8 Progetto MATS obbiettivi e approccio tecnico/scientifico Electric Power 1,0 MW el Outlet Thermal Power 4,0 MW th Inlet Thermal Power 5,7 MW th Desalting Unit Type MED Capacity 250 m 3 per day Developing innovative subsystems and demonstrating a 1 MW multi generative CSP plant with the following features (3 degrees of flexibility): dispatch flexibility: by an innovative and compact thermal energy storage system output service flexibility: co generation of electric power, demineralized water, air conditioning for buildings, depending on the local/seasonal/instantaneous demand input power source flexibility: solar power is integrated with a gas back up source (e.g. biomass or NG) to ensure continuous and stable power production

11 Progetto MATS attività e risultati conseguiti Major achievements, to date (RTD/DEM): All key components (reflective panels, solar absorbers, etc.) characterized in lb laboratory, including ageing Innovative solar tracking system developed New 100 m collector installed at ENEA Casaccia New steam generator prototype (300 kw) positively tested Physical chemical properties of the heat transfer fluid determined in laboratory tests Innovative back up heater designed Innovative operation strategies for the desalination unit coupled to the system conceived 3 patent applications produced to date Special UPS installed on the heat storage system Technology transfer from research to industrial partners achieved during the 1 st phase All Demo plant components identified and designed Co generative operation strategies developed Technical/economical optimization of the basic design allowed > 30% cost reduction.
