3 DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY Doctor of Philosophy in Biology Master of Science in Bioinformatics The biology department combines a broad knowledge base with an in-depth study of specialized areas, and emphasizes close interaction between graduate students and faculty to develop the skills required for creative independent research. Our current research strengths lie in the areas of molecular microbiology, biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, biomechanics, neurobiology, and behavior. Northeastern University s 32-credit hour Master of Science degree program in Bioinformatics provides the cross-disciplinary training in biology, computer science, and information technology along with real-world experience that prepares graduates to play pivotal roles in today s cutting-edge life science, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries. 4 DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL BIOLOGY Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry Master of Science in Chemistry An intellectually rigorous foundation of courses, plus research in a specialized area, prepares PhD students for independent, original research and development in the chemical sciences. The program of study includes challenging course work, but the primary emphasis is on the completion of an original research project, its articulation in a well-written thesis, and its subsequent defense before a panel of department faculty. The full-time degree program typically takes approximately five years to complete. Our industrial version of the program is part-time and designed for students who already have a relevant M.S. degree and are currently employed in a chemical-related industry. The department offers a part-time, non-thesis (30-credit hour) master s degree. The non-thesis program is designed to allow practicing chemical professionals in the greater Boston area who have a relevant bachelor s degree to pursue a master s in chemistry degree part-time by completing coursework during the evening weekday hours. 5 DEPARTMENT OF MARINE & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Doctor of Philosophy in Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology The Ph.D. program in Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology trains independent scientists whose research addresses fundamental and applied questions at local, regional, national, and global scales. This education includes both general and specialized coursework in ecology, evolution, and marine science, with curricular programs including both core and specialized options tailored to each student s research interests. Our goal is to train researchers who can independently pursue the process of science and effectively apply their research to solve both basic questions in ecology, evolution, and marine biology and to apply their work to issues of relevance to society and the environment. Master of Science in Marine Biology The Master of Science in Marine Biology provides the advanced skill set needed to pursue an entry to mid-level career in marine research and can serve as a springboard into top PhD programs in ecology, evolution, and marine biology. This full-time program is offered in conjunction with Northeastern University s Three Seas program. In addition to completing the Three Seas program curriculum for graduate credit, students pursue additional coursework and a 6-month intensive internship with academic research scientists, state and federal agencies, or private consulting firms, complementing and completing the professional science focus of the Master of Science in Marine Biology degree x328 mscinfo@neu.edu northeastern.edu/mes

6 DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Our PhD in Mathematics is designed to provide students with a broad mathematical foundation and a strong command of an area of specialization. Areas of major specialization include Pure Math, Discrete Math, and Probability/Statistics. Students must also choose a minor area of focus and are expected to perform teaching duties as a part of the program. Graduates of the PhD program go on to successful careers in academia and industry. Master of Science in Operations Research Master of Science in Applied Mathematics This 32 credit-hour program provides training in the basic techniques and theories of operations research and their applications to real-world problems. Students in this program develop their analytical skills to attack complex, large-scale optimization problems of both a deterministic and stochastic nature gradmath@neu.edu math.neu.edu The 32 credit-hour MS in Applied Math program can be completed either full-time or part-time, and courses meet in the evenings to accommodate students work schedules. The required courses provide a basic training in mathematical methods, while the elective courses include a wide variety of advanced topics. Students are allowed to take up to two courses outside of the mathematics department, providing the flexibility of building a curriculum fitted to their career interest.

7 DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS Doctor of Philosophy in Physics Master of Science in Physics The doctoral program provides opportunities for graduate students to engage in research and scholarship under the direction of an internationally recognized faculty. Concentrations available in different subfields reflect the forefront research activities of the department, including biological physics, condensed matter physics, and elementary particle physics. The program for the PhD degree consists of the required coursework, a qualifying examination, a preliminary research seminar, the completion of a dissertation based upon original research performed by the student, and a dissertation defense. The physics department offers thesis and non-thesis Master of Science degrees. The non-thesis Physics MS can be obtained by taking a specified set of courses. Alternatively, a master s level thesis may be undertaken in lieu of specified coursework. Both of these degree completion options may be pursued either full time or part time. While undertaking the MS in Physics, students apply graduate-level knowledge to solve problems in the areas of electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, statistical mechanics, and advanced mathematical methods gradphysics@neu.edu northeastern.edu/physics

8 DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology The Ph.D. program in the psychology department covers a wide spectrum of contemporary behavioral science within a close-knit community of faculty and students. The program offers four distinct areas of experimental emphasis: behavioral neuroscience, cognition, perception, and social/ personality. The PhD program prepares students to become colleagues in research and teaching in psychology. 9 BIOTECHNOLOGY GRADUATE PROGRAMS Master of Science in Biotechnology The master s degree program in Biotechnology provides students with a common core of knowledge in biotechnology, with particular emphasis on their ability to integrate knowledge across disciplinary boundaries. The program is designed to allow students to pursue advanced training and excel in science while simultaneously developing highly-valued business skills. Students in this program receive rigorous interdisciplinary training that includes both course and lab work coupled with industrial co-op experiences. Graduate Certificate in Biopharmaceutical Analytical Sciences This 12-credit hour graduate certificate program is designed to provide students with an advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of state-of-the-art analyses of protein structures with focus on the characterization and quantification of proteins and variant derivatives. The certificate will provide an opportunity for individuals, particularly those who are working in the various sectors of biotechnology including basic research of biological systems, discovery, development and manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals, to enhance their competency and practical skills enabling them to increase productivity and further contribute to their professions. Students who successfully complete the graduate certificate are welcome to apply to the MS in Biotechnology Program. 10 NETWORK SCIENCE GRADUATE PROGRAM Doctor of Philosophy in Network Science The interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Network Science is a world-leading research program that will train the next generation of leaders in this increasingly important field. Most disciplines, from physics to sociology to health sciences, involve complex networks. This Ph.D. program is not only about furthering the discipline of network science but also about training experts who can enrich their respective disciplines, helping their colleagues to deal with the complex systems they need to confront. Students have the opportunity to work with some of the most prominent network scientists in the world, and can participate in cutting edge research activities and work with unique large-scale network datasets. The interdisciplinary nature of this program draws students who are interested in applying network science in different areas and disciplines.
