Cancer Research Graduate Programs The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
Mission The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public. Vision We shall be the premier cancer center in the world, based on the excellence of our people, our research-driven patient care and our science. We are Making Cancer History. Core values Caring By our words and actions we create a caring environment for everyone. Integrity We work together to merit the trust of our colleagues and those we serve. Discovery We embrace creativity and seek new knowledge.
At MD Anderson I learned how to think logically about biological problems and to design the right experiments to address those problems. The foundation I received was critical to establishing myself as an independent scientist. Valerie Reinke, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Yale University Cutting-edge. Flexible. Student-oriented. The Cancer Research Graduate Programs at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston are all of these and much more. Students who carry out research at MD Anderson contribute to the fight against cancer while earning a Ph.D.
Learn from the best
The people here are so passionate about what they do. Everybody cares so much. It s inspiring to be around people who are so inspired. Keri Schadler, graduate student Program in Cancer Biology Innovative research is the driving force behind MD Anderson s international reputation for scientific excellence and outstanding cancer care. Students earning a Ph.D. degree in the Cancer Research Graduate Programs receive their training from some of the world s top scientists and play a role in discoveries that lead to new therapies for patients. By coming to MD Anderson for your graduate education, you will join an institution that: receives the most research grants from the National Cancer Institute and ranks No. 1 in the nation in cancer care (U.S. News & World Report survey).
A world of opportunities
MD Anderson provides Ph.D. training in a diverse range of subjects, from the basic sciences to the development of cancer treatments. With an eye toward career development, you can take advantage of workshops and seminars on grantsmanship, writing scientific papers, public speaking and other topics presented by leading cancer researchers and experts in career development. Exciting areas of study include: Biomathematics and Biostatistics Cancer Biology Cancer Metastasis Research Experimental Therapeutics Genes and Development Human and Molecular Genetics Immunology Medical Physics Molecular Carcinogenesis Molecular Pathology Patient-Based Biological Research Virology and Gene Therapy Not many places in the world are capable of combining outstanding clinical programs with basic research in areas like epigenetics, biochemistry and stem cell biology. This gives MD Anderson a huge advantage. Gustavo J. Martinez, graduate student, Program in Immunology
A great environment
With its exceptional atmosphere and excellent faculty working at the very frontier of their research areas, MD Anderson has been a great place for an international student like me; it is like a family away from home. Dipyaman Ganguly, graduate student, Program in Immunology MD Anderson is located in the Texas Medical Center the world s largest and most modern center for biomedical research and education. Our campus is adjacent to other universities and medical schools, student-friendly shopping and dining areas, as well as bus and light rail transit centers. Houston has the most affordable housing of the 10 largest U.S. metropolitan areas and the second-lowest cost of living among major American cities. Houston and its surrounding communities feature a dynamic and ethnically diverse population.
How to apply
The Cancer Research Graduate Programs are part of The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston (GSBS). All graduate applicants are reviewed and admitted through the GSBS. Once admitted, students may choose any graduate program within MD Anderson or pursue study in other GSBS graduate programs or an interdisciplinary training program. All Ph.D. students receive full financial support throughout their training, which includes tuition and fees, as well as a $26,000/year stipend ( ) to support living expenses and health insurance. In addition, annual competitive awards are available for outstanding research projects to support student travel to scientific meetings. Admissions information and online applications:
