3 Introduction This distance learning masters programme provides students with an insight into the role of technology management within the Irish and international economy. The programme aims to develop students knowledge of product innovation, technology transfer and research & development (R&D) processes thus enabling them and their companies to gain competitive advantage through technology. The programme is offered under the auspices of the Atlantic University Alliance (AUA), which is a collaborative agreement between University College Cork, University of Limerick and NUI Galway and involves all three Universities working on a number of joint projects in the area of training, education and R&D. The programme is the first tri-university collaboration on an academic postgraduate programme in Ireland. 5 Aims The programme aims to... Develop knowledge and understanding of the increasingly important area of technology management Build the management and leadership capabilities of companies and individuals in this area Enable graduates to facilitate organisational change and sustainable improvements at the enterprise level through competitive work systems and effective knowledge management In order to achieve these aims, module assignments and the final year thesis will be company-based to enhance their benefit to the company and to the student. 6 Structure The programme is offered over 2 years (4 semesters) on a part-time basis. Students will have a formal assessment at the end of each semester and will be required to produce a thesis based on a project carried out within their company. 7 Delivery The programme is delivered using a blended approach, that is, a combination of distance/online materials combined with face-to-face tutorials and seminars. The online element facilitates the learning in tandem with the distance-education, hardcopy materials and periodic classroom contact. The blended approach contains the following elements: Traditional distance education format - text based course material, face-to-face study groups and expert seminars scheduled during each semester. Online learning system available 24/7 containing: Module Content - module material in a downloadable format, easily readable off-line; Module Documents material related to the study of each module such as study schedules, powerpoint slides and case studies; Library online catalogue searches, downloadable journal articles, access to electronic databases; Examination and Assessment: - Sample Exam Papers - Assignments - Self Assessment Questions and Answers; E-Tutor support- available for each programme module. 10 FAQs Who is the programme intended for? A wide range of career opportunities are open to graduates of the programme in areas such as research and development, production and operations management, information systems and management consultancy. The programme is suited to a variety of industry sectors including Services, Biotechnology, Manufacturing, Healthcare and the Public Sector. Do I need a technical background to get the most from the programme? No, the programme will address the capabilities of the students in the strategic issues around technology management and innovation. It will not get into the application detail of technical issues. Graduates of the programme will gain an understanding of the strategic implications of technical, financial or licensing decisions, without having to be engineers, financiers, or patent lawyers. How much study time is involved in the programme? Students should allow hours per week, on average. The length of study per module will depend on a student s prior familiarity with the course material and the period of absence from formal study. Students should also allow one Saturday a month for the face-to-face tutorials and expert seminars held during term time. Do I need a PC? Students will require a PC and Internet access to be able to participate fully in the programme. Students should have as a minimum a 56K modem. Students who wish to access the University library databases from work will need to make arrangements with their employers to have firewall restrictions (if in existence), modified to facilitate this. Where do courses take place? Tutorials, seminars and end of semester exams will take place at a number of locations including NUI Galway, UL, UCC, Dublin and other locations to accommodate the geographical location of students.

11 What are the entry requirements? Applicants will be expected to hold a Primary Honours Degree or equivalent, and have at least 3 years work experience. In certain circumstances applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements may be admitted to the programme upon the successful completion of an interview. What are the fees? 7,500 each year for two years. The fee includes registration, exam & tutor fees, course material and meals & refreshments during seminars held at the distance education locations. This programme is approved by Enterprise Ireland for assistance under the Innovation Management Initiative. Participation fees of eligible companies may be subsidised by Enterprise Ireland at a rate of 70% for SMEs and 50% for non-smes. Eligible companies are those from manufacturing or internationally traded services sectors, who are clients of Enterprise Ireland, Shannon Development, Údarás na Gaeltachta, IDA Ireland or the City and County Enterprise Boards. The subvention form is included in the application form.
