The webinar method provides a number of advantages, including the ability to bring nationally recognized infection prevention experts directly to your organization in the most cost effective manner. In addition, each program will be recorded and archived to allow for review at a later date. Series Objectives Enhance the knowledge of basic hospital infection prevention and control for the front-line healthcare managers. Explore the critical role of the healthcare manager in addressing the challenge of preventing healthcare-associated infections. Identify effective infection prevention accountability strategies. Share related best practice and success story initiatives. Suggested Participation Infection control, quality, educators, risk managers, chief nursing officers, environmental services, and other healthcare professionals interested in this series. 4 About the Speakers Denise Murphy is the Vice President and Chief Safety and Quality Officer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis. Prior to taking that position, she spent seven years as Director of Healthcare Epidemiology and Patient Safety for BJC HealthCare. Denise went to nursing school in Philadelphia, received her BSN in Portland, Maine, and a Master of Public Health degree from St. Louis University, School of Public Health. She graduated from the first AHA/National Patient Safety Foundation sponsored Leadership Fellowship training program in August Denise s early nursing experience was in pediatric ICUs, surgical nursing and nursing management. She entered the field of Infection Prevention and Control in 1981, and has been an epidemiologist in hospitals ranging from beds, in rural and urban settings. Her presentations and publications have focused on prevention of surgical site and bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia, on establishing or re-designing infection prevention and patient safety services, and the business of infection control, patient safety and performance improvement. Denise is an active member of APIC and SHEA, as well as the American Society for Healthcare Risk Managers (ASHRM). Denise is a Past President of the APIC Board of Directors and remains actively involved in futures planning, leadership development and global business strategy. She is also a member of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention s Hospital Infection Control Practice Advisory Committee (HICPAC). Stephen A. Streed, MS, CIC, is the System Director of Infection Control for Lee Memorial Heart Health System. He is responsible for institutional performance improvement related to nosocomial infections and other key out come measures. Prior to assuming this position, he was President of CCIC Consulting LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to helping healthcare organizations improve the quality of patient care by reducing the incidence of care-associated infections. His other professional experiences include Senior Epidemiologist/Vice President at EipQuest LLC and EpiQuest Europe Ltd. He has also been senior epidemiologist at Cerepleax, Inc. in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and at Stockhausen, Inc. in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is certified in infection control and served on the national Association of Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC) Board of Directors from 1999 to Mr. Streed was the recipient of the 2003 Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC) Achievement Award in He earned both his master s degree in environmental health and bachelor s degree from the University of Iowa. He is a member of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiologists of America (SHEA), and served on the SHEA Long-Term Care Committee from 2003 to Carlene A. Muto, MD, MS, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Director of Infection Control for UPMC Presbyterian. She was recruited to UPMC in July 1999, from the University of Virginia where she received a Masters of Epidemiology and completed her ID and Infection Control training. Her research interests include the epidemiology of vancomycin resistant Enterococci (VRE), identifying ways to halt nosocomial transmission of resistant organisms, and the effects of barrier precautions in reducing colonization rates. She is also involved in patient safety initiatives regarding the reduction of hospital acquired infections and is the chairperson of the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative Nosocomial Infection Control Advisory Committee and co-pi of an AHRQ patient safety grant. Additionally, she has been conducting studies to determine the causes and consequences of a Clostridium difficile nosocomial outbreak as well as the risk factors for severe outcomes and is working on electronic real-time identification of nosocomial infections.
