1 2015 KAMAROI PARENT EDUCATION PROGRAM TERM 4 This term there are four evening sessions scheduled. The first is specifically for current Kamaroi Kindergarten parents with children moving to Class 1 in Those families are encouraged to book a baby- sitter as both parents will benefit from attending this session if at all possible. We have brought Ebba s Christmas workshop forward this year in response to feedback from previous years. Life can get very hectic at the end of term yet this session can help make the lead up to Christmas much less stressful and much more enriching. Lisa Devine s Grit and Grace session is always popular, and again due to feedback it is offered as an evening session to allow working parents to attend. Stay tuned for more information from Evan Sanders regarding an upcoming technology session. I m pleased to confirm that Kate Raffin is returning to continue her highly valuable Non- Violent Communication work this term. This is another session where having both parents attend is highly beneficial. The Parent Education program offers a chance for current and future parents, as well as members of the wider community, to learn more about Steiner Education and principles, child development and parenting; and often to deepen our awareness of ourselves and others. All sessions this term are offered FREE, thanks to the generous funding from the Parent Association. 2 The Transition from Kindergarten to Class 1 (Class Meeting for Kindergarten parents) Presented by Galit Fisher & Natalie Anderson MONDAY 26 TH OCTOBER 7:00PM 9:00PM This talk looks at the skills involved for a successful transition from Kindergarten and explores the four levels of sensory integration that are observed in the Class 1 readiness assessment. We look at the different systems involved, the tactile, auditory awareness, visual tracking and convergence, motor planning, hand and ear preference, balance, movement, body coordination and orientation, eye hand coordination, memory, primitive reflexes and the relevance these have for writing, drawing, attending, morning circle and to fully participate in the class 1 curriculum. Galit Fisher is the Magic of Movement teacher and facilitator and the social and emotional support teacher at Kamaroi and offers parents a greater understanding of what a child may experience in the transition to class 1; what Parents may see and experience; and what to expect socially and emotionally from the children in the first year of the primary years. Natalie Anderson is a therapist and mother at Kamaroi and shares her journey from kindergarten to the primary years and her holistic approach to transitions, sensory differences and self- regulation to gently support a child s development and growth towards self- sufficiency.

3 The Spirit of Christmas Preparing Your Child for Christmas Presented by Ebba Bodame THURS 12 TH NOVEMBER 7:00 9:00PM This two hour workshop will explore with parents the various images of Christmas, such as the nativity, Santa Claus, Christmas Eve, etc., and their deeper meaning and how this enables us to bring our children into the heart of Christmas. We have scheduled this session earlier than previous years to allow families to ease into the spirit of Christmas rather than feel like it s suddenly upon them! Topics covered will include: How to include the gift of summer into our Christmas celebration, Preparing our children for Christmas through Advent time, Ideas for activities, stories and gift making which may free parents and children from the commercial pressure of this season, Which gifts fulfill at this time of giving, Rituals for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day appropriate for young children. Participants will create a simple Christmas angel and will leave feeling renewed and inspired to share with their family the simple joys of this special time of year. Ebba Bodame is the Early Childhood Coordinator at Glenaeon and has over thirty years experience working with young children and parents.

4 Grit and Grace: Preparing our Children for the 21st Century Presented by Lisa Devine THURSDAY 19 TH NOVEMBER, 7:30-9:00PM The most powerful developmental and behavioural influence on a child is the fully present attention of an adult who loves them. This course marries the developmental insights of Steiner's educational method with those of modern psychology. We will look at the developmental tasks of each age/stage of childhood and how to create the environment that best fosters the healthy yet unique journey of each child in today's world. The course has been developed in response to parents questions and struggles in today's Steiner schools. The focus will be on the home but will also address the relationship between home and school. Examples of situations will be used to ground the insights and ideals of the spiritual science and psychology in daily life. Issues addressed will include boundaries, sibling rivalry, media influences, trauma, living between two households, and how parents nourish and strengthen themselves on this path of guiding a unique personality into our modern world with grit and grace. Lisa Devine trained as a youth worker in the early 1980s and worked in a range of youth at risk programs before moving into working in the disability field. She has a Masters in Psychology and has counselled young people and their families over many years. Lisa takes young people to Africa every two years in a leadership development program. Her connection to the work of Rudolf Steiner began in the 1990s when she trained as a Eurythmist and has deepened ever since. She has worked as a Chaplain/Counsellor in three Steiner schools in Melbourne and now is the Chaplain for Glenaeon and Central Coast Rudolf Steiner School. Currently she is developing and implementing social programs targeted at preventing and treating young people suffering from eating and self- harm issues. Lisa teaches Introduction to Anthroposophy, Cosmology and Human Communication courses at the Sydney Rudolf Steiner College.

Presented by Kate Raffin WEDNESDAY 25TH NOVEMBER, 7:00-9:00PM Please come and join Kate Raffin and other parents from the Kamaroi community for an evening of exploring how we can be the one person in the room who responds in a new and incredibly effective way when things get stuck. Those old dynamics that get caught in that well worn groove of communication lead to very little satisfaction for anyone. We will spend the time exploring and unlocking what gets stuck and how we can use some very simple tools to have our response be more true to what we really want to say or do AND shift the situation for everyone. Kate is a certified Nonviolent Communication trainer and mediator and loves working with groups and individuals to use our real life situations to explore our powerful choices to bring about more of what we want to see in the world.
