1 Cleveland Section, District 10 Chartered in 1921, Over 700 members t Cleveland Welding School Offers 12-Month Program Tour Ohio Technical College Tuesday, May 13, 2014 The car license plates from states across the United States indicate the draw of welding training at the Ohio Technical College (OTC), the host for the Cleveland Section May 13 meeting. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. with Coyne Catering serving shortly after. There is parking at 1374 E 51 st Street, Cleveland, OH That is west of East 55 St., north of Superior Ave. Then look for the entrance signs to the School of Welding. The school s web site has a map, or call At this meeting, AWS members and guests -- from those needing more training to high school graduates and instructors -- can evaluate the potential for welding training at OTC. A comprehensive 12-month Master Welding Technology program that began in 2009 provides time for students to develop skills for welding careers. Students takes classes in welding technology, blueprint reading, oxyacetylene welding Reservations Requested By May 8: Call Mary Alice Beck, , or , MaryAlice_Beck@lincoln electric.com. We need an accurate head count to insure meals for everyone. P.O. Box 479 Grand River, OH and cutting, plasma-arc and air carbon-arc cutting, and shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and gas metal arc welding in all positions and with pipe. Lincoln Electric supplied the welding equipment and consumables for the School of Welding Technology labs. The OTC program includes career placement services, career fairs, on-site recruiting visits, and part-time job assistance. Ohio Technical College began as Ohio Diesel Mechanics School in 1969 on the second floor of a building in Cleveland s Warehouse district. The school stared with a six-week course in Cummins and Detroit engines, and basic diesel fundamentals. During 1994, the school earned the degree-granting ability to offer an Associate of Technical Studies in Automotive and Diesel program. It combines technical skills with academic credentials to help graduates move into management positions. Can You Still Hear the Whistle Blowing? The Midwest Railway Preservation Society (MRPS) hosted a great tour of their workshop in the historic B&O Roundhouse on West 3 rd Street in Cleveland s industrial Flats district for our April meeting.
2 More than 30 AWS members, friends, and sons had a chance to look, feel, and ask questions about some of the 20 pieces of vintage rolling stock, including the 1918 USRA light Mikado (2-8-2) 4070 steam locomotive under restoration as an operating steam locomotive to once again pull excursions through the Cuyahoga Valley. Attendees learned about the "Mount Baxter," an original, elegant parlor coach from the 1930's, that, with the 4070, TriStar Pictures used for filming of the movie "The Natural" with Robert Redford. They saw work in progress on the restoration of the roundhouse, built between , and the machine and wood shops, after a fine meal from Coyne Catering with elegant dinning among car trucks, tools, steam engine parts, and welding equipment. Some attendees took the opportunity to sign on for a work detail or suggest how to remake, redesign and fabricate the things that cannot be bought. Or, become a MRPS member. For another chance to touch and see train equipment up close, MRPS welcomes visitors to Saturday open houses on from noon to 4 p.m. on May 10, September 13, October 11, and November 29. Check out the web site for the photo gallery, videos, tours, and open house schedules, and for the Google Maps directions to the Historic B&O Roundhouse. As with most shops, wear proper safety clothes for the roundhouse tour. The Historic B&O Roundhouse is located at 2800 W. 3rd St. in the Flats. Three Executive Committee Members were elected for one, two, and three year terms: Dan Harrison one year, Richard Harris two years, and Bob Gardner three years. All current Cleveland Section AWS members can run for these offices. Meet the new officer for the Cleveland Section. Johnny Napier, a seven year AWS member, will step up as Second Vice Chairman for the coming year. Johnny served four years in the United States Navy on board the USS Roosevelt and USS Nimitz as a hydraulic mechanic for F4 Phantoms and F14 Tomcats and graduated classes in the mechanical and electronic fields. He also is a graduate of Ohio Apprenticeship in the Mechanical electronic instrumentation field and the three-year National Aeronautics and Space Administration Apprenticeship in the mechanical electronic instrumentation field. Johnny retired from NASA Glenn Research Center 2012, where he served as a Senior Journeyman in the Instrumentation Engineering Technical field and notched more than 30 years of experience in welding, mechanical, electronic, and machining. He currently teaches welding classes at the Polaris Career Center in Middleburg Heights where he also taught classes in Metallurgy and Introduction to Construction and Maintenance. He has been a member of AWS School Excelling through National Skills Standards Education ((SENSE) for 3 years The section operates with a number of volunteer committees, from the annual auction to monthly programs and publicity. Many of these openings only require one to three hours of your time each month. Ask one of the officers above how your interests can increase the value of membership in the Cleveland Section. In Memory of Earl Lipphardt

The Sacha Award helps develop welding skills for students pursuing a post secondary degree in a welding related program. The Buck and Sacha students will attend the Lincoln Electric Welding School. Plus these local scholarships, the AWS Foundation offers district and national scholarships. It has awarded more than $5.3 million in scholarships since Details and applications are available at For details contact our Scholarship Chairman, Bob Gardner at ([email protected]).
