2 COMMUNICATION WITH SCHOOL School Office The school office is open from 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 4pm on a Friday for enquiries either by , telephone or in person. Please remember Tutors and Teachers will not be available to speak with parents and carers during the school working day due to their teaching commitments. However the school office will ensure detailed messages are passed on and request that the member of staff responds to your enquiry. If you do wish to make contact with your child s Tutor or Subject Teachers we recommend you contact school and ask for an appointment to see the relevant member of staff. If you are unable to visit the school in person staff will always be willing to arrange a convenient time with you to speak on the telephone. Parent Information evenings & Parent Consultation evening During the academic year you will be invited to attend Parent Information evenings and Parent evenings. Parent information evenings are normally held towards the start of the school year during the first term and will provide you with information on the curriculum your son/ daughter will be following and important matters relevant to the year group. These take the form of presentations from senior staff and are not opportunities to meet all your son s/daughter s teachers. There is one Parent information evening for each year group. Parent Evenings will be held at different times in the school year with one for each year group. These offer you the opportunity to meet your son s/daughter s subject teacher and discuss the progress made in each subject they are studying. These evenings will appear in the school calendar and reminders will be sent out to all families at least one week in advance. 3 Safeguarding All visitors to school (this includes parents and carers) are required to report to the school office on arrival, however short you intend your visit to be. For example if you were coming in to collect your child for a medical appointment or drop off a forgotten item you are still required to report to the school office. You will be issued with a visitors ID badge. All visitors are required to sign out when they leave the school premises. ParentMail We use Parentmail services to stay in regular e mail contact with families. We will provide you with your own personal registration code and we strongly encourage all families to sign up. Sending information to you by e mail means we can advise parents of the latest school information and updates quickly and cost free, without the printing and paper costs as well as running the risk of the paper copy staying at the bottom of your child s school bag! There are 1400 students attending the Federation and with the average cost of a franked item of post costing 45p we make huge savings every time we can send an e mail rather than post a letter. Money that can be spent on resources to further support your child s education. Bulletin for Families A bulletin is published on a weekly basis to keep families up to date with the latest school information. There is a Student Services office and medical room at both schools. Student Services can be contacted between 8.30am and 4pm every day and are open to students at break, lunchtime and after school. Student Services provide the initial response to student welfare and first aid needs as well as the monitoring of student attendance and punctuality. Starting School 3
4 THE SCHOOL DAY We will be based at Parkside Community College from September 2015 and Parkside school is open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 4pm on a Friday. All students can use the school library from 8.00am and breakfast is also available from the school café from 8.00am each morning. The library is open until 5pm Monday to Thursday and 4pm on a Friday. Snacks are also available to purchase at the end of the school day. The school bus will collect students from Trumpington at 8.00am Monday-Friday and arrive at Parkside in time for registration. At the end of the school day the students will leave Parkside at 4.15pm Monday Thursday and return to Trumpington at approximately 4.45pm. On Friday the bus will depart from Parkside at 3.15pm and return to Trumpington at approximately 3.45pm. The precise arrangements regarding the pick-up & drop-off location in Trumpington will be issued after discussions with families before the end of the summer term. Students who require the free transport from Trumpington to and from Parkside each day will be required to attend an enrichment session Monday-Thursday until 4.00pm. These sessions will be free of charge and will be designed to provide individualized support in literacy and numeracy and/or offer extra-curricular activities in all subjects. Students may also attend homework club in the library during this time. Library staff and Teaching Assistants are available to provide support and the library has a suite of computers with internet access. Formal lessons for students in Years 7, 8 and 9 start at 8.30am each day and finish at 2.50pm. Students in Years also have extra lessons that finishes at 3.40pm or 4.30pm depending on the courses they are studying. A full programme of lunchtime and after-school clubs is available for all students from Year 7 to Year 11. These clubs are a great way to meet new friends, pick up a new interest or develop an existing one. There is a vast range of clubs on offer to cater for all tastes and interests so we will expect that all new students participate in at least one club. 4 Starting School

6 SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY Receiving a full-time education will give your child the best possible start in life. Attending school regularly and punctually is essential if students are to make the most of the opportunities available to them. We expect all students to attend school every day and to arrive on time. Good school attendance and punctuality is vital to student academic achievement and to ensure all students make the best of their talents and skills. Good attendance and punctuality also encourages students to value commitment, others and their time. 6th form providers, employers and other reference seekers value attendance and punctuality as indicators of reliability. Attendance and Punctuality is recognised as an aspect of achievement. Students will be rewarded for excellent and improving attendance and punctuality with tutor group prizes, individual student awards, as well as celebrating success during school assemblies throughout the academic year. Tutors monitor the attendance, punctuality and progress of all students. The majority of students have good attendance and punctuality. However, should your child s school attendance and/or punctuality become a cause for concern your child s Tutor will make a referral to the Attendance Officer and the Tutor will also request to meet with you and your child. Parents and Carers are legally required to ensure that their children regularly attend the school at which he/she is registered. Parents and Carers who fail to do this may be liable to prosecution and a fine of up to 2500 and/or three months in prison. We would also like to remind families that we strongly discourage parents and carers using term-time to book holidays and visits (please be aware there are 13 weeks of school holiday time in the year). Permission is only given in exceptional circumstances and if your child has an excellent school attendance record. 7 Go4schools We are currently using a web based reporting system called Go 4 Schools. The advantage of this is it will allow assessment information to become more accessible to parents in the future. The introduction of this system was in response to parental consultation. Parents and Carers with access will be able to log on to the Go 4 Schools website and view their children s past and most recent reports online and current progress. Using GO 4 Schools, you will be able to view your child s progress online and access the following information at any time: Real-time attainment information marks and target grades for all subjects throughout the year. Timetable Your child s daily and weekly timetable Attendance Shown from the start of the academic year Progress Checks Twice a year Full Report Full written report which are published annually Your child s page is constantly updated, providing you with the latest information. New customers will be asked to register and follow the online instructions to link their account to a chosen school. Once you are registered you can begin to order straight away. All of the Uniform and PE Kit products will be displayed with an indication if the product is compulsory or optional. 12 EDMODO - Information for Students Edmodo is a secure social networking style platform for schools. It enables your teachers to post homeworks and for you to communicate with them whenever you need to. It is very simple and looks a little like Facebook, so you should find it easy to use. How do I register? To register you need a Group Code from one of your teachers. You then go to pfa.edmodo.com, enter the group code, then use your network username as your Edmodo username. You can choose a password (but make sure it s one that you remember). You should make sure your first and surnames are correct also. How do I add other teachers classes? Once you have registered, to add other classes all you do is click on Join under the Groups section on the left hand side of the homepage, then add the Group Codes given to you by your other teachers. What can I use Edmodo for? You will use Edmodo in lots of different ways: Your teacher will post work onto Edmodo for you to do at home You will find class notes and other learning resources posted on there You can check on your grades for any work you do, and any comments You can communicate with your teacher, and also with the group Your teacher can communicate with you, and with your parents (see below) Can my family log on and see my Edmodo page? Yes and no. You have a unique Student Code (on the right hand side of your homepage) which enables your family to register with Edmodo as well. Once they have registered they can see the work you have been set and any grades and comments, as well as the teacher being able to contact them directly. This will enable them to better support you in your learning. Your families will be sent further information on how to register. What if I forget my password or username? 14 CASH FREE CATERING All catering purchases at Parkside and Coleridge are made using a Cash Free Smartcard (Student Card). This dramatically speeds up payment for food, reduces queuing, therefore increasing the time children have to enjoy their breaks. New students will be issued with a Student Card. The card can be used at both the Parkside and Coleridge sites. There is no cash taken in the cafés. Putting money on the card By far the best way to put money onto your child s account is by sending a cheque on a monthly or half termly basis. We would like you to assess how much your child is likely to spend during the first half of the autumn term on breakfast, break and lunch and send a cheque for this amount to the school. Please do not send in cheques for very small amounts. Cheques must be made payable to Cucina Restaurants Limited. Please write your child s name and tutor group on the back of cheques. Accounts may also be topped up with cash. Both Parkside and Coleridge have Value Load Terminals to enable your child to top up and check the current balance. These terminals accept all denominations from 5p coins to 20 notes. Free School Meals Children who are entitled to free school meals will be allowed a main course and dessert or drink. This entitlement is to be used at lunch time to ensure children are eating a healthy and substantial meal in the middle of the day. We will welcome your support in adopting this approach. Parents may wish to add to their child s Student Card should children wish to have an allowance to use for breakfast / break. What happens if a card is lost? If a card is lost, misplaced or stolen the cardholder will need to immediately report the loss to the school office. The card will then be disabled and a replacement card issued. 16 SIGN UP FOR FREE SCHOOL MEALS Did you know that just registering your child for Free School Meals means that the school gets extra money? Register now to make sure that we don t miss out. The Government is giving money to schools to help children from lower income families do their best. The funding is called Pupil Premium. For every child registered Parkside Federation Academies gets 600 this year. With this money we could provide further resources for all students. If you are registered for Free School Meals you could also apply for assistance with the cost of Music Tuition School Trips School Trips Abroad How does it work? 1. First check if you qualify - it is not just if you are unemployed, so please look at the list opposite. 2. Registering is really quick and easy - if you think you qualify contact Student Services who will help you register or alternatively log on to the Cambridgeshire County Website, details further down the page. 3. If you want your child to have a free, healthy meal at lunchtime that s great - they will get the free meal (saving you more than 350), extra benefits and the school gets 600 extra. 4. Applying for Free School Meals Online - Either at home or come to Student Services and we will help you apply online using a school computer. Applying for free school meals online is quick and easy, and no proof of entitlement is needed. On receipt of the online application, Cambridgeshire County Council will check for entitlement through a secure Electronic Checking System. All that is needed is the claimant s National Insurance number, their children s details and details of their children s schools. Starting School 17
18 BEHAVIOUR AND DISCIPLINE POLICY Introduction The Parkside Federation seeks to deliver an excellent education based on collaboration between students, their families and school staff. The Governing Body believes that in order for effective teaching and learning to be available to all, high standards of behaviour in all aspects of school life is essential, and will help students develop into responsible citizens of the future. This behaviour policy seeks to promote good and minimise inappropriate behaviour, by being both transparent and fair to all involved. The principles on which this policy is based are: Encouragement and acknowledging good behaviour and discipline. Promotion of self-esteem by encouraging students to value and respect themselves and others. Encouraging a positive relationship with carers and families to develop a shared approach to behaviour. Encouraging students to take an individual responsibility for the effect of their own actions on others. Support for students to help them develop their own sense of responsibility and good behaviour. Provision of a safe environment free from violence, bullying, any form of harassment and disruption. Ensuring early intervention and response to inappropriate behaviour. A consistency of response to both positive and negative behaviour. Explaining to students why certain behaviour is unacceptable so that they may realise why their actions have consequences. Working to meet the needs of any student with a behavioural, emotional or social difficulty. All students in the Federation having access to social and emotional learning as part of the Personal Learning Planning process. Roles and responsibilities 1. The Governing Body will establish in consultation with the executive principal, staff and families the policy for this promotion of good behaviour and keep it under review. It will ensure that it is communicated to students, carers and families, that it is non-discriminatory and that the expectations are clear. 2. The Heads of schools will be responsible for the implementation and day to day management of the policy and procedures, and will decide on the appropriateness of contacting and/ or informing outside agencies of behaviour incidents. 3. Staff, including teachers, support staff and student teachers, will be responsible for ensuring that the policy and procedures are followed, and are consistently and fairly applied. Mutual support amongst all staff in the implementation of the 18 Starting School
19 policy is essential; so that a high quality learning environment is created in which students develop self-discipline and personal responsibility. 4. The Governing Body, Executive Principal and staff will ensure there is no differential application of the policy on any ethnic, national origin, cultural, religious, gender, disability or sexuality grounds. They will also ensure that the concerns of students are listened to and appropriately addressed. 5. Families and Carers are expected to support the Federation in upholding the high standards of behaviour outlined in this policy and will have the opportunity to raise any issues arising from the operation of this policy. 6. Students will be expected to take responsibility for their own behaviour and the health and safety of others. They will be made fully aware of the behaviour policy, procedures and expectations. Students also have a responsibility to ensure that any incidents of disruption, bullying and any form of harassment are reported. What constitutes acceptable behaviour? The Federation is committed to helping all students become members of the community and responsible citizens. This means that we have high standards and expectations of the way in which students communicate and act both in and around our schools, on out of school activities and in other educational establishments. We will expect high standards of behaviour both to and from school and at all times during the school day. We will expect all students to 1. Speak respectfully to each other and all members of the community. 2. Respect the environment and the possessions of others. 3. Wear the Federation uniform. 4. Observe the rules to remember, which are published in the school journal. 5. Take responsibility for themselves and others, especially in group situations, and be aware of how their behaviour might affect others. 6. What information will be collected Each children and young people service or education setting in Cambridgeshire collects information from you and may receive information about you from various sources, current and or previous schools and the Learning Records Service. The Authority will also hold personal information about children in its care and those children who receive a service from the Authority. So that we are able to provide you with the relevant services, it is necessary for us to collect certain information about you. The types of information that we may collect will include: i. Name, date of birth, address and contact details ii. Identifiers such as national insurance number, NHS number, unique pupil number, unique learner number iii. Characteristics such as your ethnic group, home circumstances, language and health information (eg whether you smoke) iv. National curriculum assessment results for children v. School attendance/exclusion information for children vi. Details of any special educational needs for children vii. Where appropriate, relevant medical information for children or parents/carers. (e.g. a special educational need or disability service For post 14 qualifications, a child s unique learner number will be supplied to us by the Learning Records Service viii. Any additional personal information that is necessary for us to assess and provide you with the service that you require 22 Starting School
23 How your information will be used We use information about people who receive a service to ensure that we are able to carry out specific functions for which we have a responsibility, for example, the assessment of any special educational needs that a child might have. What this means for you is that your information will be used within the Children, Families and Adults (CFA) Service to allow us to complete a range of functions as part of our responsibility as the provider of education, care and support services throughout the County. These functions are detailed within the Who we are section and broadly cover the areas below: i. Commissioning Services ii. Supporting teaching and learning, monitoring and reporting on progress of children in school, assessing how well schools are performing iii. Providing appropriate support and pastoral care in both a school and social care setting iv. Supporting children and families by providing services Information may also be used to produce statistics to allow us to make informed decisions, for example, the funding of services or to assess the performance of schools, in many cases involving only aggregated, statistical data. v. Auditing how well our services are meeting needs. vi. Improving financial modelling and service planning vii. Enabling ethnicity and disability monitoring viii. Statistical data sharing with third parties. Any information gathered will be retained in line with statutory requirements and/or the Authority s own retention schedules. Who your information will be shared with In addition to sharing children and young people information with internal partners to deliver services, it may also be necessary, on occasion, to share information with external processors. We will not give information about you to anyone outside the Council without your consent unless required to do so by law in delivering our statutory functions, or such actions are necessary for safeguarding children or to deliver the services which you have requested. information with bodies such as the NHS and voluntary organisations to support the health, wellbeing and care needs of children and young people. We are required to pass on some information to the Department for Education (DfE) and any partner agencies with whom the DfE may work. The DfE uses this to help with policy formation, performance management and funding, examination data and analysis and to assist with the development of good practice. Schools may be required to pass information to the Authority, other schools and the DfE in order to deliver services and to comply with statutory requirements. Attend Progress Consultations and discussions about my child s progress. Read letters from school and reply if necessary. Support the school if sanctions become necessary. 7. Support events that the school is involved in. As a student I will do my best to: 1. Wear full school uniform and bring the right equipment to school. 2. Attend school every day on time. 3. Listen to my teacher and work hard. Write all my home learning in my journal, do my home learning tasks and hand it in on time. 4. Behave well in and outside of school and on school trips, following the rules and expectations. 5. Let my Tutor or teacher know if I have any worries. 6. Take all letters and reports home to my parent/carer. Complete any sanctions which become necessary. 7. Find out what opportunities are open to me. As a school we will do our best to: 1. Check that school uniform is worn and tell your child what is needed for lessons. 2. Encourage good attendance and punctuality. 3. Teach good quality lessons. Prepare your child in a range of subjects that will allow them to succeed in public examinations. Set and mark appropriate work. Listen and respond quickly to any concerns. 6. Hold regular parent and student meetings. Report regularly on the progress, attendance and punctuality of your child.
