The position is also responsible to strengthen the Financial Planning and Analysis function, execute process improvements and strategic initiatives as directed by the Executive team. The position holder will also play a key role in the provision of financial and business management information and support to the CFO and other Executive, Clinical Directors, the CEO and the various Sub- Committees of the Board. Macquarie University Hospital is Australia s first and only private not-for-profit teaching hospital located on a University campus. 2 Key Responsibilities of the Role Leadership Provide leadership to finance team through effective objective setting, delegation and communication. Partner with the executive staff to drive business insight and strengthen the FP&A function for the company and business units. Technical Skills and Application Drive ongoing system development of business intelligence and budgeting tools to meet the company s financial reporting and analysis requirements Ensures that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory and hospital policies and procedures Ensure that policies are in accordance with evolving regulations, legal requirements and industry trends Financial Accounting and Reporting Ensures accurate internal and external recording and reporting of financial transactions. Management and Finance/Board reports (working closely with the CFO and other Finance staff) including but not limited to the Operating Statement, Balance Sheet, Operating Result and Cashflow Forecast and KPI schedule, including associated written analysis required for these reports Review quarterly and yearly Financial Reports as required by Accounting Standards and government regulations (including DEEWR) Cash flow reporting and forecasting Co-ordinate both internal and external audit activities and ensure audit recommendations are implemented within the agreed timeframes Ensure that accounting records and reports are in accordance with Accounting Standards and government regulations Financial Planning and Analysis Review of month end close for operating results of the businesses, analyzing results to current estimate, budget, and historical results. Provide relevant documentation of variances through monthly business review process Drive processes for long term strategic plans, annual budgets, forecasts, month end close, budget to actual reporting and analysis and quarterly and monthly business reviews Development and Ownership of end to end financial information and control systems, including BI tools, general ledger, budgeting, forecasting, cost allocation and other subsystems Provide financial modeling, financial analysis, and valuation support for new and existing service areas, long-term contracts and other ad-hoc projects Page 2 of 6

3 Customer Service Ensure that the hospital s professional reputation is maintained. Personal and Staff Development Continually develops both personally and professionally to meet the changing needs of career and industry Oversee hiring and succession planning for the Finance Department. Assess staffing requirements and fills open positions with suitable candidates Train, direct and coordinate personnel. Ensure that training development needs are met and providing assistance and support as needed Conduct performance appraisals as assigned. Provide measurable feedback to Finance personnel and suggestions for improved performance. Formulate and implement personnel corrective actions as needed. Teamwork and Communication Participates in establishing and implementing major hospital and departmental goals and objectives Assist in the development of short and long term objectives for the Finance Department Coordinate accounting functions with other departments. Interfacing with the IT Department in the development and implementation of efficient systems consistent with new software applications. Continuous Improvement Implements and monitors department policies and procedures and recommends improvements, consults with relevant Finance staff and members of the Executive Ensure effective financial internal controls for the department and the hospital. Continually evaluate established policies and procedures, updating them as necessary. Page 3 of 6

5 Objectives and Performance Measures Delivery of a robust FP&A function Increase management s confidence in the integrity of data Accurate and timely preparation of year-end financial statements and analyses Supervise the month end accounting/reconciliation process with minimum surprises Assist the CFO in periodical financial and performance reviews of hospital operations, including identifying effective revenue generation, cost saving and service enhancement strategies as relevant Positive contribution to the finance team through the delivery of timely and reliable services and willingness to co-operate with and support core team members Skills and Competencies CPA or ACA (or equivalent) qualifications Demonstrated financial acumen Strong analytical and problem solving skills Demonstrated experience in implementing Business Intelligence and budgeting tools Ability to identify issues independently and initiate improvements to processes or procedures Know how to apply technology in pursuit of the aims of the role Significant experience and demonstrated achievements in accounting and/or audit management Strong IT skills Supervisory experience Experience in the use of a complex computerised accounting or enterprise information systems Experience in the preparation and review of external and internal financial reports Experience in the preparation and review of budgets Demonstrated leadership and people management skills Attention to detail Strong interpersonal skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Be respectful of the needs of patients, visitors and other staff and maintain a professional approach to all interactions.
