1 KAMEHAMEHA SECONDARY SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COURSE SUMMARY FOR ENGLISH TEN (Focus on Hawaiian, Pacific and World Literature) FOR: MR. OISHI SCHOOL YEAR OVERVIEW English 10 (Focus on Hawaiian, Pacific and World Literature) aligns itself to the goals and objectives of the English 10 program. This comparative English 10 literature program offers students the opportunity to continue and to reinforce their study, gained in the previous year, of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian literature produced by indigenous Hawaiian writers, including elements of world literature from Oceania (the Pacific Islands) and elsewhere. This course is designed for students who enjoy reading and writing and have developed good skills in those areas. Students will continue to expand their appreciation and understanding of 'Ike Hawai'i as they compare and contrast world literature from a variety of contextual perspectives. Students will develop a better understanding of how literature works, of grammar and usage, of vocabulary, and of effective writing. The student will: COURSE GOALS - read a variety of engaging literary selections by female and male authors of Hawaiian and non- Hawaiian ancestry from a variety of cultures and different time periods. - thoroughly read and comment upon all readings as assigned. Successful discussion, comprehension and meaningful participation depend upon careful completion and analyses of readings. - note recurring themes and perspectives related to 'Ike Hawai'i in assigned literary selections; - sharpen your ability to comprehend and discuss a variety of written perspectives, experiences and emotions as well as understanding the contextual significance of each reading assignment. - identify and define the elements of the short story and novel such as plot, setting, characterization, foreshadowing, conflict, point of view, theme, symbolism, and irony; - explore the characteristics and literary terms of drama through the study of Hawaiian, Pacific and world literatures; - identify various poetic devices and respond to the poet's intent; 1

2 - identify the author's main purpose in a nonfiction selection, provide evidence to support a generalization, distinguish between objective and subjective statements, distinguish between denotation and connotation, make inferences, and predict outcomes; - write effective description, literary analysis, and persuasion. - experience opportunities for creative expression which may include poetry, short stories, or drama. - select an appropriate topic for research, locate information, take notes, formulate a thesis, and write accurate bibliographies; - explore multicultural issues in literature; - improve grammar, mechanics, and sentence structure in writing; - improve knowledge and use of vocabulary words; - participate in literary discussion, inquiry, debate, and all performances; - share written work and participate in peer evaluation; - strive to maintain the highest ideals perpetuated in traditional and contemporary Hawaiian literature. Integration of Technology Kamehameha Schools provides access to many technological tools to enhance the teaching and learning process such as laptops, online resources, the KS Blog, BlackBoard, etc. We support the integration of technology as an critical component in preparing students to thrive in our global society. As appropriate to each course, teachers will provide further classroom expectations and guidelines as to the extent technology (e.g. laptops, websites, BlackBoard, etc) will be utilized for research, instruction, assessment, and communication purposes. The Tempest, No Fear Version Supplemental readings include fiction, non-fiction, poetry by a variety of Hawaiian, Pacific and world authors. 2

3 Supplies: Grade 10 Writing Portfolio (for new students, must be purchased through the school bookstore.) Ample supply of blue and/or black pens, pencils and folder paper One flash or thumb drive (minimum 512 MB) One highlighter One marble notebook STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Student responsibilities are very simple, and fall into two basic categories: Be prepared and be respectful. What does this mean in the classroom? Before learning can begin, one must be prepared to learn. As such, students will come to class PREPARED. This means: Being on time, ready, and seated before the bell rings. Cell phones and MP3 players should be put away before entering the classroom. They will be immediately taken away for the rest of the day. Laptops should be closed and stored under your desk, unless otherwise stated by the teacher. Using the restroom before class begins. (Policy: Students will be asked sign-in/out. If I notice abuse of this policy, it will negatively affect your participation grade) Bringing your textbook(s), pen, highlighter, pen, and laptop to class everyday. Only English materials should be on your desk! Maintaining a neat and organized workspace. Backpacks should be kept off your desk. A cluttered and disorganized workspace represents a cluttered and disorganized mind. Honoring deadlines. You cannot fully participate in class discussion or activities if you haven t prepared and finished your homework the night before. In order to create and maintain a safe learning environment, students will be RESPECTFUL at all times. This means: Being an active listener by giving your full and undivided attention to the speaker (whether myself or your classmate). Raising your hand and waiting your turn to speak. Coming to class with a positive attitude Respecting the viewpoints of others. 3

4 Consequences: Misbehavior will have an adverse effect on a student s class participation grade. Depending on the infraction, consequences may also include mandatory study help, a phone call to parents, or possible detention, as outlined in the Student Handbook. As a general rule, if I must stop class to address student behavior, I may ask the student to make up the cumulative class time wasted during study help (in other words, # of minutes wasted x students per class). GRADING POLICY Grades can be accessed via KS Connect at anytime The grade for each quarter is divided into four parts: 20% Class Participation and Preparation 40% Homework/class work/quizzes 20% Essay (1 major essay per quarter) 20% Final Project (1 per quarter) All assignments are expected to be done thoroughly and thoughtfully. The grade for each of the two quarters in the semester counts 40% and the final examination counts 20% of the overall semester grade. Note: Class Participation and Preparation make up a significant portion of your grade. I will frequently ask for volunteers to share their insights and mana o, so it s important to be prepared, and to make a concerted effort to participate. This portion of your grade will be graded holistically, taking into consideration my observations, as well as a self-reflection assignment that you will complete at the end of the quarter. If you are an active listener and make a concerted effort to participate thoughtfully and consistently, you ll do just fine. KS Blog: We will use our class blog as a place to reflect on the readings and organize our thoughts before class discussion. We will also use it as a place to engage with and respond to the ideas of your fellow classmates, and to learn from each other. The web addresses are as follows: Blog Address: Note: When hard copies of an assignment are due, please turn them into the blue box. Late Work Policy: Homework assignments must be submitted on the announced due date. Late work will not be accepted. All blog assignments must be completed by 12 pm the night before the assignment is due. This will allow your peers and I to review posts prior to class. 4

5 Unless otherwise stated, hard copies of assignments will be due at the start of class. Print out typed assignments before class begins. Any work that is still printing out after the bell rings will be considered late. For major assignments such as essays and final projects, there will be a reduction of 10% of the possible points available for the assignment every day the assignment is late, i.e. a 100 point assignment would lost 10 points per day it is late, until no points are possible. For example: paper due on Monday turned in on Wednesday earns an 82% -- the official grade will be a 62% Absences: When students are absent, they are responsible for finding out about missing work. If you miss a quiz, it is your responsibility to come and see me to make it up. Students are expected to meet with the teacher for study help on the day of their return to receive instructions on missed homework assignments. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a serious academic offense. Plagiarism is not only the copying the exact words from another person s works, but the borrowing of ideas without giving credit through proper citation. Consequences for plagiarism will result in an automatic 0 for the assignment, and may result in additional consequences. Study Help: If you need additional help with an assignment, please feel free to arrange an appointment with me. I am usually available after school till about 4 pm, except for Mondays when I have department meetings. On an as needed basis, I may require students to attend mandatory study help sessions, either individually or in groups. I may also refer students who consistently do not complete assignments to the Student Support Center for additional assistance.
