Seminar "Mastering Uncertainty in Advanced Geo-Hazard Engineering" May 27th, 2014 in Brussels 2014 to Present Members:Didier De Buyst, Jozef Van Dyck, Dirk Roosendans Top professors from ULB, ULg, KULeuven and Princeton University will give lectures on geo-hazard engineering related to seismic movements, shale gas extraction, off-shore projects and levees. There will also be a debate with top engineers from industry. This seminar is intended for engineers (academic and industrial), safety consultants, risk managers, company directors, project managers, insurance underwriters, insurance brokers, loss adjusters, surveyors etc. involved in large scale engineering/industrial projects with geo-hazard risks. Master Class "Creating Value during Business Conflict Resolution" (Dutch edition) in September-October to Present Members:Didier De Buyst, Willem Meuwissen, Willy Geysen, Theo De Beir The aim of this Master Class (Dutch edition) is to give a theoretical and practical background in how to handle business conflicts and to efficiently and optimally reach a settlement and to create value on top. The Master Class is intended for directors and officers, general managers, in-house counsels, court experts, loss adjusters, insurance broker, accountants, CPA s, mediators, lawyers, etc.. 10 Members:Didier De Buyst, Jozef Van Dyck, Dirk Roosendans, Gert Van den Eynde Our first public initiative of the inter-university platform is the seminar Mastering Uncertainty in Engineering on November 4th, 2013 at SCK CEN in Mol (Belgium) from 9 AM till 5 PM, with a Meet & Greet between academia and industry. This is a joint initiative of SCK.CEN, ie-net and Dappolonia, with support of Total and Febelfin. The key note speaker will be ir. K. De Boeck, CEO Dexia Holding, about uncertainty in the financial and banking industry. A registration form will be available after the summer holidays. Inter-university platform "Uncertainty in Engineering" 2012 to Present Members:Didier De Buyst, Jozef Van Dyck In an important industrial claim I encountered a practical engineering problem facing uncertainty. It became clear that (i) there is a lack of co-operation between Belgian universities, (ii) research landscape is fairly scattered, and (iii) no or at least little integration and consolidation in practical engineering application. Everyone seems to be working on his/her own island. This is the reason why I created an informal platform for exchange of experience, know-how and knowledge. A workshop was held on August 21st, A questionnaire was send in the fall of 2012 to all Belgian universities active in the field of uncertainty in engineering. From the response one can conclude that there is a clear desire to: 1) improve contacts between academia and industry; 2) foster cooperation/communication between academia. Within the received response, the propagation of "regular" uncertainty in "physical" models (analytical or numerical) in order to "optimize" design is most frequently researched (or takes most of the research effort). A more exact inventory of the techniques and tools that have been used or developed should be of interest. The remainder of the research (which is still a substantial part) is dispersed over many different topics. Even within the limited response the pooled research/knowledge base appears very broad. Teaming should allow to develop innovative solutions for many different practical problems. Further thought shall be given on practical steps one might take to achieve the two aforementioned objectives. The SCK.CEN will act as the permanent secretary of this initiative. Once a year we will host a seminar and provide the necessary support for the logistics, and if possible also some content. It is however up to the universities to make proposals for workshops or seminars. This is initiative is evidently open to all Belgian universities and other academic institutes involved in engineering sciences. Case Belgacom & Telindus: a One Way Love Affair? Nieuwsgierigen moeten echter nog een beetje geduld uitoefenen. Behalve een selecte groep genodigden, welke verwacht worden op de eerste editie als try-out die binnenkort plaatsvindt. Bij succes zal het initiatief voor het grote publiek gelanceerd worden. Een groep oud-studenten en docenten van de opleiding Architectuur aan de Universiteit Hasselt hebben hun schouders gezet onder het project architecten(huis)kamer. Zij hopen drie tot vier keer per jaar een avond te organiseren waar (afstuderende) studenten, docenten, architecten en andere geïnteresseerden op een informele en spontane manier contacten kunnen leggen, ervaringen kunnen delen, debatteren en discussiëren. Kortom, een avond waarop bruggen worden gebouwd tussen alle spelers binnen het ruime architectuurveld.
