UCLB is set up as an independent company with its own board of directors and is a leading technology transfer company which supports and commercialises research and innovations arising from UCL, one of the UK s top research-led universities. UCLB has a successful track record and strong reputation for identifying and protecting promising new technologies and innovations from UCL academics. It invests directly in development projects to maximise the potential of the research and manages the commercialisation process of technologies from laboratory to market. UCLB is responsible for the delivery of UCL s commercial-facing knowledge transfer activities by generating income and creating capital value for UCL through the commercial exploitation of research arising from the biomedical, life and physical sciences departments at the university and its associated Institutes. The activities of UCLB are nominally split into three principal sections covering project management and medical device development, biomedical, physical sciences, engineering and arts knowledge transfer activities. These sections are expected to be independent, working under their respective director, but complementary to enhance the spectrum of business activities with third parties, including multi-transactional, inter-faculty transactions. Supporting these sections are business and legal affairs, marketing and the financial and secretarial offices, each with their respective director or manager. All directors are members of the xecutive Management Team which meets monthly. The mission of UCLB is derived from UCL s knowledge transfer strategy which is set by the Vice- Provost of nterprise, who is part of the university s senior management. This requires the company to act as the principle organisation for engaging with business, transacting, monitoring and reporting knowledge transfer activity across UCL. To achieve this, the company and its staff endeavour to: 1. identify and develop knowledge transfer activities; 2. serve as a single point of entry and focus for knowledge transfer activity; 3. promote UCL s expertise and technologies to the world; and 4. provide responsive, professional and coherent support for academic/business collaborations. UCLB supports UCL s Grand Challenges of increasing UCL s positive impact on and contribution to Global Health, Sustainable Cities, Intercultural Interaction and Human Wellbeing.
3 JOB SCRIPTION Job Title: epartment: Associate Business Manager Biomedical Science Job Purpose: The post holder will support UCL Business s knowledge transfer activities across the biomedical faculties at UCL and assist the company in meeting key performance indicators that have been outlined in UCL s recently published nterprise strategy. These include development of commercial transactions including research contracts with industry through to commercialisation of Intellectual Property (IP). The post holder will be a member of the Biopharm team that reports to the irector of Biomedical Science at UCL Business PLC, however their day-to-day line management will be from a Senior Business Manager (SBM) in the Biomedical Science. Key Accountabilities: To be the focal point for intellectual property management (IP) matters within the designated research area Report to a Senior Business Manager in the Biomedical Section uties and Responsibilities 1. Work with their line manager to maintain links with relevant academic departments. a. Help promote the profile and reputation of UCL Business PLC with academics throughout UCL departments/institutes. b. ncourage flow of potential commercial technologies from relevant departments and institutes by raising awareness of commercial opportunities through seminars and courses involving speakers from both industrial and grant awarding organisations. 2. Assist their line manager to establish and maintain commercial relationships. a. Help maintain relationships with commercial organisations, promoting the commercial activities of designated departments/institutes. b. Improve and develop collaboration between UCL and new or existing business clients and develop business networks.
4 3. Work with their line manager on matters relating to Intellectual property management a. Assess scientific and market feasibility of new technologies. b. Undertake patentability due diligence for new inventions using standard databases. c. Assist with initiation of patent protection where necessary and provide input based upon due diligence. d. Identify potential licensing partners. e. Help administer patent prosecution and maintenance, liaising with the inventor and patent attorney. f. Identify those technologies which would be synergistic if developed as a group, and which answer unmet market needs, and bring the relevant academics together to enhance the technology package. g. Provide your line manager with updates of project progress as necessary. h. Liaise with the legal services team in areas such as the provision of appropriate agreements for relevant departments/institutes i. Maintain and update records of projects in patent and project database, Inteum. j. Play active role in UCL Business PLC meetings. 4. Play an active role in the commercialisation of Biomedical Science opportunities including those in ophthalmology, cancer research and child health. Assist in the development of commercialisation strategies for emerging UCL IP and technologies. In the case of licensing opportunities this is likely to include: a. Market assessment activities including primary and secondary market research. b. Prepare technology brief for circulation through web sites, and direct posting to potential licensees as soon as technology can be disclosed. c. Arrange meetings and assist with presentation of technology to potential licensees. d. Assist with preparation of all necessary agreements to license the technology, including evaluations, options and licences. For spinout opportunities, this is likely to include: a. Market assessment activities including primary and secondary market research. b. Assist with business plan construction and strategic direction. This will include activities such as identification of potential customers for the spinout company s products/services, determining clear route to market for the technology and assessment of gaps in the management team. c. Prepare materials for presentation of spinout company business case to relevant UCL Business PLC directors and the UCL Business board. d. Once initial stage is approved, assist in development of full business plan suitable for fund-raising and assist where required in identification of potential investors. In carrying out the above duties the Associate Business Manager is expected to: Work expeditiously and with professionalism to ensure the business is organised efficiently Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding sensitive personnel, financial and commercial information Adhere to UCLB policies including organisational standards, Financial Regulations and qual Opportunities Participate in staff meetings and training as required Maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations
5 To undertake any other duties that are within the scope, spirit and/or purpose of the job, the title of the post and its remuneration as requested by the line manager/irector. Note: The duties described above reflect the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop, the job description will be reviewed and may be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder.
6 TRMS AN CONITIONS Job title: epartment: Associate Business Manager Biomedical Science Salary The full time salary range is 28,000 to 30,000 depending on qualifications and experience. UCLB also operates a Performance Related Pay Scheme under which employees can achieve up to a further 10% of gross annual salary based on agreed targets, both personal and company based. mployees must have achieved a minimum of six months service as at 31 July to be eligible for inclusion in the scheme. Hours of Work This position is full time and the normal hours of work are 35 hours per week, excluding lunch hours. Office hours are 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Pension The post holder will be eligible to join the Company s pension scheme. The company operates two pension schemes - SAUL for new employees and USS for any employee who is an existing member of USS and has left a USS institution. Holidays The leave year runs from 1 October to 30 September. The holiday entitlement is twenty five working days per annum, which may be taken with the approval of the irector of Biopharm. There are also eight Public Holidays, and a further six days leave given to mirror the UCL closure days over Christmas and aster. Probation The appointment is subject to receipt of satisfactory references and to a probationary period of nine months. Season Ticket Loans & Child Care Voucher Scheme Season ticket loans are available to staff who have successfully completed their probationary period, UCLB operates a Child Care Voucher scheme. The season ticket loan and Child Care Voucher scheme are processed via a monthly deduction from salary. Professional Subscriptions Should you be required to be a member of a professional body in connection within your role, UCLB is willing to pay the cost of the professional subscription/membership with the agreement of your line manager. Other UCLB operates a no smoking policy. Staff are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner whilst in the work environment and should be well presented.

Ability and experience of handling a challenging role with confidence, demonstrating initiative, selfmotivation and attention to detail Ability to demonstrate excellent organisation skills, being able to prioritise work and meet deadlines, and work independently without undue supervision.
