure stndrd ISDN trunk, see How to Use the config dchns Commnd for Stndrd Ntionl ISDN Trunk. The following question is displyed. ISDN Trunk Numer for NFAS Signling Enter vlue(5-8) or "exit" : 3 Type the numer of the ISDN trunk tht holds the signling timeslot, nd press Enter. Note: Trunk 5 should lwys e the trunk tht holds the signling timeslot. If you wish to choose otherwise, consult your Encore Networks representtive. Informtion similr to the following ppers.

5-14 Chpter 5: Configurtion of ISDN Protocols The following is the present Trunk configurtion. If chnge to the Timeslot or Interfce Type is desired Enter the Trunk numer you wish to modify or exit: ****************************************************************************** *************************** ISDN D-CHANNEL STATUS **************************** ****************************************************************************** Trunk FAS/ Signling Interfce Time # of D-Chnnel Trunk Type Protocol NFAS Type Type Slot Filures Sttus ****************************************************************************** 5 T1 NI2 ISDN NFAS Active D-chn Network 24 0000 Inctive 6 T1 NI2 ISDN NFAS 7 T1 NI2 ISDN NFAS 8 T1 NI2 ISDN NFAS ****************************************************************************** ISDN Trunk Numer Enter vlue([5-8]) or "exit" : 4 Do one of the following: If the ISDN trunk configurtion is pproprite for your network, type exit nd press Enter.
