7 Pre 2013 Water Monitoring Network - CVC relied on Water Survey of Canada (WSC) monitoring network Other partner organizations who contributed data are: Other CAs (TRCA, Halton, GRCA) Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) Upper Tier Municipalities (Region of Peel) Lower Tier Municipalities (City of Brampton, City of Mississauga) Ontario Ministry of Environment
8 CVC Monitoring Network 2013 and beyond Region of Peel invested ~ $2 million to build Real-time gauging and flood watch/warning system CVC operates extensive monitoring network. 16 rainfall gauges (CVC) 14 rainfall gauges (City of Mississauga) 10 rainfall gauges (Region of Peel) 27 stream flow gauges (CVC) + 10 WSC stream flow gauges 5 climate stations The monitoring network will become an integral part of CVC s flood forecasting and warning system and will become a valuable tool to measure and report on watershed health.

14 Data Management Software WISKI (Water Information System-Kisters) WISKI software and database system is currently hosted within Region of Peel Network. Soda system Alarm Manager Biber, Sked, and Water Quality Modules Wiski Web Pro GIS Graphic Modules This software and database system is currently in use at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Stream Forecast Centre and at several other Conservation Authorities. This provides CVC with an opportunity to leverage work that has already been done and to partner with the Province and other Conservation Authorities to implement a more cohesive solution
15 Updated Floodplain Mapping and Modelling Consultant proposals received and currently under review for: Clearview, Avonhead, Lakeside, Turtle, Birchwood, Lornewood, Moore, Cumberland, Tecumseh, Cawthra, Serson and Applewood creeks Extensive Survey Work Separate RFP to update flood lines for Cooksville Creek to be issued in November RFP to evaluate climate change vulnerability and sensitivity across southeast Mississauga planned for 2014
16 July 8th Storm Extreme rainfall, prolonged power outages, transit delays, flooded highways and streets Extensive basement flooding in parts of Mississauga and Toronto Bank erosion damages in affected watercourses $850+ million in property damages Impacts more widespread and severe than Aug 4, 2009 Cooksville flood event

22 Future Directions Hydrometeorological Monitoring Network Gauge network will be operated in near real-time mode to provide rapid response to significant events. Rainfall gauges will be operated year round Import of all historic metrological data into WISKI system Access of rainfall and other hydrometric data to municipal partners and various stakeholders in the watershed Standardized data storage and retrieval system Rapid evaluation and response system to significant findings Processing data as soon as possible (i.e. automatic QA/QC) Weekly/monthly report Web-Pro integration Enable remote access to partner organizations Enhance flood forecasting communications available on CVC website Enhanced CVC s flood forecasting and warning capabilities to assist municipal partners Flood forecasting models GIS & IWMP monitoring integration GIS & IWMP monitoring integration
