The multidisciplinary team approach to conflict resolution is what sets collaborative practice apart from other dispute resolution processes. This interactive multidisciplinary training will take the participants through a collaborative divorce case, emphasizing the elements of collaborative practice, the roles of the collaborative attorneys, mental health professionals, and financial specialists, and effective ways of building and sustaining the professional team. The training includes teaching, live and video demonstration, and ample time for role plays. Come join your colleagues for this highly interactive and important learning experience.

6 Rachel B. Goldman, J.D., is a partner at Boston Law Collaborative, LLC, a multidisciplinary law firm, where she specializes in collaborative family law, mediation, settlement negotiation, and parent coordination. Her areas of practice include all aspects of divorce and family law, including alimony, child support, custody, parenting plans, division of marital assets, post-divorce modifications, same-sex partnership dissolutions and divorce, marital mediation, prenuptial agreements, and post-nuptial agreements. She has represented clients and served as mediator and parent coordinator in hundreds of cases involving complex legal and emotional issues. In addition to her law and mediation practice, Rachel frequently teaches and presents to professional groups, law students, and the public about collaborative law and mediation. She was one of the first collaborative attorneys to be trained in Massachusetts and is a leader in the collaborative law community. She is a faculty member of and was instrumental in designing the three-day Multidisciplinary Collaborative Practice Training currently offered in Massachusetts. She also teaches introductory and advanced mediation courses with the Community Dispute Settlement Center and Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education. Rachel has been a Board member of the Massachusetts Collaborative Law Council since She currently serves as its clerk and co-chair of the Advanced Training Committee. Doris Tennant, J.D., specializes in the out-of-court resolution of family law matters, primarily through collaborative practice. Doris also mediates family law matters and family business and workplace disputes, serves as a parenting coordinator in high conflict cases, and is certified as a family mediator by the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation. Doris has been selected by the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Best Lawyers in America for her specialty in Collaborative Family law. Before specializing in family law, Doris was a civil litigator focusing on bankruptcy and creditor s rights at the Boston firms of Palmer & Dodge and Widett Slater & Goldman. Doris taught at Suffolk University Law School s Academic Support Program and was a Guberman Teaching Fellow and Adjunct Lecturer in Legal Studies at Brandeis University. Prior to attending law school, she directed the expository writing program at Marlboro College in Marlboro, Vermont. Doris is a graduate of Boston College Law School, Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Emory University. Sanford M. Portnoy, Ph.D. is Director of The Center for the Study of Psychology and Divorce at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. He is a nationally recognized expert in the use of psychological interventions to reduce the emotional impact and harm of divorce, and for teaching lawyers and their clients the skills to effectively manage difficult and highly emotional clients. He has presented invited addresses at a number of national lawyers conferences, has provided workshops and institutes for lawyers and judges around the country, and has written for a number of family law and psychology publications, including a regularly featured series of articles for The American Journal of Family Law. He has been recognized by the Family Law Section of the American Bar Association for his contributions to advancing the field of

7 family law, and his firm, Portnoy Associates ( provides client management consultation and divorce coaching among its services. Dr. Portnoy is the author of the Family Lawyer s Guide to Building Successful Client Relationships, published by the ABA in He maintains an active clinical practice in Newton, Mass., and has served as President of the Massachusetts Psychological Association, as a member of the Council of Representatives of the American Psychological Association, and as Chair of APA s Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice. Dr. Portnoy is quite active in the practice of Collaborative Divorce. He is President-Elect of the Massachusetts Collaborative Law Council.
