COURSE DESCRIPTION COURSE OBJECTIVES AND STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR TERM 2 The course objectives for the subject Foreign Language Dutch have been subdivided into the four main language skills and is in accordance with the European Framework of Reference A0 - A1 level. Listening skills: Students can understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local area, employment). I Students can catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements. Reading skills: Students can read very short, simple texts. Students can find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus and timetables. Students can understand short, simple personal letters.
2 Speaking skills (interaction and production) Students can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities. I Students can handle very short social exchanges, even though the students can't usually understand enough to keep the conversation going theirself. Students can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. I Students can enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events). Students can use simple phrases and sentences to describe where they live and people they know. Students can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms my family and other people, living conditions, educational background and present or most recent job. Writing skills Students can write short, simple notes and messages relating to matters in areas of immediate need. Students can write a very simple personal letter, for example thanking someone for something. Additional materials are used, e.g. articles and quizzes from Dutch language news/websites like nu.nl, jufmelis.nl just to name a few. Reading book will be chosen from a collection of short stories, specialized for students learning Dutch as a foreign or second language. CDs from the method Zebra are used once a week for listening comprehension and/or DVDs. B. TEXTS AND OTHER RESOURCES Additional materials are used, e.g. articles and quizzes from Dutch language news/websites like nu.nl, jufmelis.nl just to name a few. Reading book will be chosen from a collection of short stories, specialized for students learning Dutch as a foreign or second language. CDs from the method Zebra are used once a week for listening comprehension and/or DVDs. C. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION The approach to instruction and presentation of material will vary depending on the topic and nature of content to be taught. The major methods of instruction to be utilized will be class lectures, group assignments, lab- assignments, visual aids and electronic audio-visual where appropriate and available.

COURSE POLICIES All graded assignments must be typed in black ink (normal size 12 font, Times New Roman or Arial) or neatly handwritten on loose-leaf paper unless otherwise indicated. Refer to the student handbook concerning academic dishonesty, plagiarism, late assignments and missed tests. An assignment is considered late if it is not submitted within the contact hour on the due date. Assignments submitted on disc or USB pens or via will not be accepted. Students are expected to be prepared for every class with their notebook and textbooks unless otherwise instructed. Students missing a test will be required to provide a medical document or a letter from their parent providing a valid explanation for the absence.
