1 MCA 31st Annual Conference Talking Through Conflict: Exploring Communication Strategies 31st Year of MCA November 13-14, 2015 Bowie State University Martin Luther King Center
2 Letter from the First Vice President November 13-14, 2015 Greetings and welcome to the Maryland Communication Association s (MCA) 31 st Annual Conference. We also welcome you to Bowie State University. Our theme for this year is Communicating Through Conflict. As we gather to commemorate another year of scholarship, teaching and communication we will continue to incorporate the overarching mission of MCA, the examination of traditional forms of communication along with new technology and its impacts on our lives today Our conference this year will address the many ways we face conflict on a daily basis as scholars, educators and media consumers. From our featured journalist panel on Friday titled Covering Conflict: Journalists Discuss the Impact and Implications of Their Coverage of Baltimore in Spring 2015 to our panel presentation and keynote luncheon address with Dr. Nader Chaaban of Montgomery College, "Teaching Our Students About Conflict Management and Resolution", we will explore avenues for moving through and beyond conflict. The world of communication is an exciting area and stands at the forefront of our human experience in both the professional and interpersonal realm. MCA provides an intuitive forum to gather and discuss new ideas and research as we each learn and expand our knowledgebase. In closing, we thank each and every one of you for your attendance and support for this year s conference and for the Maryland Communication Association. We especially thank Bowie State University and the Department of Communications for their generous support and hospitality this year. We hope you have a wonderful experience! Warmly, Jayne Cubbage Jayne Cubbage, Ph.D. First Vice President, Maryland Communication Association Assistant Professor, Bowie State University
3 About Maryland Communication Association MCA s mission is to promote the study and development of effective communication; to promote cooperation among communication professionals; and to influence the practices and policies of relevant institutions and organizations. MCA encompasses communication educators, students, and practitioners throughout the state of Maryland. Membership includes active researchers and authors in the field as well as past officers of regional and national communication associations. MCA was rooted in the Maryland Communication Cooperative formulated in 1973; unfortunately, the state association ceased to function from 1986 to However, in September 1997, the Maryland Communication Association formally reorganized. Since the reorganization, MCA has had an active role in facilitating the articulation agreements in Communication in the State of Maryland. Most notable accomplishment is the pivotal role taken in the shaping and adoption of statewide competency standards for Communication courses in General Education Programs.
