1 London Centre for Nanotechnology Gordon Street London WC1H 0AH Job title: Marie Curie Trainee (Early Stage Researcher) 2 positions Job reference number: Grade: Terms and Conditions: UCL MCT Grade Salary Range: 22,888-27,608 (including London Allowance of 2,834) plus fees if applicable In accordance with the conditions of employment as laid down in the relevant UCL Staff policies. Marie Curie restrictions apply for details see below Reporting to: Prof. Franco Cacialli Background: Started over 30 years ago with the discovery that conjugated polymers can act as electrical conductors, the area of organic electronics is now on its way to the first commercially successful applications. Large area, low-cost manufacturing methods and compatibility with flexible substrates are two of the most exciting features. One day soon, these attributes may enable flexible and inexpensive large-area organic photovoltaic cells and integrated single-use photodetectors. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been the subject of a significant research effort for the past two decades with a focus on devices that emit almost exclusively in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Bright, high-resolution flat-screen displays made from OLEDs are already a commercial success, and find place in a number of phones, tablets and other applications. Recently, there has been a growing interest in OLEDs that emit in the near infrared (NIR) region ( nm). NIR OLEDs are particularly interesting for night vision-readable displays which are unreadable to the naked eye but could be read with night-vision goggles, or as light source for sensors operating with NIR light. Additionally, the semitransparency of biological tissue between 700 and 1000 nm makes these appealing for a broad class of biomedical applications, and particularly imaging and sensing. Crucially, organic photovoltaic cells (or organic photovoltaic devices OPVDs) with a sensitivity window extended into the NIR region should allow a better coverage of the solar emission spectrum and thus lead to increased photovoltaic performance. Furthermore, organic photosensors with NIR sensitivity are especially important for integration into optoelectronic devices for chemical/biological sensing. Based on these considerations we have identified the development of "Organic Semiconductors for NIR Optoelectronics (OSNIRO)" as a very challenging and exceptionally promising topic for training young high profile European research fellows from Science and Engineering. The strongly interdisciplinary programme will create a critical mass for breakthrough research and training in the field, and identify further challenges and opportunities for research and career development at the end of the programme
2 Summary of Job Function: The Postholders will engage in research and collaboration on organic electronics and related applications, with a special emphasis on materials exhibiting an energy gap in the NIR region of the electromagnetic spectrum. More specifically the post-holders will investigate both the fundamental photophysics of such materials, and combination thereof, as well as their incorporation in devices such as (but not limited to) OLEDs, FETs, PVDs, and photodetectors. The successful applicants will be energetic individuals with a strong can-do attitude, very strong academic record (e.g. UK first-grade degree equivalent, complemented by publications, where possible) and specific experience in the area of organic electronics, as well as an MSc/MSci degree or equivalent programme (or in fact a PhD student at other institutions who is about to obtain the degree, but has not yet completed the course) in Engineering, Physics, Material Science or Physical Chemistry. Because of the nature of the funding (Marie-Curie initial training network (ITN) funded by the European Commission under Framework Programme 7) there are restrictions on eligibility. Specifically, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. In addition, Early-Stage Researchers must (at the time of recruitment) be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged. The position, which is funded by the EU FP7 Marie Curie ITN OSNIRO, is for three years. Women and representatives of minorities are especially encouraged to apply. The functions of the job include: To carry out experimental research within the area of printable and organic electronics and more specifically on OLEDs and PLEDs incorporating NIRemitting materials To fabricate and characterise optoelectronic devices incorporating organic semiconductors, graphenes, nanostructured semiconductors and their hybrids. These devices include but are not limited to resistors, solar cells, field-effect transistors, FETs, light-emitting diodes, LEDs, and light-emitting transistors (LETs). To operate, maintain and obtain data from scanning probe microscopes (especially, AFM, SNOM, SThM). To record, analyse and write up the results of these experiments. To contribute to the drafting and submitting of papers to peer reviewed journals. To contribute to the preparation of progress reports on research for internal and external use (e.g. for funding bodies) as required. To contribute to the overall activities of the research team and department as required. To be responsible for ensuring that equipment is safe and maintained in working order.
3 The post-holder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit, and purpose of the job as requested by Professor Franco Cacialli or his designees. Actively participate at group meetings, meetings with academic and nonacademic collaborators. The postholder will actively follow UCL policies including Equal Opportunities and Race Equality policies. The postholder will maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations. As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the postholder. About UCL UCL is one of the UK's premier universities and is ranked in the world's top 10. It is a world-class research and teaching institution based in London whose staff and former students have included 20 Nobel Prize winners. Founded in 1826, it was the only university in England at that time which admitted students regardless of race or religion. UCL was also the first to admit women on equal terms with men. Today, UCL is an inspiring university in which to work and study and it continues to thrive on the diversity and creativity of its community. UCL is in practice a university in its own right, although constitutionally a college within the federal University of London. With an annual turnover exceeding 700 million, it is financially and managerially independent of the University of London. The UCL community UCL currently employs approximately 8,000 staff and includes academic units as diverse as the Slade School of Fine Art, the Mullard Space Science Laboratory and the Institute of Child Health, which is associated with Great Ormond Street Hospital. In total, there are 54 Academic Departments and Institutes whose activities span the following: arts and humanities, social and historical sciences, law, architecture and the built environment, engineering sciences, mathematical and physical sciences, life and clinical sciences, and medicine. UCL's academic and research staff are a truly
5 international community with more than a quarter coming from 84 countries outside the UK. The UCL student community comprises 12,600 undergraduates and 8,500 graduate students, of whom over 30% come from 130 countries outside the UK. UCL currently offers 270 undergraduate programmes and more than 210 taught postgraduate programmes as well as the opportunity to carry out postgraduate research in all of its subjects. Approximately 40% of the student community is engaged in graduate studies, with about 37% of these graduate students pursuing research degrees. Quality of UCL's teaching and research Two measures of the current quality of UCL's teaching and research are the results of the external teaching quality assessment reviews and the periodic Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The results of the UK's latest research assessment exercise (RAE 2008) confirm the international excellence of UCL's research. The numbers of our researchers shown in RAE 2008 to be carrying out world-leading research place UCL among the top three universities in the UK. Of the 1800 researchers submitted by UCL for RAE 2008, 95% were deemed to have an international level of esteem. The range of UCL's research excellence was demonstrated by outstanding results in RAE 2008 in academic disciplines as diverse as biomedical sciences, architecture and the built environment, economics, law, philosophy and history Another measure of UCL's research excellence has been its success in bidding for external competitive funds from the Joint Infrastructure Fund (JIF) and the Science Research Investment Fund (SRIF). With the addition of required matching funds, JIF and SRIF are allowing UCL to invest more than 350 million into state-of-the-art infrastructure for cutting-edge research and teaching programmes. Equality UCL is proud of its longstanding commitment to equality and to providing a learning, working and social environment in which the rights and dignity of its diverse members are respected. The Equalities website has everything you need to know about Equalities at UCL and some initiatives are highlighted below: Sabbatical Leave following maternity - UCL provides one term of sabbatical leave without teaching commitments for research-active academics returning from maternity, adoption or long-term carer's leave. This support for returners enables staff to more quickly re-establish their research activity. Achievement of five Athena SWAN awards - for good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology (SET) in higher education and research. Tackling underrepresentation - UCL has two workforce equality targets. These targets are to increase the employment of black and minority ethnic (BME) support staff in grades 1-8 to 31% in line with the economically active BME population of Greater London; and to incrementally equalise the representation of men and women in senior grades (9 and 10) with the ultimate aim of a 50:50 split of women and men at this level. Encouraging flexibility - 82% of respondents to the 2009 UCL staff survey felt that their working time could be flexible. UCL's Work Life Balance policy gives employees the right to request a flexible working pattern. Location and working environment
