3 Rack-Munting Instructins These instructins describe hw t install the Spectra ntier500 r ntier500 VTL (the ntier appliance) in a standard 19-inch, fur-pst rack. D nt install the data drives until after the rack-munting prcedure is cmpleted. Befre Yu Begin Perfrm these tasks, btain these items, and nte the warnings: Identify the lcatin where yu will install the Spectra ntier appliance. Assemble the rack, if necessary. Obtain the fllwing tls and equipment: #2 Phillips screwdriver, magnetic if available Measuring tape (recmmended) Level (recmmended) Ensure Rack Stability Warning Warning Warning The rails prvided with the library are designed fr a standard 4-pst 19-inch (48 cm) rack. If yu are nt installing any ther equipment in the rack, install the Spectra ntier appliance near the bttm f the rack t prevent the rack frm being tp-heavy. Install stabilizing feet n the rack. In multiple-rack installatins, secure racks tgether. Extend nly ne rack cmpnent at a time. Racks may becme unstable if mre than ne cmpnent is extended. INSTALL THE RAILS Each rail assembly cnsists f an inner slider that is attached t the ntier appliance and an uter rail that is attached t the rack. Prepare the Rails Disassemble the rail assemblies. 1. Extend the slider frm the uter rail until the safety latch is visible, as shwn in Figure 1. Pull the slider cmpletely ut f the uter rail. 4. Repeat steps 1 3 fr the secnd rail assembly. Spectra ntier500 and ntier500 VTL 5

6 Install the Sliders n the Chassis 1. Remve the ntier appliance frm its bag and place it n a sturdy wrk surface where yu can reach bth sides f the chassis. Having tw peple fr this task simplifies lifting and mving the chassis. 2. Psitin a slider against ne side f the chassis with the latch tward the rear f the chassis and pinting tward the frnt f the chassis. Make sure the safety latch is tward the utside. Slide the end f the slider (furthest frm the latch) under the tab near the frnt f the chassis s that the tab fits int the ntch n the end f the slider. 7 4. Psitin the slider s that the three hles circled in Figure 9 align with the hles in the side f the chassis. 5. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver t install a screw frm bag 1 int each hle, securing the slider t the chassis. Tighten the screws snugly. Nte: If yu cannt align the three hles circled in Figure 9 with the hles in the chassis, use the ther screw hles in the slider t install the screws. Yu nly need three screws t attach the slider t the chassis. Screws Figure 4 Attach the slider t the chassis. 6. Repeat Steps 2 thrugh 5 t attach the secnd slider t the ther side f the chassis. Adjust the Length f the Outer Rails Imprtant The length f the rails must be adjusted befre they are attached t the rack. 1. If necessary, lsen the screws attaching the extender t the uter rail s that yu can adjust the length f the rail. See Figure 10 t see a clse-up f the rail with the extender attached. 8 3. Adjust the psitin f the extender s that the assembled rail just fits in the inside distance frm the frnt munting hles f yur rack t the back munting hles. Nte: Using a measuring tape simplifies determining the length required fr the rails t fit inside the rack. 4. Tighten the fur screws hlding the extender t the rail. 5. Repeat Steps 1 thrugh 4 fr the ther rail. Install the Outer Rails in the Rack 1. Examine the munting hles in yur rack and select the set f nut plates and screws (either bag 2 r bag 3 in the rack kit) that best match these hles. 2. Determine where t install the nut plates n the rack. The plates must be psitined t prvide at least 2 inches f clearance belw the bttm edge f the plate. 3. Psitin a nut plate behind ne rack pst at the desired psitin, then use a #2 Phillips screwdriver t screw three ½-inch screws int the plate, as shwn in Figure 11. Repeat Step 3 t install the nut plates n the each f the ther three psts f the rack. Nte: Make sure that the nut plates are installed at the same level n all fur psts. Otherwise the rails will nt be level when they are installed. Using a level simplifies psitining the nut plates s that the rails will be level. 8 Rack-Munting Instructins

9 5. Fit the tabs n ne rail extender between the nut plate and ne f the back rack legs. Then, fit the frnt tabs n the rail between the nut plate and crrespnding legs n the frnt f the rack. Tighten all three screws t secure the nut plate t the rack. Tabs Tabs (behind pst) Rear Figure 7 Insert the rail tabs between the nut plate and the rack. Frnt 6. Repeat Step 5 t attach the secnd uter rail t the rack. Set aside any leftver screws and parts. 7. On the frnt f the rack, attach tw clip nuts (bag 4 in the rack kit), t each leg. Place ne abve and anther belw the rails, with ne empty hle separating each clip nut frm the nut plate munting screws, as shwn in Figure 13. 10 INSTALL THE NTIER APPLIANCE INTO THE RACK Warning The ntier appliance weighs apprximately 54 lb. (25 kg) withut drives installed. Use extreme cautin when mving it. Lift the ntier appliance and slide it nt the rails in the rack until the munting ears n the frnt f the chassis fit against the rack, with the munting ear screw hles directly ver the clip nut hles (see Figure 9). 11 2. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver t install the tw clip nut screws in each munting ear t secure the chassis t the rack.
