1 Introduction to School Nursing Team School Nursing Community & Therapy Services North Lincolnshire This leaflet has been designed to give you important information about your condition / procedure, and to answer some common queries that you may have.
2 Introduction Your School Nursing Team consists of trained nurses, Health Care Assistants and clerical staff. They are trained to work with children, families and school staff and have a special interest in every school aged child s health and wellbeing. The team has links with many other professionals, who also work with children, to support children and young people throughout their school life. We provide a link between education and health. The team works between Monday Friday 8.30 am 5.00 pm during term time. There is a restricted service during school holidays. Aim of School Nursing Services All members of the team have a public health role in working with school aged children and their families. This means we aim to prevent disease and promote health and wellbeing. We do this be encouraging healthier lifestyles, offering immunisations and giving advice, information and support, to help children: To be healthy To stay safe To enjoy and achieve To make a positive contribution To achieve economic wellbeing What School Nursing Team does? Provide confidential advice, support and information Works with other agencies to safeguard the welfare of children Health assessments and reviews Coordinate and provide school aged immunisation programmes Home visits Support parents / carers who have concerns about their child s health, including children with specific medical needs and special needs Provide drop in sessions in senior schools Refers to and liaises with other agencies National Child Measurement Programme The NHS needs to have a good understanding of how children are growing across the country, so that the best possible services can be provided for them. As a result, a National Child Measurement Programme has been set up to weigh and measure children in England in reception and year 6. You will be sent a letter and information about the programme when your child s class is due to take part. All parents will be informed of the results of their child s measurements by post within six weeks of the measurement date. Immunisations in School Girls in year 8 will be routinely offered the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination. Boys and girls in year 8 are offered school leavers booster Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio.
3 General Advice The School Nurse can offer advice on a range of issues including: General health and growth Eating and nutrition and lifestyles Behaviour Bedwetting and soiling Hearing and speech Positive parenting Child protection Relationships Smoking and drugs education Immunisations Puberty Bullying Vision and hearing problems Sometimes we may suggest a referral to another agency for more help or advice. What about confidentiality? All healthcare professionals have a legal, ethical and contractual duty to protect privacy and confidentiality. We comply fully with the provisions and obligations of the Data Protection Act 1998 in storing and processing your information. Follow this advice to stay happy and healthy: Eat a healthy, balanced diet: don t forget to have five portions of fruit or vegetables a day Don t eat too many fatty or sugary foods Drink lots of water Keep safe in the sun wear a hat and use sun cream Always wear a seat belt in the car Always wash hands before eating, drinking and going to toilet Never speak to strangers Try to have some exercise each day Brush teeth twice a day Contact details within the Trust for patients to obtain additional information If you have any suggestions please contact the Services Manager for Children s Services on Concerns and Queries If you have any concerns / queries about any of the services offered by the Trust, in the first instance, please speak to the person providing your care. Alternatively you can [email protected] Confidentiality Information on NHS patients is collected in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons (e.g. providing care and treatment, managing and planning the NHS, training and educating staff, research etc.). Everyone working for the NHS has a legal duty to keep information about you confidential. Information will only ever be shared with people who have a genuine need for it (e.g. your GP or other professionals from whom you have been receiving care) or if the law requires it, for example, to notify a birth. Please be assured however that anyone who receives information from us is also under a legal duty to keep it confidential. Moving & Handling The Trust operates a Minimal Lifting Policy, which in essence means patients are only ever lifted by nursing staff in an emergency situation. Patients are always encouraged to help themselves as much as possible when mobilising, and if unable to do so, equipment may be used to assist in their safe transfer. If you have any questions regarding moving and handling of patients within the Trust, you may speak to any member of the nursing staff, the designated keyworker within the department or the Trust Moving & Handling Coordinator. Zero Tolerance - Violent, Threatening and Abusive Behaviour The Trust and its staff are committed to providing high quality care to patients within the department. However, we wish to advise all patients / visitors that the following inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated: Swearing Threatening / abusive behaviour Verbal / physical abuse The Trust reserves the right to withdraw from treating patients whom are threatening / abusive / violent and ensuring the removal of those persons from the premises. All acts of criminal violence and aggression will be notified to the Police immediately. Risk Management Strategy The Trust welcomes comments and suggestions from patients and visitors that could help to reduce risk. Perhaps you have experienced something whilst in hospital, whilst attending as an outpatient or as a visitor and you felt at risk. Please tell a member of staff on the ward or in the department you are attending / visiting.
