College Credit Plus A GUIDE FOR STUDENTS College Credit Plus (CCP) is a statewide program that provides an opportunity for qualified high school students to take college courses for both high school and college credit, at no cost to the student. CCP replaces Ohio s Post- Secondary Enrollment Options program (PSEO) and all alternative programs including Dual Enrollment. CCP is designed to promote rigorous academic pursuits and provide a wide variety of options to college- ready students. It is open to students in grades To participate, a high school student must apply for admission to a public community college, college, university, or participating private college. Admission will be based on the student s college- readiness in one or more subject areas (determined by standardized test scores, high school grades in specific courses and high school teacher recommendations). At Cincinnati State, qualified high school students may take courses through any of the following delivery formats: In the high school classroom, in traditional classes held during the school day, taught by a high school teacher who has been approved to teach the Cincinnati State course. (Subject to availability at partner high schools.) At any Cincinnati State campus location course sections taught by Cincinnati State faculty at the Clifton campus, Cincinnati State West in Harrison, or the Cincinnati State Middletown campus. Online, through courses taught by Cincinnati State faculty and accessed through the Cincinnati State Blackboard Learning Management System. (Requires participation first in an introductory online orientation session.) A CCP student who successfully completes such a course will have college credit placed on a transcript at Cincinnati State and corresponding high school credit applied toward high school graduation. Upon graduation from high school, the student would have the option of applying their credits toward a certificate or associate degree at Cincinnati State or applying to transfer them to another college or university. Benefits of College Credit Plus Students who participate in College Credit Plus enjoy a range of benefits. The CCP program:
Allows students to earn simultaneous high school and transcripted college credits at no cost to themselves or their families. Accelerates a student s college career and provides quality, affordable education close to home. Provides students with an enhanced range of course options Includes, at most institutions, courses that are in the Ohio Transfer Module (OTM), which guarantees these credits transfer to other public Ohio colleges and universities. Lowers the overall cost of post- secondary education, by reducing the time needed to complete a college degree. Introduces the rigor and expectations of college work. Can reduce or eliminate overlapping coursework between high school and college, and in some instances will allow them to complete college general education requirements. Results, at Cincinnati State, in the assignment of all CCP students to an advisor who assists them with scheduling and topics related to student success. All CCP students have access to the same student support services provided to fully matriculated students. Weights CCP courses the same as AP and IB courses. Risks of College Credit Plus Students considering College Credit Plus should be aware of several potential risks that might impact decisions to participate. Although credits earned with a grade of D or better in Ohio Transfer Module courses are guaranteed transfer to all public colleges and universities in Ohio, how they transfer may differ depending on the major. Students should check with institutions of interest regarding transfer policies prior to CCP enrollment. College transfer credits earned through CCP are generally accepted by most major institutions. However, credits are not always guaranteed for transfer toward private or out- of- state institutions. Students should check with institutions of interest regarding transfer prior to CCP enrollment. Grades received through CCP are reflected twice on college and high school transcripts. On both transcripts grades will affect respective GPAs. Low grades can negatively impact potential college admissions and financial aid opportunities. Students taking CCP courses on campus are responsible for arranging transportation. Students can be liable for fees if they do not follow the college or university s specific policies regarding late registration, dropping and withdrawing from classes, etc. Students will be given
this information during mandatory CCP Orientation sessions at the participating college or university. If a student fails or drops a course late in the semester, the student may be required to reimburse the local school district for the costs associated with course participation. The grade earned in the college course remains a part of a permanent academic record at the college and negatively impact a student s status as a first time freshman at their chosen college. The college schedule will be followed when enrolled in college courses on campus or online and therefore students need to work their schedules around these college expectations. Students enrolled in college courses on campus tend to be older and course content may be deemed appropriate for a more mature student audience. Frequently Asked Questions The Ohio Board of Regents has provided a valuable Frequently Asked Questions tool to aid students and families in understanding CCP opportunities. 5 Student Eligibility Students in grades 7-12 can apply for College Credit Plus. Cincinnati State will admit you based on your college- readiness in one or more subject areas. Your school counselor can help you understand the available options, deadlines, and how to proceed. You may not participate in the College Credit Plus program beyond your anticipated high school graduation date. To be accepted and enroll in courses for CCP, students must meet one of the following requirements for each of the subject areas: English & Social Sciences: Successful completion of two units of College Prep English/ Language Arts with a minimum of a B average and the high school s recommendation, OR An ACT sub- score of 18 in English and 21 in Reading, or score college ready on COMPASS Math & Science: Successful completion of Algebra II or its equivalent with a minimum of a B average and the high school s recommendation, OR An ACT sub- score of 22 in Math, or score college ready on COMPASS Technical Courses: Other requirements may be identified specific to each course. NOTE: Some courses have other specialized pre- requisite requirements that will be indicated in the course description information. Course Enrollment Limitations The formula for determining credit hours that a student may take at the college is as follows: Take the number of secondary units scheduled by the secondary school for which the student receives only secondary school credit, then multiply that number by three and then subtract the result from thirty. The resulting number shall be the total number of college credits a student participant may earn under CCP in an academic year. The maximum number of CCP credits a student may earn in an academic year is 30 semester credit hours.
CCP Application for Admission Application Deadlines for CCP Students: Cincinnati State Technical and Community College College Credit Plus Application for Admission Instructions For Fall Semester Enrollment - Cincinnati State requires that all CCP application materials (including appropriate test scores) be submitted by May 15 of that year. Submission of the application includes a high school transcript and qualifying ACT, SAT, COMPASS, Accuplacer or other equivalent scores. Step 5: Complete the course registration process (either online or by paper registration) by the stated deadlines associated with each semester as directed by your CCP Advisor. If registering for an online course, a mandatory How to Take an Online Course Workshop will be required before the semester begins. Step 6: Obtain all required textbooks and study materials prior to the first day.
Advising CCP students are required to work closely with their secondary school guidance counselors and Cincinnati State CCP representatives throughout this program. Students are assigned academic advisors who will assist them in understanding the rules and regulations of both CCP and the college. Academic advisors will guide students though activities, such as setting academic goals, addressing academic challenges and making appropriate referrals to campus support services. An academic advisor will determine if the student has met course prerequisites by reviewing a student's ACT scores, COMPASS placement scores, advanced placement scores and/or high school transcript. All CCP students will meet their academic advisors at the CCP Orientation. For further information about accessing Advising for CCP students, please contact: ccpadvising@cincinnatistate.edu Student Code of Conduct Cincinnati State Technical and Community College students who take college courses as part of College Credit Plus are bound by the same Student Code of Conduct policies applicable to all students. CCP students are expected to be familiar with the student Code of Conduct which can be found here: CODE OF CONDUCT
