1 Social Studies 30-1 Course Outline February 2016 Mr. G. Overguard Text: Perspectives on Ideology by Fielding et al. The main goal of Social Studies is for students to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and tools to become responsible active members of society. Social Studies takes a multidisciplined approach therefore the content of the course encompasses history, geography, economics, and social sciences. The principles of liberalism have played a significant role in the development of modern democratic societies. Developing a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of modern liberal thought and the tenets of competing ideologies is important in the development of active, informed and responsible citizens. This understanding will enable students to effectively investigate, analyze and evaluate government policies and actions and develop individual and collective responses to contemporary local, national and global issues.the overarching key issue for the entirety of the course shall be, To what extent should we embrace an ideology? Throughout the course, the following key questions will be used as a guide for study and will be revisited frequently: To what extent should ideology be the foundation of identity? To what extent is resistance to liberalism justified? To what extent are the principles of liberalism viable? To what extent should my actions as a citizen be shaped by an ideology? Students will be able to form critical and insightful answers to these questions upon successful completion of the Social Studies 30-1 course. 1

2 Based on the key questions listed above, the course will be divided into four major units of study. A fifth unit (*) will be covered but may be modified depending on time remaining for course review before the diploma exam. Please note that the following timeline is not meant to be exhaustive, comprehensive, or definitive. All timeframes are estimates and additional content not listed below will also be studied. Course Timeline Unit I: Identity and Ideology (2-3 weeks) Introduction: - Intro to Ideologies - Human nature: Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau Chapter 1: - Identities, Beliefs & Values - Influence of Media - Themes & Characteristics of Ideologies Chapter 2: - Individualism vs. Collectivism Unit II: The Origin and Growth of Liberalism (4-5 weeks) Chapter 3: - Origins of Classical Liberalism Chapter 4: - Industrial Revolution & Impacts of Classical Liberalism - Development of Socialism & Marxism - Evolution of Modern Liberalism - Keynesian Economics Chapter 6: - The Great Depression: Causes & Effects - Monetarism: Friedman, Thatcher, Reagan - Further Developments in Modern Liberalism Chapter 8: - Comparing Classical vs. Modern Liberalism - Neo-conservatism - Religion & Liberalism 2

3 Unit III: Challenging, Rejecting and Imposing Liberalism (3 weeks) Chapter 5: - Rise of Communism & the Soviet Union - Life Under Stalin - Rise of Nazi Germany - Fascism and Life in Nazi Germany Chapter 7: - The Cold War: Concepts, Events, and Ideologies Chapter 9: - Imposition of Liberalism on Aboriginals & First Nations - International Examples of Imposing Liberalism Unit IV: The Politics of Liberalism (4-5 weeks) Chapter 10: - Democratic Systems - Authoritarian Political Systems Chapter 11: - Individual Rights & Freedoms in a Democracy - Collective & Group Rights - Rejection of Liberalism in a Democracy: War Measures Act & Post-9/11 Chapter 12: - Viability of Liberalism - Contemporary Challenges to Liberalism Unit V: Ideology and Citizenship* Chapter 13: - Conceptions of Citizenship - Rights, Roles, and Responsibilities of Citizenship Chapter 14: - Active Citizenship for Change In addition to the material listed above, current events will also be discussed on a regular basis throughout the course. This will be done on an informal and often spontaneous schedule as events arise. Students are encouraged to raise issues for discussion and to ask questions about what they see, hear, and read from media and other sources. It is only through critical thought and analysis that our world can be understood, and questioning what is going on around you is the first step in that process. 3

4 Any students who experience difficulty at any time are urged to contact the teacher ASAP. My door is always open and THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS! This is a course you NEED for graduation DON T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP!!! Class Expectations Regular and timely attendance is expected and necessary for success in this course, furthermore the variety of discussions and information covered in class will be difficult to obtain outside of class. As a student of this class, you are a valuable resource to the class and just as you will be excited to learn from and share ideas with classmates, others will be eager to learn and share with you! ALL students are expected to respect the ideas and opinions of others. If you are absent, it is the student s job to find out what has been missed. The teacher will supply missed worksheets/assignments but it is the student s obligation to ask for missed materials. Students who miss exams and in-class essays must contact the teacher in advance or ASAP upon returning to the school in order to schedule a rewrite. Students are expected to come to every class prepared with a pen, notebook/paper, textbook, handouts and other materials passed out in class. It is a wise idea to have a Social Studies binder (or section) in which to keep all handouts/worksheets from the semester. Staying organized will aid the study process at the end of each unit and the course as a whole. CELL PHONES ARE NOT PERMITTED IN CLASS. They should be left in your locker during class time. You may NOT use a phone to listen to music; you must use another type of device. Healthy snacks and drinks are allowed in class as long as they do not become a distraction, if you abuse this privilege you will lose it. Digital music players are allowed in my class: only one ear bud is to be in at ALL times. During lecture/discussion NO ear buds are to be in. If you abuse this privilege you will lose it. You should only be listening to music during individual work time (when you are reading or completing an assignment). If you are late for class please enter the room quietly without causing a disruption. If the door is closed, please knock and wait to be let in. Assignments are to be completed in blue or black ink only or typed. Typed assignments MUST BE DOUBLE-SPACED. Typed assignments should also be prepared in a standard font such as Times New Roman or Arial, and be in font size 12. Please DO NOT SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS VIA unless you check with Mr. O first and/or are instructed to do so. 4

5 Assessment & Marking Classroom Mark: 70% Unit Exams 35% Essays 35% Assignments 20% Quizzes 10% Diploma Exam: 30% The government s diploma exam must count for 30% of the year s total grade. POLICY AROUND RE-WRITES AND EXAM/ESSAY GRADES In all of my classes, student marks on major essays and exams are final. There are no rewrites allowed after the fact. However, at the end of a course, all students' performance on major assessments is evaluated and IF there is found to be one outlying mark then that mark MAY be dropped, adjusted, or "curved" - AT THE TEACHER'S DISCRETION. Such adjustments are only made if the student is otherwise in good standing in terms of assignment completion, attendance, behaviour, and effort. An example would be if a student had written three major unit exams and received grades of 85%, 80%, and 55% - the 55 would be a clear outlier and may end up being omitted from the calculation of the student's final course grade. Plagiarism/cheating of any kind results in a grade of zero on the assessment in question. For the purposes of written work, plagiarism shall be constituted by an undeniable similarity or resemblance to the written work of another (in part or in whole) without proper citation. Due dates will be well-posted and must be met. Assignments not handed in on the due date will receive a grade of zero. Students may change this by handing in the assignment within one week of the due date. Assignments handed in later than one week from the due date will still be graded but will be awarded only ¾ of the mark they would normally receive. Acceptance of late assignments and marks awarded or subtracted is entirely at the teacher s discretion. Effort and participation are not explicitly marked but are expected and required in order to successfully meet the objectives of the course. Students putting less than full effort into assignments will not produce high quality work and will be graded accordingly. Homework will be necessary at times in order to cover all required material in the time allotted. In most cases students will have time in class to work to complete homework; however, students may be required to complete substantial amounts of reading outside of class time. Suggested timelines and due dates for completing course readings will be announced in class. Students who are experiencing difficulty are encouraged to take home their textbook, notes, and handouts on a daily basis for review. 5
