Respiratry therapists wrk under the directin f a physician and assist in the diagnsis, treatment, and management f patients with breathing disrders. Care includes assessment, evaluatin, and treatment f Page 2 2

3 patients ranging in age frm premature infants t the elderly. Therapists als wrk with adults wh have chrnic lung disrders, such as asthma r emphysema. Respiratry therapists pssess gd cmmunicatin skills. Respiratry therapists wrk side by side with physicians, nurses and ther health care prviders in caring fr patients with lung disrders. As part f the health care team, respiratry therapists interview patients, make recmmendatins t physicians t change therapy based n their assessments, and prvide patient and family educatin regarding lung disease. Respiratry therapists are critical thinkers. As part f a fast-paced health care team, they must be able t react quickly t changes in a patient s cnditin. Respiratry therapists lve t wrk with technlgy. They manage life supprt equipment and artificial airways fr patients wh can t breathe n their wn. Respiratry therapists are present during high-risk deliveries, where a premature infant may be at risk fr breathing cmplicatins. When accident victims lse the ability t breathe n their wn, respiratry therapists help administer lifesaving xygen. Career Outlk: The need fr respiratry therapists is expected t grw faster than the natinal average fr all jbs. In fact, a respiratry therapist is in the tp 25 f the best 100 jbs fr 2013 named by U.S. Wrld and News Reprt. As the number f lder Americans increase, the need fr Respiratry Care will increase as well. Additinally, as new treatment advances are made fr heart attack and accident victims, premature babies, and AIDS patients, an increased demand fr Respiratry therapists will be created. Earnings: In 2011, the mean salary in the U.S. fr new therapists entering the field is $55,250 and the unemplyment rate fr respiratry therapists is 2.9%. Academic Features: An assciate f science degree in Respiratry Care requires a minimum f tw years t cmplete. Students may cmplete the prerequisite curses n a part-time basis. The prfessinal prtin f the prgram requires a full time cmmitment. Prgram Gals and Purpses: The gal f the respiratry care prgram is t prepare graduates with demnstrated cmpetence in the cgnitive (knwledge), psychmtr (skills), and affective (behavir) learning dmains f respiratry care practice as perfrmed by registered respiratry therapists. The purpse f the respiratry care prgram is t prvide graduates wh can fulfill the fllwing: Recgnize, adapt t and assist in the changing health requirements f the cmmunity. 4 Establish effective cmmunicatin skills/relatinships with members f ther disciplines, patients, and their families. Assist the physician in the treatment, management, diagnstic testing, cntrl and care f patients with disease/disrders assciated with the cardipulmnary system. Admissin Selectin Prcedures Ivy Tech is an pen-admissin cllege. Hwever, admissin t the Respiratry Care Practitiner Prgram is selective. Admissin t the Cllege des nt guarantee admissin int the prgram. Step 1: Admissin int the Cllege Students must first be fficially admitted t the cllege. Cntact the Office f Student Affairs fr Cllege admissin requirements. Student must cmplete any academic skills advancement curses identified by the ACCUPLACER Assessment exam. STEP 2: Admissin t the Respiratry Care Prgram Attend a required prgram infrmatin sessin. The fllwing prerequisites must be cmpleted prir t enrllment int the technical/prfessinal cmpnent f the Respiratry Care prgram. (END OF SPRING SEMESTER FOR FALL START DATE) Prgram curse prerequisites: APHY 101 APHY 102 BIOL 201 r 211 CHEM 101 r 111 MATH 1XX (MATH 123 beginning fall, 2014) ENGL 111 Prgram Admissin Test: Take the Test f Essential Academic Skills (TEAS V) Refer t campus-specific instructins t register fr and t cmplete the TEAS. The TEAS may be taken up t tw times in a tw-year perid regardless f the testing lcatin. The tw test attempts/dates must be at least 30 days apart. The student must pay the apprved testing fee each time. Scres will be valid fr tw years frm the initial TEAS test date. The TEAS has fur parts: reading, english, math and science. The Adjusted Individual Ttal Scre is used fr determinatin f pints fr the prgram selectin prcedure (see Selectin Plicy infrmatin belw). Prgram Applicatin: Submit a prgram applicatin n r befre the established deadline Page 4 4

5 Cntact an academic/prgram advisr fr campus-specific infrmatin abut applicatin requirements. This will include an applicatin frm, TEAS scres, unfficial transcripts frm all clleges Deadline fr submitting applicatin materials: Fall admissin: March 1 st Preference is given t prgram applicatins submitted by the stated deadline; but if necessary, the deadline may be extended t fill class seats. Selectin Plicy: When the prgram receives mre qualified applicants than the number f seats available, a pint system is utilized t determine admissin t the prgram. Ttal pints determine the rank f applicants. Subsequently, seats are ffered t the highest rank n dwn until all seats are filled, the number f which are based n clinical site availability. Students meeting the stated applicatin deadline are ranked utilizing this pint system at the end f spring semester. Students with the highest rank scre will receive a Letter f Acceptance and an Essential Functins Frm t their hme residence. (Cllege database address). The number f students receiving letters f acceptance is dependent n the number f clinical slts available. B. The Essential Functins Certificatin Statement will be signed and returned at the Orientatin Sessin Page 5 5

6 C. A Mandatry Orientatin Sessin will be held fr students wh are accepted int the prgram. This sessin is cmmnly held in the middle f July. Students wh d nt attend this rientatin sessin will frfeit their admissin int the prgram and the next student with the highest ranking will be cntacted thrugh their Ivy Tech address. D. Students wh are nt admitted t the prgram r wh decline admissin must reapply and are nt given preferential cnsideratin. The infrmatin belw is intended t give students a brief verview f clinical requirements and des nt replace the handbk. In chsing a career in Respiratry Care, students will be expected t fllw prfessinal dress cde requirements and prfessinal and academic cde f cnduct and behavir. Specific unifrm requirements and health frms will be given t students when they are admitted int the prgram. Fr student and patient safety, prir t the start f the student s clinical experience, hspitals require all students t have the fllwing: physical exam up-t-date immunizatins annual tw-step TB test Hepatitis B vaccine Annual/Biannual CPR certificatin fr Healthcare Prviders Criminal backgrund check Drug screening Universal Precautins, Fire Safety, and HIPAA Rule training Please nte that health frms and due dates fr submitting dcumentatin f the abve immunizatins and screenings will be distributed at the mandatry rientatin sessin r after the prgram has begun in the fall semester. Further, hspitals have very strict rules regarding bdy jewelry, tatts, and artificial nails, etc.. Tatts must nt be visible, nly ne earring per ear lbe, all visible bdy jewelry including tngue piercing must be remved and artificial nails and bnding agents are prhibited.
