3 HISTORY South Georgia State College The history of South Georgia State College begins over one hundred years ago, in 1906, with the founding by the state legislature as the Eleventh District Agricultural and Mechanical School in Douglas, Georgia. The A&M schools were residential secondary schools that gave rise to several of Georgia s colleges and universities. In 1927, the Georgia Legislature passed a bill that made South Georgia College the first state supported two-year college. In 1932, the college joined 25 other institutions to become original members of the University System of Georgia. This placed these colleges under the governance of the Board of Regents. In 1936, the college received the name South Georgia College. The three original buildings on the semicircle of the Douglas campus were built in the few years following the founding of the school. The campus of today retains much of the character of this earlier time. These historic structures are now joined by other buildings that continue to maintain the notable nature of the campus while moving forward with modern design; its 190 acres provide a blend of wellmaintained classroom and residential space with open green areas suitable for student gatherings. In December 1970, the University System established a new junior college in Waycross, Georgia. Six years later, in September of 1976, Waycross Junior College welcomed its first students. In 1987, the institution became known as Waycross College. Throughout its history, the College added buildings as needed to better serve its students and the Waycross community. In January 2011, University System Chancellor Hank Huckaby announced the consolidation of eight System institutions into four; South Georgia College and Waycross College were two of those institutions. As a result of the consolidation process, the two schools became known as South Georgia State College and received a new mascot (the Hawks) and colors (royal blue and gray). As a consolodated institution, SGSC is able to expand its reach, and grow its community involvement while maintaing the personal and unique aspects that make each campus feel like home. In the recent past, such additions as the expanded wellness center with indoor pool, new athletic fields, and the renovation of the Clower Student Life Center have given the students new places to spend their recreational time. The construction of Tiger Village I and II residence halls and the renovation of the dining hall create a student-centered environment within walking distance of one another. Plus, the Engram Hall Student Success Center places all the student services together in one area for ease and convenience with new student enrollment and current student financial services. The beauty of the campus has not diminished over the decades, and visitors to South Georgia State College today marvel at the historic feel of the campus intertwined with the modern touches of the new and renovated structures. As visitors walk around the campus today, it is easy for them to see the appeal of this hometown college with a progressive mind set. The Waycross campus has its own array of academic and recreational venues, including two lakes, a paracourse walking trail that meanders through the 150-acre campus, a gymnasium, and tennis and racquetball courts. The Waycross campus is also home to the South Georgia State College Hawks men s basketball team. Today, South Georgia State College is a multi-campus institution that serves over 2,600 students from 106 Georgia counties, 27 states, and 10 countries. The value and quality of its academics has been at the forefront of South Georgia State College. In 2011, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia named South Georgia State College as a state college changing its mission and purpose to include two bachelor s degrees. 4 - SGSC Hawks Media Guide Swimming DISCOVER South Georgia State College South Georgia State College (SGSC) was created by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on January 8, 2013, from the consolidation of Waycross College and South Georgia College in Douglas. The new, multi-campus institution serves over 2,600 students from 106 Georgia counties, 27 states, and 10 countries. SGSC s main service area encompasses 15 counties in southern Georgia. It includes campuses in Douglas and Waycross, entry programs through Georgia Southwestern State University (Americus) and Valdosta State University, and Accel programs in partnership with area high schools. As a result, SGSC now provides a wider selection of classes for its students. SGSC currently offers two bachelor s degrees -- a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences -- along with associate degrees in over 20 programs of study. Now known as a state colloege within the University System of Georgia, the potential exists for SGSC to offer additional baccalaureate degrees in the future. The College is committed to achievement and utilizes a number of strategies on each campus to guide students in their academic pursuits. Among these strategies are tutoring and individualized academic guidance from professionals in their field of study. Other services, such as counseling and disability services, help to support overall student success. Students have the flexibility to live on campus in Douglas or plan their schedules around family and work by utilizing any of SGSC s convenient locations. The Douglas campus boasts two modern residence halls, which provide additional student life programming and all the amenities and comforts of home to enjoy college life. A revitalized dining hall and the Clower Student Life Center offer additional social activities. Likewise, a newly-renovated Student Learning Center and the James M. Dye Student Services Building provide a sense of community and fun for students utilizing the Waycross campus. SGSC also offers over 20 clubs and organizations between both campuses to provide students with a well-rounded collegiate experience. Intercollegiate athletics has a rich heritage in both Douglas and Waycross, drawing athletes from throughout Georgia as well as other states and countries. The athletic program includes baseball, women s softball, women s soccer, men s and women s swimming, men s and women s cross country, and men s basketball. Students may also enjoy intramural sports and individual play on numerous fields and courts on both campuses. The Douglas campus features a nine-hole golf course and an indoor Junior Olympicsized pool in its Wellness Center complex. The Waycross campus has its own array of recreational venues, including two lakes, a paracourse walking trail that meanders through the 150-acre campus, a gymnasium, and tennis and racquetball courts. SGSC currently contributes over $70 million annually to the region s economy. The College partners with economic development officials to strengthen the quality of life in the communities it serves by hosting over 30 cultural or educational events each year. Both the South Georgia College Foundation and James M. Dye Foundation support the College through annual awards of tuition assistance. The Foundations also provide funding for campus priorities not covered by the state or through tuition in order to strengthen the institution s academic and economic footprint throughout the state of Georgia. For more information about the many educational opportunities available at South Georgia State College, visit or call (912) (Douglas campus) or (912) (Waycross campus). 4 ATHLETICS South Georgia State College The current South Georgia State College athletic program has won over a dozen state titles in baseball, basketball, golf and softball. Currently, the athletic department competes interscholastically in baseball, softball, women s soccer, men s basketball, swimming, and cross country. The then-south Georgia College softball team won the 2008 Region XVII Championship and earned a berth in the national tournament in Plant City, Florida. In the season, five teams both cross country teams and swim teams, and the baseball team competed in their respective national tournaments. The baseball team finished second in the conference, won the East Central District Championship, and advanced to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. The then-tigers went 1-2 in the tournament, and opened the 2012 season ranked eighth in the country. The women s soccer team advanced to the Final Four of the state tournament in 2012, earned a postseason berth in 2013, and earned second in the region fall In a short period of time, the swim team has positioned itself as one of the top junior college swimming programs in the country. In its first year of competition, , the men finished sixth and the women finished eighth in the country. A year later, the men came in fifth and the women came in sixth. For the season, the women finished sixth and the men finished seventh. Last season, both the men and women placed third nationally. The men s basketball program is fully committed to the mission of the athletic program. In just five years as a basketball program, the program has averaged 20 wins a season, won the GCAA conference tournament in , played in the NJCAA National Tournament that same year, and made the conference tournament all four years eligible while being nationally ranked in numerous defensive categories. Equally important is the success of our student-athletes off the court. In the five years of the program s existence, 36 student athletes have moved on to continue their education at four-year institutions with 28 of those receiving basketball scholarships. Also over the past five years, 80 percent of our basketball players have graduated with an associate s degree before moving on. In the fall of 2014, the women s soccer team earned second place in the region, with nine players earning regional honors and one player earning national honors. The men s cross country team took second in the conference, and the women took fourth, with five total runners taking All-Conference honors. Men s basketball only lost one game all fall season. Softball and baseball had promising fall scrimmages, and SGSC Swim has ranked first, second, or third in all fall meets against junior colleges. Spring 2015 is an exciting time for SGSC athletics. South Georgia College is also the birthplace of college football legend Bobby Bowden s head coaching career. Coach Bowden s first job as a head coach was at SGC, where he served from 1955 to Bowden won three state championships in football and finished second once. He also coached the track and baseball teams. In 1957, Bowden won state titles in football, baseball, and track, while the basketball team, coached by the late Vince Gibson, finished fourth in the state. Coach Gibson later went on to serve as head coach of the football programs at Louisville, Kansas State, and Tulane. Coach Bowden amassed a record of at SGC. (The NCAA does not count his 22 wins as a Tiger toward his overall record.) 6 - SGSC Hawks Media Guide Swimming COACHES South Georgia State College C. M.
