The City is providing a challenging part-time opportunity for an experienced, energetic, service-oriented Librarian. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills and knowledge of current reference, literary, and electronic resources to work in the San Leandro Main Library or one of the branch libraries. Currently, the City is recruiting to fill two part-time Librarian positions. This position reports directly to a Senior Librarian and may be primarily responsible for some or all of the following activities: providing quality information services to meet the needs of library customers, guiding the public in the use of the Library s online public access catalog, print and non-print electronic resources, the Internet, reader s advisory, training and supervising library staff and community volunteers, planning, promoting, and presenting library educational or enrichment programs, and evaluating materials to add to the Library s collection. Further, this position requires an individual to have a good knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of professional public library services, especially as they relate to in-print and electronic reference, adult literature and technological resources. This position is scheduled to work an average of 16 hours per week. You could be assigned to work various shifts during weekdays and weekends. The City's employment benefit package is not extended to hourly part-time positions. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
2 Definition: Performs professional librarian work in the public library; maintains the library collections; technical processes and reference activities; supervises operations of neighborhood branch libraries; plans and promotes children, student, and adult activities of the library; performs related work as required. Supervision Exercised and Received: Oversees the work of para-professionals and volunteers and provides input regarding work schedules; work activities and training. Receives general direction from assigned management and supervisory staff. Essential Functions: The essential functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity. Selects and catalogs general collection of books, historical objects, periodicals, media and other reference items contained in the library; reviews and keeps abreast of major selection tools; reviews books, periodicals and collections which are outdated or underutilized, and recommends removal and disposition; coordinates donations to library and museum; Provides reference research and information assistance to library patrons; locates books and other materials; instructs and assists patrons in locating information and materials in person or utilizing a variety of media including the Internet; Processes inter-library loans and provides related reference services; Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to his/her supervisor; Performs required duties under the City's disaster response plan; Performs a variety of record keeping functions including preparing reports and maintaining necessary operating records; Administers various special library activities throughout the year such as reading programs and other special programs for patrons; arranges for related equipment, facilities and vendors; Promotes interest in library programs through publicity, program brochures, cooperation with various community groups and public contacts; speaks before citizen groups, students and other business and civic organizations;
3 Collects fees for library services and programs; Assists with training and preparation of training materials for library para-professionals and volunteers; Attends workshops and meetings as part of continuing education and professional development; Assists with troubleshooting functional problems with library computer equipment and applications; powers up and down computer equipment prior to library daily opening and closure; Enforces library policy to ensure the safety and comfort of staff and patrons; Instructs patrons in use of computers, software and internet usage; May create library informational handouts and/or brochures; Performs a variety of administrative tasks relating to library operations; and Performs special projects as assigned. Non-essential Functions: Provides input and creates content related to library s website; Maintains and reports on daily usage statistics; Conducts set up and tear down of equipment/materials for events and programs; Coordinates gallery events; Proctors exams as requested; and Performs other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: Principles and practices of professional library services which include library automation technology, selection and development of library collections and advisory and reference
4 desk services; Planning, promoting and presenting adult and student educational or enrichment programs; Community network and resources for outreach programs and promotions; and General catalog, classification and index systems. Ability to: Provide reference interviews with library patrons to serve their informational needs; Communicate and problem-solve effectively with a diverse population; Assist with training and work assessments for para-professionals and volunteers; Use computer equipment and applications in daily performance of job duties; Read and review professional and/or technical literature; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Select and catalog library collections and materials; and Promote interest in library services and activities. Education: Graduation from an American Library Association - accredited college or university with a Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Services Degree. Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience in the areas of adult, youth and children s program development and collection development; community outreach programs and technical processing. Licenses/certifications/other requirements: Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to various branch locations and meetings. Classification requires the possession and
5 continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver s license.
