8 Cnfigure authenticatin Each tl requires a valid Windws user accunt r SQL Server lgin credentials t cnnect t yur SQL Server instances and databases. By default, the SQL admin tlset uses the credentials f yur currently lgged-n Windws accunt. Yu can cnfigure the authenticatin methd and credentials in the fllwing ways: When using any tl, click the user access ( ) icn. When managing a server grup, click Set Server Credentials. These ptins let yu enfrce authenticatin standards and crprate security plicies acrss yur server grups while prviding the ability t use alternate credentials n an ad-hc basis t address specific cnnectin needs. Manage license SQL admin tlset requires a license fr each cmputer n which it is installed. By default, SQL admin tlset installs with a limited-time trial license key. Each time yu start the tl, SQL admin tlset checks fr a valid license. A valid license is a trial r prductin key that is registered fr the cmputer n which yu installed SQL admin tlset. If yur license expires, such as when the trial perid ends, r if yur license is deactivated, yu can n lnger use the tl. Yu can re-install the tl and reuse a previusly deactivated prductin key. Yu can view and update yur current license key using the licensing cnsle. 9 Yu can purchase a new license nline ( Manage server grups The Manage Server Grups windw helps yu rganize access t yur SQL Server instances s yu can fully leverage the scpe and pwer f the SQL admin tlset tls. A server grup can cntain multiple instances, whether these instances are hsted n the same cmputer r n different cmputers. When yu create a server grup, yu specify a single set f credentials that the SQL admin tlset uses t cnnect t each instance in the grup. When yu use ne f the SQL admin tlset tls, yu can specify which SQL Server instances yu want t act n. Chsing a server grup allws yu t act n multiple instances that have a lgical relatinship. Fr example, yu culd create a server grup that cntains all the SQL Server instances that hst accunting databases. Then, when yu launch the Backup Status tl, yu can simply specify the Accunting server grup t check the backup status f all the instances in this grup, n matter where they are lcated in yur enterprise. Manage yur server grups t: Create a server grup Change grup memberships by adding r remving instances Set the SQL Server cnnectin credentials t use when a tl accesses an instance in this grup Rename an existing server grup Delete a server grup TIP When yu first launch the SQL admin tlset, it lads any server grups previusly defined thrugh SQL Server Management Studi (2005 and 2008) r Enterprise Manager (2000). After the initial imprt, yu can use the Manage Server Grups tl t perfrm all management f the server grups. If yu select a nested server grup when running ne f SQL admin tlset tls, the tl acts n all the instances belnging t the selected server grup as well as any instances belnging t the child server grups. Using ur previus example, when yu select the HR server grup, the tl acts n the instances belnging t the Chicag, Hustn, and Lndn server grups.

Yu can edit these ptins frm any tl in the tlset, and immediately apply them every tl.the fllwing ptins are available: Cnnectin Timeut Cntrls the amunt f time in secnds befre a cnnectin attempt t a targeted SQL Server instance fails with a timeut errr. If yu are experiencing timeut errrs while using the tls, yu may have a slw netwrk cnnectin r a busy SQL Server, and may need t increase this value. By default, the SQL admin tlset uses a cnnectin timeut f 30 secnds. Cmmand Timeut Cntrls hw lng a tl shuld wait in secnds fr a cmmand against a targeted SQL Server instance t cmplete. If yu are experiencing timeut errrs while using the tls, yu may have a slw netwrk cnnectin r a busy SQL Server, and may need t increase this value. Backup Status The Backup Status tl mnitrs yur SQL Server backup status, helping t make sure that yu back up yur SQL Servers n a regular basis. By default, Backup Status cnnects t the specified SQL Server instance using the credentials f yur currently lgged n Windws accunt, and then cllects infrmatin abut backups perfrmed n the hsted databases. The Backup Status tl helps yu: Identify any nn-backed up databases. Determine databases nt backed up within the last x days. View the last backup time stamp fr each database. Drill int the cmplete backup histry fr a specific database. View backup histry acrss multiple SQL Server instances r a server grup. Save the backup histry. If the tl returns unexpected results, check the grm settings n the SQL Server instance. On the Add Server windw, type the name f each instance, separating multiple instances with semiclns. c. Specify the type f authenticatin yu want Server Ping t use t cnnect t the specified instances.
