This technlgy allws yu t create virtual databases by directly attaching backup files t SQL Server withut requiring a restre peratin. Each virtual database is hsted by the SQL Server instance yu specify. All bjects and data in the virtual databases are accessible t SQL Server jbs and stred prcedures, T-SQL scripts, and ther third-party applicatins. The SQL VDB Engine, which cnsists f the Filter Driver and Filter Service, manages the virtual database and services the SQL Server I/O requests t the virtual data files. 10 Installatin and deplyment Deply an installatin f SQL Virtual Database t each SQL Server cmputer that hsts the databases yu want t virtualize. Install all f the prduct cmpnents n the same cmputer. Yu can deply SQL Virtual Database t a clustered SQL Server envirnment using Windws Server 2003, Windws Server 2008, r Windws Server T install SQL Virtual Database: 1. Review the prduct requirements. 2. Lg nt the target cmputer using an accunt with administratr privileges. 3. Dwnlad and install the SQL tlbx. 4. Frm the Tls available fr install list, select SQL Virtual Database. 5. Click Install. 6. Start the SQL VDB Cnsle. When yu start the Cnsle, the licensing cnsle displays. 7. Chse the apprpriate licensing ptin. Yu will need a prductin license fr each cmputer n which yu install SQL Virtual Database. Fr mre infrmatin, see prduct licensing. 11 SQL VDB cmpnents CLI Is the cmmand line interface. The SQL VDB CLI calls the Management Service t manage the creatin, mdificatin, and remval f yur virtual databases. Yu can call the CLI frm new r existing T-SQL scripts, such as yur SQL Server backup jbs. T access the SQL VDB CLI, start the Windws Cmmand Prmpt, and then enter sqlvdbcmd t see which ptins yu can use. Cnsle Is the user interface that allws yu t manage yur virtual databases and query any data r bject frm the virtual databases. Yu can als use the SQL VDB Cnsle t change yur prduct cnfiguratin and access nline Help. Filter Driver Is a cmpnent f the SQL VDB Engine that is attached t a specific drive n the target SQL Server cmputer. The driver handles the SQL Server I/O requests required t create the virtual database. T ptimize perfrmance, the driver finds and attaches t the first available drive each time it receives a request t create a virtual database. Engine Cnsists f the SQL VDB Filter Driver and the Filter Service. The engine cmpnents cmmunicate with SQL Server, and create and maintain yur virtual database. Filter Service Is a cmpnent f the SQL VDB Engine that is installed n the target SQL Server cmputer. The SQL VDB Filter Service uses the cnfigured Windws accunt r SQL Server lgin credentials t cmmunicate with SQL Server. This service als crdinates with the driver t retrieve data frm the specified backup files and then create data files fr yur virtual database. Yu can specify a different flder in which t stre the virtual data files. T ensure virtual databases can be used after a failver ccurs, deply SQL Virtual Database n each nde in the Windws cluster. Enable fault tlerance fr virtual database access Use this prcess t enable fault tlerance fr yur virtual databases. By default, high-level lgging is always enabled fr SQL Virtual Database activities and events. T access system diagnstics: 1. On the SQL Virtual Database Welcme windw, click Help & Mre. 2. Click System Diagnstics. T cllect the lgs: 1. Ensure the Enable Debug Mde ptin is selected. 2. Click the cllectin buttn. SQL VDB creates a zipped flder f the specified lg files and places this flder n the Windws desktp. By default, the zip flder is named IderaSQLvdbCllectinLgInstanceNameTimeStamp.zip. 3. the zipped lg flder t Idera Supprt. T cllect the lgs fr issues encuntered when installing SQL Virtual Database: 1. Start the Windws Cmmand Prmpt. 2. Navigate t the installer directry (by default, C:\Dcuments and Settings\User Name\My Dcuments). 3. Grm unused virtual data files Use the Settings windw t grm (delete) any unused virtual data files. T grm yur data files, click Clean Up. SQL Virtual Database autmatically detects and deletes any virtual data files that are nt being used r are nt needed t supprt yur existing virtual databases. By default, these virtual data files are lcated in the FilterMetaData flder under the Prgram Files directry (C:\Prgram Files\Idera\SQL virtual database).

Abut the SQL VDB trial license By default, SQL Virtual Database installs with a limited-time trial license key that is valid fr the cmputer n which yu have installed the tl. When yu decide t mve frm a trial implementatin f SQL virtual database t yur prductin envirnment, cntact and btain a license key frm Idera. Hw SQL VDB licensing wrks SQL Virtual Database checks fr a valid license each time yu start the tl. A valid license is a trial r prductin key that has been registered fr the cmputer n which yu have installed the SQL Virtual Database tl. If yur license expires, such as when the trial perid ends, the Cnsle functinality will be limited t remving previusly created virtual databases and managing yur prduct license. Yu can cntinue t access existing virtual databases using tls such as SQL Server Management Studi. If yur license is deactivated, yu will n lnger be able t use the tl. Yu can re-install the tl and reuse a previusly deactivated prductin key. Register yur sftware Use the Register Idera SQL virtual database windw t start the license activatin prcess and begin using this prduct. Once yur sftware is registered, yu have 14 days t cmplete the license activatin. Yu can cntinue using all the prduct features during that 2-week perid. After yur prduct registratin has expired, yu will n lnger be able t use the prduct. After the registratin perid expires, yu can still activate a valid prductin license nline r manually.

This ptin requires an active Internet cnnectin. Register Try Registers this prduct with Idera. This actin starts the license activatin prcess by sending yur license key and cmpany infrmatin t Idera. Runs the prduct in trial mde, allwing yu t cntinue evaluating this prduct. Chse hw t activate yur license Use the Activate Idera SQL virtual database windw t chse hw and when yu want t cmplete the activatin prcess. Activate yur license as sn as pssible after registering yur sftware. Once yur sftware is registered, yu have 14 days t cmplete the license activatin. After migrating this tl t anther cmputer, yu will be prmpted t cmplete the license activatin prcess fr the installatin n the new cmputer. T immediately deactivate the prduct license fr this tl, click Deactivate. TIP Deactivatin requires Internet access. If the cmputer des nt have Internet access r is therwise unavailable,cntact Idera Licensing t deactivate the license manually.

Yu can use this CLI actin t autmatically generate virtual data files fr specific backups n a rutine basis. Fr example, yu can schedule a SQL Server jb that searches fr new backup files and then generates the crrespnding virtual data. By building the virtual data befre attempting t attach the backup file, yu can decrease the time required t create the virtual database and get faster access t yur data and bjects. The larger the database is, the mre time yu can save by preparing yur backups. Fr mre infrmatin abut virtual data files, review hw SQL Virtual database wrks. Cnsider running this actin n backups fr missin-critical and sensitive databases, as well as databases that ften require bject recvery and data retrieval. Yu can specify any f the fllwing ptins: Individual backup files frm a single lcatin Striped back up files frm multiple lcatins Specific data sets cntained in the backup files Cnnectin credentials Passwrd used t decrypt an encrypted SQL Safe backup file Whether the SQL VDB CLI shuld retry this actin when a netwrk file errr ccurs T see a detailed descriptin f each ptin, enter sqlvdbcmd Map at the cmmand prmpt. When t use map generatin Yu shuld use the Map Generatin CLI actin whenever yu need t decrease the time required t create a virtual database. Yu can type the directry path fr the flder yu want t use r click the brwse buttn t navigate t the flder. Once yu have specified the apprpriate flder, click OK. Update SQL VDB jbs t use new CLI SQL VDB 2.0 and later includes a new cmmand line interface (CLI) that ffers new functins and replaces the previus Map Generatin utility. If yu are upgrading frm SQL VDB 1.x t SQL VDB 2.0 r later, yu must update any SQL jbs that use the previus SQLvdbCLI cmmands. 25 Create Virtual Databases Create virtual databases t access, cmpare, recver, and reprt n data frm previus backups f databases in yur envirnment. Fr example, yu can create multiple virtual databases, at different pints in time, frm backups f the same live database. This strategy allws yu t cmpare clumn values and schema bjects frm ne versin f the database t anther versin several days later withut restring the database. Yu can create a virtual database by either: Attaching a single full backup file Attaching multiple backup files, including transactin lg backups Virtual databases can be created thrugh the SQL VDB Cnsle r CLI. T access the SQL VDB CLI: T access the SQL VDB CLI, start the Windws Cmmand Prmpt, and then enter sqlvdbcmd t see which cmmands and ptins yu can use. Fr mre infrmatin abut the SQL virtual database cmpnents, see the prduct cmpnents. Abut virtual databases A virtual database (vdb) is a patent-pending sftware implementatin f a database that allws fr data strage and retrieval like a physical database. Because a virtual database acts like a physical database, yu can access any data r bject in the virtual database using T-SQL scripts, third-party applicatins, reprting tls, and database management tls such as Micrsft SQL Server Management Studi. Database management tls interface with and display the virtual database as a physical database. Each SQL Server instance can hst multiple virtual databases. What yu can d with a virtual database Any peratin that yu can perfrm n a physical database can be perfrmed n a virtual database. Likewise, applicatins that rely n getting infrmatin frm this database can cntinue using the virtual versin. Yu can use the built-in query tl t execute cmmands n bjects in this virtual database. Yu can als access this virtual database using Micrsft SQL Server tls, such as Management Studi, and ther third-party applicatins. Fr mre infrmatin, see ur tip and tricks. TIP Yu can mdify the data and bjects in the virtual database. Hwever, because the virtual database is based n archived data, yur changes will nt persist when yu recreate the same virtual database later. T preserve yur changes, back up the mdified virtual database and then create a new virtual database using thse backup files. Attach a single backup file Use the Attach Full Backup windw t easily create a virtual database frm a single full backup file. Yu can brwse fr instances running n the lcal cmputer. Virtual Database Name Type a unique name yu want t use fr yur new virtual database. This name will be displayed in the Cnsle and in ther database management tls, such as Micrsft SQL Server Management Studi. By default, SQL VDB stres the database files fr this new virtual database in the lcatin yu defined using the Settings windw. Attach multiple backup files The Attach Multiple Backups wizard lets yu build a live virtual database based n data frm specific backup files. With this wizard, yu will: Select the backup files yu want t include Select the date and time up t which yu want data Specify hw yu want the virtual database t display in the Cnsle and ther tls Fr mre infrmatin abut hw yu can use the virtual database, see ur tips and tricks. Select backup files Use the Backup Files tab t select which backup files yu want t use t create yur virtual database. TIP When yu select a backup file, SQL Virtual Database pens the file in shared read mde. When Micrsft SQL Server r Idera SQL Safe attempts t append (write data t) r delete this file, the backup peratin will fail because the file is lcked fr read. When the LSN range is ut f sequence, the affected files d nt cntain all f the lgged transactins required t create an accurate virtual database. If an LSN range is ut f sequence, such as a gap between ne file and the next, the affected files are displayed in range text. T reslve this issue, add mre backup files t fill the LSN gap. Als cnsider verifying the backup files t ensure a cmplete backup had been perfrmed. Fr mre infrmatin, see Micrsft SQL Server Bks Online. Actins and tasks Add a backup file t the list Click Add t select a backup file t use when creating this virtual database. T add a file, first type the path and filename in the prvided field, r brwse fr the files. Yu can als use wildcards t find flders r files that match a naming cnventin. If the selected backup file cntains data fr mre than ne database, yu will be prmpted t chse which data set yu want. If the selected backup file cntains encrypted data, yu will be prmpted t prvide the passwrd required t decrypt the file.
